International Journal of Linguistics and Discourse Analytics (IJOLIDA) is a peer-reviewed academic journal of linguistics and discourse analytics published by Denpasar Institute. The journal publishes both articles and book reviews. It publishes two special issues a year. IJOLIDA encourages submissions that incorporate theories and methodologies from all traditions of linguistics and discourse analytics to explore any aspect of language and discourse. Abstract

One of the phenomena of social crisis that occurs in society is marked by a trance. Unfortunately, this incident is often associated with mystical aspects. In fact, trance can be explained scientifically and it can be cured through therapeutic communication with religious nuances. This paper attempts to show that the stages of therapeutic communication and speech representation that is performed by Ustadz Danu in the healing process of a possessed person. The main purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the stages of therapeutic communication and speech representation. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach taking a primary and secondary data sources by observing, documenting, and analysing. The result of this study indicate that: first, there are four stages religious therapeutic communication that can improve the mental peace of trance patients by counsellor through religious activities such as reading salawat, prayers, and dhikr. Second, after getting religious guidance, patients with mental disorders feel more inner peace than before, this can be seen from the patient's independence, and the way of communication of patients who began to gradually improve. Third, utterances of advice that show supporting factors in healing a possessed patient include adequate facilities, infrastructure, and family support

Abstract

Parents are the first and foremost educators in the process of child development by positioning the house into a multipurpose building full of meaning. This study aims to explore the discourse of informal education in building children's character during the coronavirus disease-19 (covid-19) pandemic. This study is descriptive-qualitative. Data collection was carried out by studying documents and literature. The results of the study showed that the emergence of Covid-19 was initially responded to normally like other viruses, but the increasing number of victims eventually caused panic which affected the socio-cultural community, Covid-19 forces people to work and stay at home more. Social interaction, face-to-face communication and being replaced online by taking advantage of the sophistication of technology, and the role of parents is important by placing the family as one of the pillars of education to instill the norms, morals, and rules of conduct in consistently carrying out the government programs to prevent and break the chain of covid-19 transmission

Abstract

This research analyzed the methods applied in translating English short story “The Masque of the Red Death” into Indonesian by two Indonesian translators; Anton Kurnia and Shinta Dewi. In the action of pointing out the methods, the theory of translation method proposed by Newmark was the foundation of the study. The translation methods emphasize the source language and target language. Since translation is both a means of a process and a product, this study also analyzed the readability level of the two translation results. In order to assess the readability, this research involved 7 respondents. Every respondent filled in the questionnaire given related to the product of the short story with open-ended questions. Readability was measured using the theory of Readability stated by Nababan. The outcome gained from this research was different translation methods applied by the two Indonesian translators had affected the readability level as well as the sense of the short story by the target readers. According to the findings, the translation methods used by Anton Kurnia was dominated by free translation method. In contrast to Anton Kurnia, Shinta Dewi frequently adopted literal translation method. Although the distinction of readability level was not very significant between the two, the method which emphasized the target language culture indicated a higher level of readability than the method which emphasized the source language culture.Culture

Abstract

This study aims to answer problems that occurred as the implication of the application of strategies in translation. The first began with finding out types of translation strategies in journalistic articles. It is then followed by the analysis of how the faithfulness of the source language text was retained in the target language text. The last would be finding out the types of textual manipulation in the target language text. The object in this study is the National Geographic magazine April 2020 issue, both the English and Indonesian versions. A series of qualitative methods were employed in this study, with the library research technique used in collecting the data. This study also employed the referential method in analyzing the data and formal and informal methods in presenting the analyzed data. The result revealed that Chesterman’s translation strategies which were found in the magazine are syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic strategies. As in the case of the faithfulness of TL towards its SL in the National Geographic Indonesia April 2020 issue, it was found that the faithfulness was retained through the application of Chesterman’s syntactic strategies, as well as textual manipulation through the use of the syntactic strategies

Abstract

Writing is one of the important language skills to communicate in written forms. Therefore, the improvement of writing skills is absolutely essential to be continually carried out. This study aims at developing writing skills by implementing a mind mapping strategy in the EFL classroom. There two cyclic learning sessions comprising planning, action, observation, and reflection were conducted in this study. The data were collected through administering pre-test, post-test, and questionnaires to the students who participated in this study. Based on the results of data analysis, this study revealed that students’ writing skills could be improved through implementing a mind mapping strategy. Therefore, this study implies that teachers should consider using mind mapping in teaching writing

Abstract

This study aims to: (i) analyze the types of relative clauses and its constituent structure found in the novel entitled “Creatures Behind Houses”, (ii) analyze the types of translation shifts of relative clause in the translation process from source language into target language. This research study focuses on English relative clauses and its translations into Indonesian found in the story entitled “Creatures Behind Houses”. The research applied the theory of relative clauses which was proposed by Quirk (1985), Sneddon (1996) and the theory of translation shift which was proposed by Catford (1965). The process of collecting data is started by reading the entire data source in order to understand the story and observe the possibility of the data source which could be taken from the story “Creatures Behind Houses”. The data source was read to find out the types of English relative clauses which were found in the story in the method and technique of collecting the data. The research study found that one type of English relative clauses was found in the story entitled “Creatures Behind Houses”. It was the type of Restrictive relative clause found in the novel entitled “Creatures Behind Houses”. Based on the results of analysis, it can be seen that there are four types of English relative clauses found in the data sources with restrictive relative clause as subject and there is 1 type of restrictive relative clause as object found in the “Creatures Behind Houses”. Secondly, there are two types of translation shifts which were found in the novel. Those are 5 data that were translated in unit shifts and 1 data that was translated by using structure shifts

Abstract

The objective of the study is to investigate the sound simplification of speech output in Broca's aphasics and describe the effect of the alteration within phonological features from the perspective of Sonority Sequencing Principle (SSP). The speech output of two patients was exposed using phonological tasks and recorded with a Sonny voice recorder. The effect of features in substitution sonority was measured with the Wilcoxon's test and acoustic features were analyzed with Praat. The results of the study revealed that the consonant substitution and omission errors in Broca’s aphasia occur in the initial position due to the lesion in the anterior part of the left brain and that the less marked features that are statistically substituted by marked features are not significantly affected by marked features that are substituted by less marked features. The substitution was dominantly influenced by neighboring segments and the sonority violance occured againts the sonority scale

Abstract

This study aimed to: (i) identify the types of noun phrase and its constituent structure found in the story entitled “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”, (ii) analyze the types of translation shifts of noun phrase in the translation process from English into Indonesian. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a modern fairy tale with a distinctly American setting. It has fantasy characters, and data of noun phrases including their translations were found in the novel. In analyzing the translations of noun phrases from English into Indonesian, this study applied shift translation. This study used the theory of translation shift. Translation shifts are the changes occured when there is text translated into another language due to difference between source language and target language. Translation shift theory was proposed by Catford (1978) and the theory of tree diagram that was proposed by Quirk et al. (1985). Qualitative method was applied by the researcher to analyze the data. This study focused on the analysis of noun phrases including tree diagram and its translation. The researcher found that Shifts in translation occurred in the English noun phrases that are also translated into noun phrases in Indonesian as the target language. The study found that unit shift and structure were the translation method used in the translation process from English into Indonesian

Abstract

The writer of literacy works, in conveying massages to his/her audiences as the result of contemplation may manipulate “style” by style here – which comes from English word – is meant the way of the writer to choose languages in conveying massages to the readers or audiences. Style is marked by the formal language forms, such as: the choice of correct dictions, sentence structure, figurative languages, the use of coherence, etc. So style is the appropriate use of language form in certain context, by certain writer, and certain purposes, etc. The final goal of manipulating style is to give exceedingly real satisfaction to the readers or audiences. And this language style should be taught and practiced to the students in the classroom in order that the students may have understanding of the use of diffrent style of languages other than that normally used in formal style

Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the grammatical cohesion reference of Jack Ma speech text “Believe in your dreams”. The study used descriptive qualitative method. This study aimed to figure out the types of reference in the speech text and to give an explanation of the reference used in the speech. The source of data in this study is Jack Ma speech text “Believe in your dreams”. The technique of collection data in this study used documentary. The technique of analysis data in this study is related to the theory, concepts, and methods of cohesion theory. This study used Cohesion in English by Halliday and Hasan. The finding in this study showed that there are two types of reference found in Jack Ma speech text “Believe in your dream”. In this speech text there are 36 utterances consist of 30 personal references and 6 demonstrative references. From the finding it was concluded that the most dominant type is personal reference in the speech text "Believe in your dreams" by Jack Ma. The type of personal reference in this study is spoken by the speaker (Jack Ma) who refers to himself and also the listeners/readers
