Abstract

The oral cavity is one part of the body that is important to keep healthy; dental plaque which is an aggregation of bacteria, espe-cially those caused by Staphylococcus aureus, can cause various oral diseases. The brown alga Eisenia bicyclis has potential as an antibacterial agent due to the content of bioactive compounds such as phlorotannin, fucosterol, and fucoidan that have an-tibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities. This article examines the antibacterial effect of E.bicyclis against S. au-reus in the context of oral health. The study showed that E.bicyclis extract inhibited the growth of S.aureus by the mechanism of increasing cell membrane permeability and inhibiting biofilm formation. In addition, phlorotannin compounds from E.bicyclis also showed synergistic effects in enhancing antimicrobial activity. It is concluded that E.bicyclis has the potential to be developed as a natural antibacterial therapy in oral health, especially to control the growth and plaque formation caused by S.aureus.

Abstract

Chitosan as a natural derivative of chitin, shows great potential as a biomaterial in dentistry thanks to its biocompatibility, biode-gradability, and antimicrobial activity. Data shows chitosan is effective at enhancing the healing process, reducing pain, and in-hibiting the growth of pathogenic micro organisms. Recent studies have also shown that chitosan, especially those produced from the shells of marine animals such as shrimps and crabs, have wide applications in orthodontic, endodontic, periodontic, and implantological treatments. The use of chitosan as a natural material in dentistry offers a safe and environmentally friendly alterna-tive to synthetic materials, making it an attractive option for future dental technology development.

Abstract

Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem in children under five years old, characterised by shorter height than their peers. Pregnant women are one of the groups that are vulnerable to oral and dental diseases, such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and caries. This stu-dy discusses diet and experience of oral health during pregnancy with the incidence of stunting at RSUD dr. Rasidin Padang; des-criptive research using quantitative data with a cross sectional research design using total sampling of questionnaires on 10 preg-nant women respondents. The results were the average age of respondents was 32 years and generally did not work. While in education the most respondents are elementary and high school education as many as 4 people. From the questionnaire it is known that respondents have a bad diet, while the experience of the respondent's oral health is moderate. It is concluded that maternal lifestyle also affects the nutritional status of toddlers so that it will also affect the growth and development of toddler teeth.

Abstract

Stunting and dental caries are two major health problems affecting children in Indonesia. This study investigated the association between stunting and dental caries risk in Indonesian children. Data were sourced from Google Schoolar, Pubmed and Science Direct. Demographic data and sample characteristics showed that stunted children come from diverse socioeconomic back-grounds, with the prevalence of stunting varying across regions. The prevalence of dental caries was also high among stunted children. The results of this study have important implications for public health policy development in Indonesia, namely the need for a holistic approach to the prevention of stunting and dental caries, including increased nutrition, dental health, and oral hygiene counseling. It was concluded that these programs could improve the overall quality of life of Indonesian children.

Abstract

Efforts to improve oral health can include efforts to increase knowledge, including promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilita-tive efforts aimed at everyone. However, children with hearing loss require different media to educate them. This article examines the types of communication media in improving oral hygiene of children with hearing loss. The design used was a scoping re-view using Pubmed, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases using the keywords media, communication, oral hygiene, hearing loss and children and entering boolean AND and OR in the database search. The results of the research of all articles, the most widely used media is video (52%), followed by pictures (24%), sign language (12%) and the least is comics (6%) and dental models (6%). It is concluded that a variety of media can be used in improving OH of children with hearing loss, and re-quires children's attention and retention. The instructions delivered by the educator must be in accordance with the child's cog-nitive abilities.

Abstract

Dental caries is a condition that attacks the hard tissues of the teeth which is influenced by various factors, including host, agent (food), and environment. This study assessed the oral health status of primary school students attending SD Klangon, in Sedayu, Bantul, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the convenience sampling method to collect a sam-ple of grade IV and V students. After obtaining written parental consent, nine children agreed to participate in the oral clinical eva-luation. The def-t index was used to assess the oral health status of each student. The results of this study revealed a caries pre-valence of 100% among the subjects, and none of them were caries-free. Males had a mean def-t of 3.1, while females had 1. Children under 12 years old had a mean def-t score of 3.89, which was greater than that of children older than 12 years (0.22). The calculation results showed a total value of (d) (e) (f)-t of 36 resulting in a def-t index value of 4. It was concluded that the in-dex value fell into the moderate category, the average child examined at SD Klangon had 4 teeth affected by caries.

Abstract

Facial profile characteristics are associated with the morphology of a person's palate so that several categories of palate depth are obtained, but research and information regarding the relationship between palate depth and facial profile is still very little so it is deemed necessary to conduct research on this matter. This study discusses the relationship between palate depth and fa-cial profile analysis using subjects who are preclinical students of the Faculty of Dentistry Unhas. This type of research is analytic descriptive observational with cross-sectional design by simple stratified random sampling. The subjects were examined using in-traoral and extraoral radiographs. The characteristics of the palate were shallow (2.41%), medium (16.87%), and deep (80.72%). While according to the type of facial profile; concave 2.41%, straight 18.07%, and convex (79.52%). Pearson chi-square corre-lation statistical test obtained p>0.05. It was concluded that deep palate and convex facial profile type dominated the categories studied, and there was no relationship between palate depth and facial profile analysis.

Abstract

Palatine rugae can be used as an alternative source of forensic information to identify a person because none of the rugae pat-terns are the same even in twins. The study was conducted to determine the comparison of the shape and size of palatine rugae based on gender in dental students batch of 2022 and 2023 Baiturrahmah University. With a cross-sectional design, a popula-tion of 67 samples was obtained with random sampling technique. Univariate analysis is presented in the form of frequency dis-tribution and percentage, bivariate analysis using chi-square test, and data processing using computerised SPSS program IBM version 25.0. Of the 6 forms of palatine rugae based on the Thomas and Kotze classification, it was found that in the male gender the most was straight, namely 17 people (50%), and in women the most was wavy, 14 people (42.4%). Of the 3 sizes of pala-tine rugae based on the Thomas and Kotze classification, the most males were 3-5 mm, namely 15 people (44.1%), and the most females were >5 mm, namely 29 people (87.9%). It is concluded that there are differences in the shape and size of the palatine rugae based on gender in dental students of batch 2022 and batch 2023 of Baiturrahmah University.

Abstract

Investigating the role of oral myofunctional therapy for the treatment of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). A literature search was conducted to find randomised controlled trials conducted in humans. Oral myofunctional therapy was found to be effective for the treatment of TMD, both as a single therapy and in combination with other treatments. It was concluded that although the scientific evidence is still weak, oral myofunctional therapy appears to be effective for the treatment of TMD with a favourable cost-benefit and risk-benefit ratio.
