Abstract

This research aims to describe the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text and to find out the causes of students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text. This research uses quantitative descriptive methods. The research subjects are X MIPA 6 students of SMAN 1 Sukodadi who had difficulties when writing descriptive text, the data of this research are the result of students’ worksheet and the students’ answer in interview. This research used documentation and interview to collect the data. Data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion was used to analyze the data. The result of this research shows that the students of X MIPA 6 have difficulty in writing descriptive text, the difficulties are difficulties in generic structure, difficulties in grammar, and difficulties in spelling. While the factors that cause the students’ difficulties in writing descriptive text are lack of proficiency in the text production skills, lack of knowledge relating to the subject contents of the script to be written, and lack of interest in learning English.

Abstract

The main purpose of this research is to know the improvement of students’ reading skill in narrative text through story mapping strategy. this research was conducted at SMP An- Nur Watukosek-Pasuruan. this research is a classroom action research which is conducted in two cycles. this study was carried out on February to April 2021. the subjects were the eight grade students of SMP An-Nur Watukosek, Pasuruan. The data collection involved a number of instruments, namely preliminary test to know the reading ability firstly. Then, using post-test in the end of each cycle, questionnaires, and also an interview. The post-test used in each cycle to know the reading’s improvement after using story mapping strategy. The questionnaire in the form administrated to collect data about the students’ appreciation in learning reading using story mapping, both the teacher’s method, the students, and also story mapping itself. There were several steps in this research implementation, they are identifying the problems, planning, acting, observing and reflecting.the result showed that the students’ reading ability improved and the target of this research was achieved. And also they felt  easier to understand the text, because it consist of some elements, are orientation, complication, and resolution.. Keywords: Story mapping, reading skill

Abstract

Based on Korean Film Data, Extreme Job is a Korean action comedy film has become the second best-seller Korean film which is directed by Lee Byung Hun. Not only is the comedian's story interesting, this film also contains solidarity value. The problem in this study is how the representation of solidarity value through Extreme Job film by Lee Byung Hun? To elaborate the problem in depth, this study uses the method of semiotic analysis by Roland Barthes. The aim is to analyse the representation of solidarity value in Extreme Job film. Barthes's semiotic analysis, namely denotative and connotative. Denotation is the first step in system of signification. It explained shortly, densely, and clearly. Connotation is the second step in system of signification. It explained more extensively than denotation because connotation is liberal. On the significance of the first step is cohesion showed by the existence of togetherness on doing something, the persuasion is the result of their solidarity also as a reason in order to buy the chicken restaurant through altruism, and division police's jobs for investigating narcotic consumers to various places where destinated by delivers of chicken with narcotic. On the significance of the second step is cohesion as a solidarity indicated based on main purpose of police, recklessness of altruism that showed solidarity among job partners for make success their mission to chasing the group of narcotic fugitives, and job division sign that showed solidarity among job partners for arresting the group of narcotic fugitives.

Abstract

This research aimed to know the students interest in learning English and to know the interest of male and females students in learning English. The type of this research was qualitative approaches. The subject of this study were the eleventh grade students of social 2 at SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi Lamongan. Total students are 32 students. The techniques of collecting data are interview and questionnaire. The primary instruments of this research is interview instrument. In addition by using questionnaire sheet. The technique for analyzing Data collection techniques carried out in two ways, namely: interview and questionnaire. Data analysis technique using descriptive analysis, the researcher explains one by one of the two ways that can be done in data collection. The results of this study indicate that students have low interest in learning English, it also supported by the results of the questionnaire. Based on the results of the English teacher and students interviews also the questionnaire that showed students’ interest in learning English were very low, the feeling of pleasure and interest of students in learning English as well as too monotonous learning method became the main factors that cause students’ interest in learning English. Keywords: Learning interest, English lesson

Abstract

Reading is one of the four language skills taught in the English language learning process besides listening, speaking, and writing. This research aims to know the students’ difficulties in reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi and to know the factors of students’ difficulties in reading comprehension at SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi. This research is descriptive qualitative research. The research was conducted in march 2020. The subject of research was the tenth-grade MIPA 5 of SMA Negeri 1 Sukodadi who were detected that they had difficulties in reading comprehension. The techniques for collecting the data were interviews and documents. the researcher collected the data such as students’ worksheet. The second was data reduction. The researcher classified and reduced the data based on focus. The researcher deleted several data that did not relate to the difficulties in reading comprehension. The third was the data display, the researcher arranged the information to conclude. The researcher presented the data from the difficulties in reading comprehension, and the last is the conclusion. The result of the research showed that some students had difficulties in reading comprehension and they had difficulty in different levels, namely literal comprehension, inferential comprehension, critical comprehension, and creative comprehension. The most difficulties experienced by students were at the level of creative comprehension. The factor of the students’ difficulties in comprehension at tenth grade, there was an inadequate instruction presented by the teacher, lack of pupils’ interest, and the vocabulary difficulties.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the communicative functions and the meaning of Slogans in Public Service Advertisements (PSA). This is a descriptive-qualitative research. The data derived from 20 PSA videos downloaded from Youtube. Then, they are collected through document analysis and analyzed with content analysis. There are only four types of meaning stated by Leech (1985) e.i 12 slogans with conceptual meanings, 7 slogans with connotative meanings, 7 slogans with affective meanings and 1 slogan with social meanings.  Based on the Illocutionary acts, some communicative functions found in PSA slogans are 1) to invite society to do something, 2) to inform people, 3) to report or to state something important, 4) to express emotion, and 5) to convince people doing something in the future.   Keywords: PSA slogans, communicative functions, language meaning, illocutionary act, speech act

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the roles of songs in teaching listening at Senior High School. Teachers can use some media that are suitable with the condition of the class and students. For that reason, song is one of media that is familiar for students. Descriptive qualitative was the approach of this research. The data were derived from interview, observation and documentation. The interview were conducted by 7 participants consisting of 6 students and 1 teacher. The subject of this research was the twelve grade students of one of Senior High School in Surabaya. This study found 3 roles and 5 benefits of songs in teaching listening at Senior High School. The result of roles are 1) song is a cozy medium to teach listening. 2) song is used to entertain students in listening class. 3) song is used to motivate students to learn English in the classroom. Besides, the result of benefits are 1) the students can learn vocabulary and meaning. 2) the students can learn pronunciation. 3) the students can train their listening skill. 4) the students can enjoy the listening class. 5) the students became active and confident in the class. In conclusion, songs became one of  good media in teaching listening because the students can feel comfortable, happy, and do not feel bored when they are in listening session. To all intens and purposes, there is a need to be conducted with having many participants for further research both different school or level. This is to get rich of the data in order to have more concrete data.  Keywords: Roles of song,  listening media

Abstract

The study is mainly the use of code mixing between Thai and English language in social media (Facebook) by Thai users. Code mixing is mixing two or more language and only the changing some of elements such as word and phrase in a sentence and usually happens in informal situation and mixing two language or more languages in one situation. The researcher wants to analyze the use of code mixing by Thai users on Facebook because the researcher wants to know the forms and function of using code mixing by Thai users. The techniques of collecting the data used in this research are observation and documentation. The researcher used qualitative observation because the researcher needs to observe the behaviors of using language especially in the use code mixing on Facebook. The documentation is saving and documenting the data which are taken from the observation. The objects of this study are Thai users’ account. The result of this study shows 1) the forms of code mixing 2) the function of code mixing used on Facebook by Thai users. The conclusions of this study are the researcher found six forms of code mixing used by Thai users on Facebook. There are words insertion, phrase insertion, hybrid, repetition, idiom and clause. The researcher found seven function of using code mixing.  That is,  a) to make the caption or status cool or intellect looking, b) to update new English vocabularies to their friends, c) to make the discussion or chatting interesting d) to get a good relation, e) to share information, f) to promote a product to customer, g) to give a proud feeling. Finally, the researcher hopes that this research can be useful to readers and follow up by other researchers because this research is still far from perfect and there are some other aspects that can still be studied in this research. Keywords: : Sociolinguistics, bilingualism, code mixing

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study uses novel Kisah Tragis Oei Hui Lan Putri Orang Terkaya di Indonesia as material object and theory of representation and orientalism initiated by Edward Said become object formal. The study tries to answer research problem namely how the form of limitations and dependence shown by the character of Chinese descent as a representation of Eastern Society of the West. The results shows that every character as representatives of Eastern society had shown dependence on the West. Oei Tiong Ham, Oei Hui Lan’s Father need the help of Dutch officials and government to run his business. Wellington Koo, Oei Hui Lan's husband depends a lot on the West in politic. It is because there are some opinions that west has tremendous power and advance in technology, military, science that still deeply rooted in Eastern societies today and difficult to avoid so creates dependence which is definition of limited condition.Key Words: East-West, Novel, Orientalism, RepresentationABSTRAKPenelitian ini menggunakan novel Kisah Tragis Oei Hui Lan Putri Orang Terkaya di Indonesia sebagai objek materil, serta teori representasi dan orientalisme yang digagas oleh Edward Said menjadi objek formal. Penelitian berusaha menjawab rumusan masalah yakni bagaimana bentuk keterbatasan serta ketergantungan yang ditunjukkan para tokoh keturunan Tionghoa sebagai representasi Masyarakat Timur pada dunia Barat dalam novel ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa para tokoh sebagai representasi masyarakat Timur telah menunjukkan ketergantungan pada dunia Barat. Oei Tiong Ham, Ayah dari Oei Hui Lan membutuhkan bantuan pejabat dan pemerintah Belanda untuk melancarkan bisnisnya. Wellington Koo, suami Oei Hui Lan banyak bergantung pada Barat dalam hal politik. Hal ini disebabkan oleh adanya pandangan bahwa Barat memiliki kekuatan yang luar biasa karena kemajuannya pada bidang teknologi, militer, ilmu pengetahuan yang masih mengakar kuat dalam pikiran masyarakat Timur bahkan hingga saat ini dan sulit dihindari sehingga menimbulkan ketergantungan yang tidak lain merupakan definisi dari keadaan terbatas. Abstract

In any practical field, tensions always exist between the group that views theoretical study as necessary and those who consider it pointless: likewise in the case of translation. Translation often places most of its emphasis on its practical aspects. The theoretical aspect of translation is often marginalized in professional settings. Nevertheless, in the context of translator training, translation theory is as an essential area, which needs to be studied and explored. This study investigated the views of 5th- and 7th-semester students of English Department at a private undergraduate educational institution in Jakarta, Indonesia, on translation theory. The class Theory of Translation is the only official locus for instruction in theories of translation at the target institution. The results of this study may provide several benefits, including the aiding the creation of syllabuses for and teaching translation theory. The author used a questionnaire to acquire the data needed to address the research questions. The results of this research revealed that most students in the 5th and 7th semester of English study in Jakarta, Indonesia, have a positive perception of translation theory, believing that it is essential for translation practice. Moreover, they also considered that translation theory could provide solutions for issues in the practice of translation.
