Abstract

olktales not only represent heroism but also construct symbolic mechanisms through which heroic action is transformed into legitimately recognized authority. This study examines the structure of heroism, the legitimation of mythological leadership, and variations in the construction of authority across three Tolaki folktales documented in Ceritera Daerah Sulawesi Tenggara (1983/1984): Tebaununggu and Sangia Maradapo from Kendari and Wulele Sawurondo from Kolaka. All three were originally narrated in Tolaki and subsequently translated into Indonesian. Employing a qualitative narrative-comparative approach, this study combines close reading with the systematic coding of dialogue, character actions, and event sequences. The analysis integrates Propp’s narrative morphology, Weber’s theory of legitimacy, and Bascom’s folklore functions. The findings identify three patterns of legitimation, characterized by distinct mechanisms of recognition and forms of authority. Tebaununggu constructs restorative legitimation through a reputation for supernatural power, heroic action, genealogical recognition, and restoration of social order, culminating in shared governance. Sangia Maradapo constructs transformative-institutional legitimation through education, protective action, social recognition, marriage, and the transfer of governing rights and responsibilities. Wulele Sawurondo constructs protective-cosmological legitimation through moral evaluation, religiosity, supernatural power, and protection without culminating in formal political sovereignty. Across the three texts, supernatural power and heroic action function as potential legitimating resources that become legitimate authorities through moral justification, social recognition, genealogical integration, or institutional endorsement. This study proposes a Narrative Legitimation Model of Mythological Leadership comprising six analytical components: crisis, activation of capacity, heroic action, moral evaluation, recognition, and socio-cosmological integration. The model demonstrates that heroism, legitimacy, and political sovereignty are interrelated yet analytically distinct dimensions in the construction of authority within traditional narratives.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the challenges of training for Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) teachers and identify the directions for their professional development in Indonesia. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, with open-ended responses used to contextualize the numerical findings. Data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 30 BIPA teachers from various educational institutions and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that teachers perceive BIPA training positively, particularly for improving pedagogical competence, instructional strategies, and teaching material development. Four major challenges were identified: limited training duration, insufficient teaching practice and mentoring, inadequate training segmentation based on learner characteristics, and suboptimal integration of digital technology. The study highlights the need for sustainable, practice-oriented, and technology-integrated training programs to strengthen BIPA teachers' professional development and enhance the quality of Indonesian language instruction in global contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and strategies of students’ verbal politeness in ninth-grade Indonesian language lessons at SMPN 1 Wonomulyo. The study employed a qualitative approach with a pragmatic analysis design. Data were collected through recordings and field notes and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The analysis drew on Leech’s politeness principle and Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies. The findings revealed 29 instances of politeness forms encompassing five maxims, with the agreement maxim predominating. Thirty instances of politeness strategies were identified across three categories. Negative politeness strategies predominated in interactions with teachers, whereas direct strategies occurred more frequently among students. These findings indicate that students adapt their politeness practices to social relationships and communicative contexts, a pattern interpreted as consistent with the cultural value of malaqbiq. The integration of both frameworks informs the study of classroom politeness and provides a basis for teachers to develop context-sensitive speaking instruction that considers social relationships and local cultural values.

Abstract

his study analyzes the representation of identity formation and self-image in the characters Alaska Tahta Wardana and Alana Juwanda in the novel Alaska by Nisaafatm. This descriptive qualitative study adopts a literary psychology approach, drawing on Erikson’s concept of identity, Marcia’s concepts of exploration and commitment, and Hall’s concept of emotional turmoil. Narrative passages and dialogues were selected through a close reading of the entire novel and analyzed comparatively. The findings reveal that Alaska maintains a cold and dominant social image while displaying emotional openness in certain relationships. Alana explores her understanding of herself through interpersonal relationships amid family conflict. Toward the end of the story, both characters show indications of changes in their relational orientations and a strengthening of commitment. These findings constitute an interpretation of the characters’ representation in the text and do not establish that their identity crises have been definitively resolved. This study demonstrates the value of a comparative reading of identity, self-image, and emotional turmoil in popular young adult fiction.

Abstract

This study examines how Indonesian language teachers draw on Bugis-Makassar cultural values in drama instruction and how their strategies vary across five senior high schools in Makassar. An instrumental multiple-case study was conducted with five purposively selected teacher–school cases. Data collection comprised ten in-depth interviews, fifteen non-participant observations, and ten drama scripts. The analysis compared teachers’ accounts, observation records, and the textual contexts of instruction within and across cases. Three overlapping pathways were identified: textual-interpretive, relational-communal, and performative-multimodal mediation. Case A emphasized instructions to adapt dramatic conflicts using local values, while case B involved interpreting characters’ motivations. Case C linked communal deliberation to rehearsal interactions. Case D used local stories as introductory prompts, according to the teacher’s account, and case E combined cultural performance elements with teachers’ artistic guidance. The evidence thus supports a tentative proposition that cultural mediation can operate through pedagogical decisions beyond the selection of local scripts. The pathways describe contextual teaching strategies; they do not establish changes in students’ understanding, character, or cultural pride. Interpretation is bounded by uneven detail across the reported sources and the purposive selection of teachers experienced in culturally oriented instruction.

Abstract

This study examines the erosion of traditional Bugis agricultural lexical occurring alongside the transformation of agricultural artifacts in Sidenreng Rappang Regency (Sidrap) from the perspective of material ecolinguistics. The study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, documentation, and a literature review involving ten informants in Panca Rijang and Watang Sidenreng Districts during November and December 2025. The data were analyzed thematically by examining the relationships among lexical meanings, the forms and functions of agricultural artifacts, ecological and cultural values, and their current status of use. The findings identified 20 lexical items referring to agricultural tools. Four remain in active use, while the other 16 are categorized as rarely used, very rarely used, no longer used, or extinct. The concentration of various manual functions in combine harvesters, tractors, pesticide sprayers, and motorized vehicles has reduced the domains in which lexical items such as pabbettang, rakkapeng, pangkureng, kallobise, and patteke are used. This transformation has also weakened the intergenerational transmission of knowledge and shifted ecological relations from collective practices based on locally sourced materials toward efficiency-oriented practices that depend on chemical inputs, plastics, and fossil fuels. The theoretical contribution of this study lies in conceptualizing material ecolinguistics as a framework that connects lexical erosion, artifact transformation, and ecological change within an integrated system of cultural signs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the linguistic stylistic features of Jean de La Fontaine’s French fables and Indonesian fables, focusing on diction, morphosyntactic structures, and figurative language. A qualitative approach employing content analysis was applied to six French-language fables and five Indonesian-language fables. Data comprising words, phrases, sentences, and figurative expressions were collected through a literature study, recorded, coded, and analyzed comparatively using Stephens’s stylistic framework. The findings reveal that both groups of fables employ a formal register, denotative and connotative meanings, and declarative, interrogative, and imperative sentences. The Si Kancil fables feature colloquialisms, reduplication, passive constructions, and cynicism, whereas the French fables exhibit variations in syntactic structure to achieve artistic effects. Both groups use personification, hyperbole, irony, and metaphor. These findings enrich comparative stylistic studies of children’s literature and can inform the selection of language and literature teaching materials that account for linguistic variation, textual characteristics, and differences between literary traditions, thereby supporting readers’ understanding of how fables convey moral messages.

Abstract

This study examines the instability of allegorical meaning in Nathalie Sarraute’s novel Les Fruits d’Or (1963) through a Derridean deconstructive reading. Employing a qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach, the study analyses six purposively selected excerpts that foreground allegorical expressions and textual tensions relevant to deconstructive analysis. The data were collected through repeated close reading of the novel, followed by the identification and selection of passages that most clearly exhibited binary oppositions, logocentric assumptions, and the play of différance. The selected excerpts were then subjected to close textual analysis to examine how these mechanisms destabilise apparently coherent allegorical meanings. The findings indicate that the selected passages disrupt conventional oppositions, expose the privileging of particular terms within logocentric structures, and defer or displace meaning through the play of différance. Rather than yielding fixed allegorical interpretations, these textual dynamics generate competing and continually shifting possibilities of meaning, contributing to the novel’s ambiguous and parabolic texture. The study thus demonstrates, within the scope of the six selected excerpts, how Sarraute’s avant-garde literary practice can be read through Derridean deconstruction as a site of unstable allegorical signification. The study is limited to six purposively selected excerpts and therefore does not claim to exhaust the broader allegorical possibilities of Les Fruits d’Or.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the cultural meanings contained in traditional utterances in the Siraman tradition of the Sun. ese community through an ethnopragmatic perspective. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using literature study and document analysis. The research data consist of nine traditional utterances in textual form contained in the Siraman manuscript published on the Sunda nyeni website on March 15, 2010. The nine utterances include bubuka, narasi, rajah, ayun ambing, narasi panganten ka Ibu Rama, jemplang titi, pupunden ati, jemplang titi ka Rama, and nimang. The data were purposively selected based on their representation of the core stages of the Siraman ceremony, as well as their dominant ritual functions and cultural meanings. The data were analyzed using an ethnopragmatic approach by identifying the forms of utterances, language use contexts, pragmatic functions, and cultural meanings contained in each utterance. The results show that these traditional utterances represent Sundanese cultural values, including respect for parents, religiosity, familial affection, moral education, and hopes for a harmonious married life. The use of Sundanese lemes reflects the politeness system and philosophy of life of the Sundanese community, particularly uyusilih asih, silih asah, and silih asuh. The study demonstrates that traditional utterances in the Siraman tradition function not only as a medium of ritual communication but also as a means of transmitting cultural values and preserving the cultural identity of the Sundanese community. The findings are limited to the nine utterances analyzed from the Siraman manuscript and are not intended to generalize to all variations of Siraman utterances among the Sundanese community
