Abstract

ELT in literature is one form of teaching integration, which is considered effective way for learner motivation, and a positive atmosphere in learning language. This research presents the study of teaching integration by using poetry as a medium for enhancing students speaking performance. This aims to analyze how the students' performance in English speaking by using poem in literature. The qualitative descriptive method is employed towards research samples from 15 groups students at the Prose and Poetry coursework. Data collection techniques were taken by observing closely towards students' conversation activities by using poetry, which are further analyzed by using Hughes' speaking rubrics, such as fluency, details or understanding, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. The results obtained that the use of poetry as a medium for conversation activity impacts on students' speaking performance, particularly vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. In short, this finding is a very interesting way, which can be widely offered in ELT program, such as basic English.

Abstract

This research was conducted using the Classroom Action Research method, which was conducted to describe the application of the scrabble game to improve the vocabulary of the first graders of SMPN1 Bahorok. Classroom Action Research Method (CAR) is a method used to solve students' problems in learning English, especially vocabulary. The Kemmis and McTaggart design used in this study, which consisted of four stages; planning; action; observation; and reflection on each cycle. To support the research results, two types of data were collected; Qualitative data obtained from observations, teacher and student interviews. As for quantitative data, data from tests; pre-test and post-test. Furthermore, the data were analyzed descriptively and statistical analysis to determine the final result of the application of the scrabble game on the student learning process in Classroom Action Research (CAR). The results of this study indicate that the use of scrabble games for vocabulary learning in class I SMPN 1 Bahorok is said to be effective and can help students increase vocabulary. Student responses indicate that students are interested in learning English because students find the activity interesting. Simultaneously, student achievement obtained from the pre-test and post-test showed a significant increase. The mean score of the pre-test students was 56.42 while the average score of the post-test students was 74.82, an increase of 18.4. From these results, it can be concluded that teaching vocabulary using scrabble games in grade I SMPN1 Bahorok is effective and can increase students' vocabulary

Abstract

Nowadays, in 21st-century learning, English teachers are demanded to be creative in teaching. Using media in teaching is one of the samples of teacher creativity. This study aims to determine the teachers’ perception of using media in teaching English at SMK N 1 Kinali. This type of research is descriptive research through a qualitative approach. In this study, the researcher used purposive sampling, involving three English teachers at SMK N 1 Kinali who used media during the teaching and learning process in the classroom. In collecting data, the researcher conducted observations and interviews with three teachers regarding what media the teacher used in learning English and how the teachers’ perception of using media in teaching English. The researcher found several media used in teaching English by teachers including; graphic media, audio media, project silent media, media games, and simulation. In addition, researchers also found that teachers have a positive perception of the use of media in teaching English. The teacher already has an understanding that the presence of media will support the smoothness of the teaching and learning process. However, teachers do not always use the media during the teaching and learning process. In terms of using the media, teachers also experience problems including a lack of internet access around the school environment and attacks on the media by students for matters not related to the teaching and learning process. However, behind that, all teachers are also trying to prepare media based on student characteristics which include different ways of learning, different interests in using media, and different levels of understanding.

Abstract

Deixis is one of the branches of pragmatics. Deixis is contextual information that refers to a certain place, time, or object. In this study, the researcher is focused on analyzing social deixis in the comments on the royal family's Instagram account. Social deixis is related to familiarity and social status. Social deixis can also be defined as deixis which does not only refer to certain referent conditions but also it contains connotations that represent certain social classes. The type of social deixis is divided into two namely relational and absolute social deixis. The aim of this study is to classify and identify the kinds of social deixis in the comments of the royal family's Instagram account. The type of this study was descriptive qualitative because the data is described in sentence form. The data used in this study were taken from the social deixis in the royal family's Instagram account.

Abstract

This study deals with onomatopoeia in Doctor Dolittle novel by Hugh Lofting. The objectives of the study were to analyze the types of onomatopoeia that used in the Doctor Dolittle novel by Hugh Lofting, to analyze why onomatopoeia used in Doctor Dolittle novel by Hugh Lofting, and to investigate how the author describe the onomatopoeia word in his novel. The scope and limitation were focused about onomatopoeia words found in the Doctor Dolittle novel by Hugh Lofting. The researchers analyzed three types of onomatopoeia, there are Direct Onomatopoeia, Associative Onomatopoeia, and Exemplary Onomatopoeia. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method. The source of data  was taken from the Doctor Dolittle novel. The technique of data analyzing used data presentation, data verification and, data reduction. The research finding showed that there were 38 of onomatopoeia found in this research which consist of 7 words direct onomatopoeia,24 words assiciative onomatopoeia, and 7 exemplary onomatopoeia based on Bredin's (1996 : 558). Associative Onomatopoeia was the dominant types of Doctor Dolittle novel by Hugh Lofting.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kebutuhan siswa didasarkan pada Learning Situational Analysis pada mata pelajaran bahasa Inggris dalam Jurusan Teknik mesin di SMKN 2 Sawahlunto dengan merujuk kepada konsep dari pengajaran English for Specific Purposes. Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dimana sumber data dalam penelitian ini berupa angket tidak dengan siswa sebagai informan yang belajar bahasa Inggris dalam jurusan teknik mesin pada kelas duabelas. Dalam analisis ini terdapat alasan siswa belajar bahasa inggris di jurusan teknik mesin sebagai indikator. Dari hasil penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa alasan siswa kelas duabelas jurusan teknik mesin belajar bahasa inggris kerena kebutuhan siswa di jurusan teknik mesin dengan konsep pengajaran English for Specific Purposes. Siswa mendapatkan pembelajaran tentang bahasa Inggris permesinan dengan benar sehingga mereka bisa menerapkan bahasa inggris sesuai dengan dunia permesinan, serta mampu mempersiapkan diri di masa akan datang. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian di atas, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa kurangnya latihan yang dilakukan siswa membuat siswa sulit menerapkan bahasa Inggris ketika praktek lapangan, pembelajaran dan sulit berkomunikasi dengan bahasa inggris.

Abstract

The habit of reading will build and improve students' character and literacy. This habit will also help students become adequate readers, achieve a large vocabulary, understand and use complex grammatical constructions, and develop a good writing style. The reading habit of an individual depends on many factors, and one of those factors is gender. This research is aimed to compare the reading habits and translation skills of female and male students in English Literature Department at STBA PIA. The study is conducted at STBA PIA in Medan, North Sumatra. The sample, taken by random sampling, consists of 40 students, 20 female and 20 male students. The research design is a quantitative, analytical, and observational one. There are two instruments applied. A questionnaire is used to measure female and male students’ reading habits. Afterwards, the two groups of students are given a translation test to get data about their ability to translate. The test uses the scale instrument of holistic-based translation quality assessment (TQA). The distribution frequency of the collected data is analyzed using univariate analysis. An independent T-test (two-tail) will be conducted to find out the comparative data on reading habits and translation skills between female and male students.

Abstract

An abstract is one crucial element that contains an overview of a research report. However, the phenomenon found in several abstracts in students' theses is that the contents of the abstract have not been fulfilled according to the component of the abstract. The study aims to determine the elements of abstracts in the thesis of the 3rd graduate students of the UPGRISBA English Education Study Program. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The data source for this research is 17 thesis. The Researchers used a checklist document as an instrument and content analysis to analyze the data obtained. The results showed that in the introduction part, only 6 fulfilled the component, and 11 did not. In the method section, only one is suitable, while the other 16 are not. In the results section, 16 fulfill the components of an abstract, and only one does not. In conclusion, eight is appropriate, and nine are not suitable with the features of an abstract. It can be concluded that the abstract component of the third graduate student's thesis is still incomplete. It is hoped that when writing an abstract, the writer must pay attention to the abstract features.

Abstract

Language is the ‘species-specific’ and ‘species-uniform’ possession of man. It is God’s special gift to mankind. Without language human civilization as we now know it would have remained an impossibility. Language is ubiquitous. Language is a primarily human and non-instinctive method of communicating ideas, emotions and desires by means of a system of voluntarily produced symbols. There were some grammars in language development such as Traditional Grammar, Structural Grammar, Generative Transformational Grammar, Case Grammar, Stratificational Grammar, Tagmemic Grammar, and the last Systemic Functional Grammar. All these grammar gave some contribution for the language development. ThePart of speech, sentence pattern, syntactic structure are some of the contribution of Traditional grammar  and Structural Grammar. Rhetorics, philology and grammar is the first science in the language before linguistics. By the models of grammar, the people can identify the language development especially in scientific of language, begin from Plato and Aristotle era until to day.

Abstract

This study aims to determine The Impact of Using Audio-Visual Media on the English Learning Results of Grade VII of Sabilina Junior High School, Deli Serdang. This research is exploratory research in the form of a quasi-experimental design type non-equivalent control group design that employs a test group and a control group. The experimental group was treated using audio-visual media, while the control group using normal lecture method and printed book media. Information collection methods utilized English learning results tests and perception sheets. The information examination procedure employs the t-test to test the impact of utilizing audio-visual media on student learning results. The results show that the calculation of the normal post-test value of the test group is 82.25 which is higher than the normal control group which is 68.25. The results of the information examination appeared that the tcount 3,701 ttabel 1,729. This could be translated that learning uses audio-visual media has higher learning results compared to learning that does not utilize audio-visual media. To conclude, it appears that the use of sound media influences students' English learning results. After all, teachers ought to disseminate the utilization of audio-visual media in learning English to improve student learning results.
