Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine whether or not seventh graders at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol can improve their descriptive writing skills by using online memes.  In this quantitative study, the researcher used a quasi-experimental strategy.  The results showed that the experimental group averaged 79.00 points whereas the control group averaged 70.81. In addition, the findings (Sig 2-tailed) demonstrated a 0.000 significant value. The significance level (0.000 < 0.05) is lower than the significant value (Sig 2-tailed). We may conclude that the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is correct and reject the Null Hypothesis (H0) based on the findings of the significance value (Sig 2-tailed). The results show that seventh graders at SMPN 1 Sumbergempol benefit significantly from using Internet memes to improve their descriptive writing skills.  It can be concluded that internet Memes enable the students getting the ideas and lead them to the objects being described. Through the application of this media, students can easily create descriptive text based on images.

Abstract

Kulut kaet, or mourning lament, is an important tradition in the Dawan ethnic community in South Central Timor District, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), which carries deep religious significance. It is more than just an expression of grief over loss, but also a means of honoring the spirit of the deceased and maintaining the connection between the living world and the spiritual world. This article aims to explore the religious significance of the Kulut kaet emphasizing the spiritual dimension of the mourning ritual. Through a qualitative and ethnographic approach, this study analyses how Kulut kaet functions as a form of respect for the spirits of the deceased, as a way of maintaining relationships with ancestors, as well as a collective healing mechanism for the Dawan community. The results show that Kulut kaet is not only an expression of personal grief, but also a ritual that involves the community in the process of grieving together. This lament becomes important in strengthening social solidarity, preserving traditions, and carrying out religious obligations as a tribute to the spirits of the deceased.

Abstract

This study examines the use of hyperbole (夸张) in online shopping advertisements on the Taobao platform, with particular attention to how these expressions construct and represent the shift in Chinese beauty standards from the traditional ideal of 白瘦幼 (white, thin, youthful) to the emerging aesthetic trend 国潮美 (Chinese national-style beauty). Using a qualitative approach supported by multimodal discourse analysis of 40 Taobao advertisements (2020–2024), this study identifies key patterns in linguistic hyperbole, visual design, and embedded cultural meanings. The findings show that hyperbole in 白瘦幼-themed advertisements predominantly amplifies extreme and unrealistic beauty ideals. Meanwhile, hyperbole in 国潮美 themed advertisements emphasizes natural beauty, cultural symbolism, and national pride through expressions such as so stunning it leaves people breathless or instant oriental charm. These forms celebrate diversity and promote culturally rooted aesthetic values. Overall, the study demonstrates that hyperbole in Taobao advertisements serves not only as a persuasive rhetorical device but also as a cultural marker that reflects shifting beauty ideologies and growing cultural confidence in modern Chinese society. The research contributes to the fields of digital media linguistics, Chinese popular culture, and rhetorical strategies in online marketing

Abstract

This study examines the challenges faced by eighth-grade students at SMP Ma’arif Miftahul Ulum Melirang in comprehending English narrative texts, a crucial component of reading comprehension. The research addresses two main questions: what specific difficulties students face, and what factors contribute to these challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the study involved 23 students through tests and questionnaires. The tests consisted of multiple-choice, short-answer, and true/false questions, while the questionnaire gathered students’ perceptions of their reading difficulties. The findings reveal that students struggle with four key aspects of reading comprehension: identifying main ideas, understanding vocabulary, making inferences, and recognizing detailed information. The most significant challenge was answering short-answer questions, which indicated a gap in understanding detailed content and vocabulary. Additionally, the study identified three primary factors contributing to these difficulties: the students’ backgrounds, including low motivation and fear of English; teaching techniques that were not well-aligned with students’ needs; and unsupportive learning environments. These findings highlight the need for improved teaching strategies and supportive environments to enhance students’ reading comprehension skills.

Abstract

Recent advances in immersive learning technologies have opened new pathways for innovation in English Language Teaching (ELT). Despite this progress, scholarly discussion on the application of Virtual Reality (VR) for inclusion students within Indonesia’s Merdeka Curriculum remains limited. This study conceptually examines the integration of Millealab, an Indonesian-developed VR platform, into inclusive ELT as a means of supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which emphasizes equitable and quality education for all. The proposed conceptual framework demonstrates how Millealab supports differentiated instruction, enhances learner engagement, and facilitates the design of Individualized Learning Programs (ILPs) aligned with inclusive education principles. By situating Millealab within interconnected pedagogical and technological dimensions, this study contributes to broader discussions on adaptive, accessible, and equitable VR-based instructional design. While challenges related to teacher preparedness and resource availability persist, the findings suggest that Millealab holds strong potential as a transformative model for inclusive ELT. Future empirical research is recommended to validate the framework and examine its long-term educational impact.

Abstract

Speaking remains one of the most challenging skills for Indonesian students to master, largely due to limited opportunities for oral practice in traditional, teacher-centered classrooms. To address this issue, this study investigates the use of the Flipped Classroom model in improving students’ English-speaking competence at MA Darul Ulum Waru, Sidoarjo. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research was conducted over one month (April–May 2025) and involved one English teacher and fifteen eleventh-grade students. Data were collected through classroom observations, structured interviews, and documentation to explore both instructional implementation and participants’ experiences. The findings reveal that the Flipped Classroom encouraged students to prepare independently before class, resulting in more interactive in-class speaking activities. Students demonstrated greater confidence, motivation, and fluency, while the teacher reported higher engagement and participation levels. Despite challenges related to digital access and self-regulation, the approach proved effective in promoting speaking competence. This study suggests that English teachers integrate digital pre-class learning into speaking instruction and that policymakers support technology-based pedagogical innovation to foster more communicative, student-centered classrooms in Indonesian schools.

Abstract

As educational practices increasingly rely on technology, teacher education programs are under pressure to integrate digital tools, especially for Indonesian pre-service EFL teachers. Despite this growing emphasis, comprehensive studies addressing how these prospective teachers interpret and evaluate the use of digital applications for instructional media design are still scarce. Accordingly, the present study was designed to explore these perceptions through an analysis of attitudes, instructional implementation, and fundamental belief systems. This research adopted a survey-based quantitative design involving 44 sixth-semester students who had completed micro-teaching as part of their academic requirements. Conducted in December 2024 at the English Education Study Program of UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, the study collected data through a Google Forms instrument with 23 items organized into three thematic dimensions. Analysis of the responses produced an overall mean of 4.1, suggesting very favorable perceptions toward educational applications, notably for their contribution to active student participation, interactive learning processes, and effective teacher–student interaction. The study suggests that continuous professional training is necessary to equip future educators with the competencies required for effective integration of digital tools. These findings support the inclusion of structured digital literacy components in teacher education curricula.
