Abstract

Mathematics is one of the subjects that students are less interested in, especially in elementary schools. The problems in elementary school are students do not focus on learning, are afraid to answer teacher questions, and make the class less active during the learning process. It is due to the lack of learning media compared to thematic learning during the mathematics learning process. Hence, this study aimed to develop a valid and practical snake and ladder learning media on solid geometry material and determine the effect on students' learning interest after using the media. The research method employed was the RD method with the 4-D developmental model. The subjects were 39 elementary school students in Palembang, South Sumatera. Through validation, educator, and student response questionnaires, data were collected. The results uncovered that the validators’ validation obtained a mean validation score of 88.13%, with a very valid category. The results of student responses based on trials got a mean score of 91.05%, with a very practical category. Besides, the student learning interest questionnaire results attained a mean score of 80.25%, with a very high category. It was not only seen in the results of filling out the student's interest in learning instruments but also during the learning process. Consequently, the learning process became active; students became interested in playing while learning and dared to answer questions voluntarily. It implies that this research is vital so that the learning media continues to develop to generate student learning interest, particularly in solid geometry mathematics subjects.

Abstract

Character formation is a necessary provision for early childhood to uphold morals and control themselves from the adverse effects of today's technology when they grow up. In practice, media use for character introduction still looks monotonous in early childhood. Therefore, it is inevitable that the researchers' creative solutions develop interesting and emerging media. Pop-up storybooks are learning media compiled by combining text and 3D image illustrations to resemble the real ones. Developing a pop-up storybook also aims to help educators introduce characters to early childhood, especially peace-loving characters. This study, thus, conducted the five steps of the ADDIE model as its development process: analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. This study employed an assessment instrument in the form of a media expert validation sheet, material, and character. In addition, media testing was conducted by Tahfidz Al-Quran Yamabi Kindergarten and Marga Laksana Kindergarten for children aged groups A and B. The analysis results highlighted that this book was feasible and valid. Furthermore, this book was feasible to be applied in instilling peace-loving characters in early childhood. For this reason, teachers are expected to periodically use pop-up storybooks and the like to instill other characters

Abstract

The problems in this research were backgrounded by preliminary observations results on the use of gadgets which caused inhibition of emotional development of children aged 5-6 years in Khairunnisa kindergarten in Lubuk Sikaping district, Pasaman regency. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of gadget use on the emotional development of children aged 5-6 years in Khairunnisa kindergarten. This research method is quantitative with a descriptive approach. The population of this study was 25 children aged 5-6 years in Khairunnisa Kindergarten divided into 2 study groups, namely group B1 (13 children) and group B2 (12 children). The data was gained with a questionnaire and was analyzed using quantitative descriptive techniques including frequency and percentage. The results of this research showed that the influence of gadget use on the emotional development of children aged 5-6 years in Khairunnisa kindergarten had a percentage of 72.2% in the influential category. The influence of gadget use on the emotional development of children aged 5-6 years can be seen through 4 sub-variables: (1) self-awareness, (2) responsibility, (3) prosocial behavior, and (4) duration of gadget use. These four variables had different percentages in which indicator 1 had 77.5%, indicator 2 had 74.3%, indicator 3 had 71.5 %, and indicator 4 had 65.5%. This result suggested that parents need to supervise more their children regarding their gadget use since specifically more than 2 hours per day of use tend to cause some aspects of children's emotional development to be hampered incorrectly

Abstract

Logical-thinking ability is one of the 21st-century competencies that plays an important role in an individual’s ability to be responsive in acting and taking decisions to solve societal problems. However logical-thinking ability can be different from one to another due to several factors, one of that is gender. This research, therefore, was aimed at identifying the relationship between elementary school students’ logical-thinking ability and gender. 149 students from 5 different elementary schools in Surakarta City, Indonesia, were involved in this research. The research subjects were taken by random sampling technique. The data were tested using the validity and reliability tests of logical thinking, which were then analyzed using a quantitative descriptive technique on SPSS 22 software with the Pearson Correlation test. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between logical-thinking ability and gender seen from the correlation value of the Pearson Correlation test of 0.210 and Sig. of 0.01 0.05. Hence, the logical-thinking ability is strongly connected with gender. The result showed that the female students’ logical-thinking ability was better than male students. These results can then be taken into consideration for educators to design appropriate learning so that educators can develop logical thinking skills for both male and female students.
