Abstract

In Indonesia, where English is learned as a foreign language, speaking is often considered one of the most challenging skills for students to develop. Many students struggle to effectively convey their ideas during speaking activities, frequently feeling uncertain about what to say, which creates a desire for a more engaging and enjoyable learning process. To address this challenge, teachers need to be adept at creating fun and interactive learning experiences, such as utilizing the chain stories technique. The combination of learning techniques with media plays a crucial role in enhancing the speaking-focused English learning experience. This research aims to explore the advantages and disadvantages of using chain stories with visual media in speaking activities, based on students' experiences. A descriptive case study method is employed, with four students from an English course in Tasikmalaya participating in semi-structured interviews. Data is analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings reveal three key advantages of the chain stories approach: increased student motivation, enhanced self-confidence, and its suitability as a recommended learning technique for English classes. However, two disadvantages also emerged: technical problems and knowledge-related challenges during implementation. These insights can assist teachers in weighing the benefits and limitations of using chain stories with visual media as a tool to improve students' speaking skills and enhance the overall English teaching and learning process, particularly in speaking-focused activities.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an English listening learning model infused with project-based learning and digital scholarship for autonomous learners. Digital scholarship (DS) is one element of eco-literacy that uses digital tools and technologies to make teaching and learning easier. Project-based learning (PjBL) is much better at offering contextualized, hands-on learning experiences that encourage critical thinking in the face of challenging problems. The descriptors of autonomous learners are infused into the existing learning model to create a dynamic and enriching educational experience for autonomous 10th-grade students. Conducted at a senior high school in Bogor, West Java province, the four steps of modified design and development research—need analysis, design, development, and evaluation—were applied in this study. The data were gathered by observation, interviewing, and syllabus analysis of the existing learning paradigm and reviewing pertinent research on PjBL, DS, autonomous learning, and listening comprehension. After a review of the relevant literature, it was discovered that three of eleven PjBL descriptors, five of the twenty-five DS descriptors, six of eleven B1 listening skill descriptors, and two of eleven autonomous learner descriptors had been included in the current learning model. A conceptual framework is used to develop the existing learning model to be an English listening learning model infused with project-based learning and digital scholarship for autonomous learners.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate why Indonesian public figures mix some English words or phrases into Indonesian language when they are having conversation in social medias, like on TV, You Tube channels. The researcher also wants to professionally discover some negative effects towards the grammar, meanings of those mixing (Indonesian-English) statements conducted by public figures. All language experts agree that every language has its own standard rules to follow. For example, when we write, “There is three problems in this statement”. It is grammatically non-standard English. The verb “is” must be changed with “are” and the word “problem” must plus “s”. It becomes “There are three problems in this statement”. Let alone when we mix some English words or phrases into Indonesian language. One example, “Saya hanya mau sharing--haring informasi”. The questions are, 1). Does this sentence make any sense?  2). Does the user know the meaning of the word sharing? 3). Does this sentence produce the standard grammar either in English or in Indonesian language? The standard one is “Saya hanya mau berbagi informasi”. Besides, the words “sharing-sharing” is not available and applicable in English.  The researcher’s opinion is mixing the words into different languages is called “language destroyers”. It is expected that this study is beneficial for those language teachers, lecturers and public figures and also hoped that in the future language “destroyers” less and less exist.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the challenges and inhibiting factors that affect vocabulary acquisition in English language learning. The research was conducted using a qualitative method, specifically through structured interviews. Descriptive research was also employed to process the data. The participants were 32 second-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Nias. Six questions were prepared for the participants, with responses based on their personal experiences. The results revealed that many participants cited laziness as a significant factor hindering their vocabulary improvement, largely due to their infrequent use of English in daily life. Other factors included low motivation and interest, difficulties with word meaning and grammar, and challenges with pronunciation. These factors were categorized into psychological factors—such as low motivation, interest, and laziness in memorizing words—and linguistic factors, which included difficulties with word meaning, grammar, and pronunciation. Additional reasons identified were a lack of confidence in speaking English with others, frequent forgetting of vocabulary, difficulty understanding context, learning dependent on mood, and limited study time. These were further classified into psychological factors, such as lack of confidence and study laziness, and cognitive factors, like difficulty remembering vocabulary.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to ascertain the notable impact of utilizing the Busuu application on pupils' vocabulary. The Busuu program is an English language learning tool designed to enhance spelling, vocabulary, speaking skills, and word comprehension abilities. This study is conducted using experimental methods. The research samples consisted of an experimental class and a control class. The population for this study consists of eighth-grade students enrolled at SMP Muhammadiyah 57 Medan during the 2023/2024 academic year. The sampling method employed was purposive sampling. The test is multiple-choice. The research uses a vocabulary exam as its primary tool. The data, comprising 25 items, were analyzed using paired difference tests, specifically the Paired sample t-test, in SPSS version 27. The research findings indicate a disparity between the pre-test and post-test scores in the experimental class, with an average score of 65 and 76.54, respectively. Consequently, utilizing the Busuu program has resulted in a notable augmentation of kids' vocabulary. The analysis results indicate that the utilization of the Busuu application has a statistically significant value of 0.001, which is lower than the commonly accepted threshold of 0.05. This data suggests a substantial impact on the utilization of the Busuu application. Thus, the null hypothesis (H0) is refuted, and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is affirmed.
