Abstract

This scientific article explores the use of virtual reality (VR) technology in improving students' writing skills, specifically descriptive text writing at MTsN 1 Batu. The study aims to determine the effectiveness of VR technology in enhancing students' writing skills and to identify the challenges encountered in using VR technology in the classroom. The research methodology employed in this study is a quasi-experimental design, with a pre-test and post-test control group. The participants are 60 students from MTsN 1 Batu, divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group received VR-based writing instruction, while the control group received traditional writing instruction. The data collected from pre-tests and post-tests were analyzed using t-test. The findings indicate that the use of VR technology in teaching descriptive text writing significantly improved students' writing skills. Furthermore, the experimental group outperformed the control group in terms of the quality of their descriptive text. The study also reveals several challenges in using VR technology in the classroom, such as technical problems, time constraints, and students' unfamiliarity with VR technology. These challenges can be overcome through proper planning, training, and technical support. In conclusion, this study suggests that the use of VR technology can be an effective tool for improving students' writing skills, particularly in descriptive text writing. However, it requires careful planning and implementation to overcome the challenges encountered in using VR technology in the classroom. The study's implications are significant for educators, as it highlights the potential of VR technology in enhancing students' learning experience.

Abstract

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) provides guidelines for Arabic language teaching aids and curriculum development in language courses. The research investigated pre-service Arabic teachers' perceptions of CEFR in the context of the Mambaus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School. A total of 200 fourth- and fifth-year preservice Arabic teachers participated in the study. A mixed method design was used to collect data through a seven-point Likert scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative findings revealed that the participants had a high level of understanding of the CEFR, particularly in the domain of assessment and the development of reference level descriptions. In contrast, qualitative data revealed that Mambaus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School preservice teachers had little knowledge of the CEFR, and their understanding of the CEFR was very limited. However, the pre-service teacher of the Mambaus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School expressed a positive view regarding the application of CEFR into classroom practice. Overall, these findings suggest that pre-service Arabic teachers have a poor understanding of the conception of the CEFR, suggesting that stakeholders of the Mambaus Sholihin Islamic Boarding School should raise awareness regarding the proper implementation of the CEFR and its alignment with the national curriculum

Abstract

The advent of technological innovation systems has raised concerns about the quality of education. This paper aims to examine and critique the prevalence of lazy thinking and writing among students who rely on online tools during their academic pursuits. It argues that the use of artificial writing software by students not only undermines their intellectual capabilities but also poses a threat to the overall standard of education. Consequently, the emergence of various virtual tools, including ChatGBT, jenni.ai, Calmly writer, living writer, Hubspot’s Blog Topic Generator, The CoSchedule headline analyzer app, Portent’s Idea Generator, Scrivener, and Hemingway Editor, has become prevalent among students in their educational journey. Acknowledging that technology's progress cannot be halted, it becomes crucial to ensure that such advancements does not replace the essence of creative thinking and writing within academic environments. This conceptual study, employing a qualitative and quantitative approach, explores this concern. The research gathers insights from students at the University of Limpopo on the matter in question. The findings indicate that a significant number of students resort to online software due to laziness, shortsightedness, and a lack of creativity when completing academic assessments. Despite the university's implementation of Turnitin, students still manage to bypass the system using these online tools. Consequently, the study highlights the susceptibility of the quality of education to the influence of online writing software. This paper recommends two key alternatives: firstly, the adoption of Activated Classroom Teaching and secondly, the encouragement of ‘Socratic Method’ of teaching and learning to encourage active and radical thinking amongst students and improve the quality of education.
