Abstract

This study aims to investigate teachers’ views about the implementation of collaborative learning in English classes. Collaborative learning helps students to improve their English language performance. The data was collected through observation, questionnaires, and interview. The quantitative data were analyzed using percentage and frequency. Theme analysis technique was used to analyze the qualitative data. The result of the study indicated that most EFL teachers widely implement students’ collaborative learning, but the type of collaborative learning they are implementing is not collaborative group learning. Most of the teachers simply make their students to sit side by side to talk with each other as they do their individual assignments, and some teachers assign a task to groups.  Then, one or two of the group members do the work and the other group members get equal credit. Although each of these is important in collaborative learning, they do not qualify collaborative learning rather traditional group learning. The data obtained from teachers’ interview revealed that teachers widely implement both informal and base group collaborative learning since most of the teachers allow their students to work collaborative from few minutes to a class period and most of the groups (‘Net works’) formed are with stable membership for the semester. In addition to this, some teachers were not playing their roles as they are expected. Teachers and other concerned bodies ought to deliver sorts of orientations to the students about the importance of collaborative learning to maximize their views before implementing collaborative learning.

This case study was conducted through interviews with five informants, non-participant observation, and document study. The collected data were analyzed using inductive analysis. The results showed that the vocational high school community service programs serve as innovative community empowerment programs. This case study found that the participation of vocational schools (SMK) in community service activities catalyzes the fostering of more robust connections between educational institutions and their local communities. Forms of SMK participation in community service activities cover ten expertise skills which serve as the foundation for the school's community empowerment initiatives, where community members are engaged and empowered through various programs and activities. The alignment of expertise competencies with community needs is crucial to ensure the relevance and effectiveness of the programs. Some programs, such as Logistics Management and Renewable Energy Engineering, have encountered resistance due to perceived irrelevance to community skill development. The research recommends a comprehensive evaluation of the specific needs within the local area for an effective and well-developed implementation of the community program.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the process of empowering tribal children in the field of education carried out by Friends of Child Exploration (SEAD) in Jambi. The method used in the research was a qualitative approach with a case study method. The selection of informants was carried out using a purposive sampling technique to select informants consisting of 9 key informants, namely volunteer friends exploring children in Jambi and also Waris from the Anak Dalam tribe, as well as five supporting informants, namely Tumanggung, parents from the Anak Dalam tribe and also the community. The data collection techniques used were observation, in-depth interviews and documentation studies. Data analysis was done through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion. This research also used data triangulation techniques to test the validity of the data. The findings of this research were that empowerment in education provides a way for tribal children to learn how to read, write and count. If we look at the empowerment process carried out by the Deep Child Exploration Friends (SEAD) Jambi for children from the inner child tribe, the teaching and learning process begins with an introduction stage for all children of different ages after new material improvements have been made. What will be taught is differentiated from children's material, which is still in the introductory stage. Apart from that, if we look at the planning carried out by Jambi Children's Exploration Friends (SEAD), it is always adjusted to the situation and conditions in the field. There is no element of coercion, but it is carried out with a first approach and adaptation to the children, such as by teaching them to play first, eat and sing together. In the teaching and learning process, the methods used are also adapted to the children so that they are not boring and always look for ways to keep them happy during the empowerment activities.
