Abstract

This research aims to identify the significant effect of lyric lines to teach students’ reading comprehension. The population was a senior high school in Samarinda. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with treatment in a single group of students. The researchers used SPSS to analyse the data. To find out the result of the standard deviation and the main score of the variables in a single class, the data analysis procedure in this research used inferential statistics. The result showed that Lyric lines significantly enhanced the students’ reading comprehension that was given to a single class and the class had been treated twice, with and without song lyrics. The fact that the second post-test had a mean score (85,364) while this score was higher than first the post-test (76,364). Proved that the lyric lines gave a significant effect which post-test 2 post-test 1. The paired sample score showed the significant value (2-tailed) is 0.00 0.05. In the words, (Ho) was rejected and (Ha) was accepted. So, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using learning strategies of lyric lines in enhancing reading comprehension for English lesson.

Abstract

This study analyzed the application and violation of Grice's maxims in marital conversations between Batak couples as depicted in the film "Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap." Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research focused on dialogues between the central characters, Bapak Domu and Mamak Domu, to investigate how cultural norms and gender roles shape communication dynamics within Batak society. The findings indicated that the maxim of Quantity was the most frequently adhered to, suggesting that the couple generally provided an appropriate amount of information. However, it was also the most commonly violated maxim, often due to emotional tensions or strategic interactions. The analysis revealed distinct communication patterns, with male speakers more likely to withhold information while female speakers adhered more closely to conversational norms, particularly in emotionally charged situations. This study contributes to understanding how cultural values influence marital communication and highlights the significance of maxim violations in navigating relational complexities. By exploring the interplay between culture, gender, and pragmatics, the research offers valuable insights into the evolving nature of marital dynamics in contemporary Batak society.

Abstract

This research investigates category shifts in the Indonesian translation of Paulo Coelho's novel "The Alchemist." The study addresses translation inadequacies that potentially affect reader comprehension and examines the strategic implementation of category shifts. Research objectives include identifying types of category shifts, determining their distributional frequency, and analyzing the predominance of specific shift types. The study employs descriptive qualitative methodology with document analysis techniques, examining data from the initial and final twenty pages of the novel. The analysis identifies four category shift types with the following distribution: unit shift (40%), structure shift (31%), class shift (19%), and intra-system shift (10%). These findings contradict Catford's (1965) theoretical assertion that structure shifts predominate in translation processes. The prevalence of unit shift reflects fundamental lexical disparities between English and Indonesian linguistic systems, where semantic equivalence frequently necessitates morphological expansion or reduction. Translators demonstrate a preference for unit shifts due to their capacity to preserve naturalness in the target language without extensive syntactic restructuring. This phenomenon suggests that lexical considerations supersede grammatical constraints in translation decisions between typologically distinct languages. The dominance of unit shift indicates translational prioritization of communicative effectiveness through pragmatic lexical adjustments rather than strict structural correspondence.

Abstract

A number of studies on Literasi Bahasa Inggris in SNBT have been extensively researched in educational communication; however, few studies have investigated the challenges of Literasi Bahasa Inggris queries among secondary school students. This study was conducted to determine the difficulties that high school students faced when answering Literasi Bahasa Inggris questions on the SNBT test. The method employed in this research is qualitative method. This study focused on high school pupils who had taken the SNBT test. According to the findings of this study, the most significant issue in the Literasi Bahasa Inggris test was a lack of vocabulary, which led to frustration when they saw vocabulary-related questions, and it was still difficult for them to answer questions about assumptions and hypotheses in the text due to a lack of logical thinking. They also believed that the time allotted to answer the questions was insufficient. So, according to the research, in order to overcome these difficulties, high school students must improve their vocabulary mastery related to Literasi Bahasa Inggris questions both at home and at school, as well as their logical thinking and ability to manage time so that it is easier to work on problems in the Literasi Bahasa Inggris section

Abstract

This qualitative study tries to investigate and figure out why the public followers, Indonesian people who are learning to speak English in tik tok, tend to produce English redundancies This evidence is derived through Uncle’s Clinton Space Channel. Redundancies are unnecessary, repetitious words which may appear before and after the main word. They make your conversation longer, but not better. https://www.engvid.com. In English usage, redundancies is usually defined as the use of two or more words that say the same thing, but we also use the term to refer to any expression in which a modifier’s meaning is contained in the word it modifiers (e,g., early beginnings, merge together, return back, very exhausted, very vital, very urgent and so on. They are redundant since they use more that one words. So the words early, merge, return, exhausted, vital, urgent carry enough meaning. Whether or not they realize, they can easily produce those redundancies when they response the questions in Uncle Clinton’s Space channel.  Redundancy, as what Steven explains that they exist at all levels of language: from phonemes and spelling, words and affixes, through syntax, semantics, and discourse. It exists in the reciprocity of linguistic, kinesic, and situational channels of communication.

Abstract

This study explores the use of speech act theory within the use of framework multimodal pragmatics to analyze the dialogues in Bad Boys: Ride or Die (2024). Focusing on the five main key of speech act categories such as assertives, directives, commissives, expressives, and declarations. The researchers investigate how these speech acts can make a character development, make an interesting narrative plot, and character relationships. Using a descriptive qualitative methodology, this research examines not only the verbal content of the dialogues but also the multimodal aspects such as body language, facial expressions, and tone, which work in order to reinforce and enhance the intended meanings. Through this approach, the study highlights the dynamic connection between verbal and non-verbal communication, revealing how speech acts influence the film’s emotional elements, such as loyalty, power, and emotional intensity. The findings demonstrate how speech acts drive plot advancement while also offering deeper insights into character motivations and emotional states. By using this multimodal framework, the research provides a comprehensive understanding of how pragmatic meaning is carried in cinematic dialogues, offering a valuable contribution to film studies and pragmatics. Ultimately, this study showcases the potential of combining multimodal pragmatics with speech act theory to enhance the analysis of modern action films and their intricate communication strategies.
