Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether curriculum has a significant effect on students' reading comprehension or not. This study uses a quantitative ex post facto method. The research instrument used consisted of tests and questionnaires which were distributed to the sample. The population in this study were students of class X from SMA NEGERI 1 BANGUN PURBA (200 students) and the sample of this study was 60 students. The researcher took the sample using proportional stratified sampling technique, in which the sample was divided into three groups proportionally: high, medium, and low curiosity. The results of this study indicate that curriculum has a significant effect on reading comprehension of students in class X. It is shown from the average score of students with high curriculum (83.5) which has a higher score than the average score of students with low curiosity (60). It is also shown from the results of statistical calculations that the value of tp (7.150) > tt (2.086) at the significance level (α = 0.05). From these calculations, the alternative hypothesis is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected.

The data that the writer collected is quantitative in the forms of scores representing how skillful the students in writing descriptive text. In collecting the data of this research, the writer used a pre test and a post test. In the first meeting, the writer gave a pre-test to know the level of the students’ competence at the beginning in writing descriptive texts. In the last meeting, the writer gave a post-test to know the increase of students’ writing skill after they followed the teaching-learning process using mind mapping.

Abstract

English is rich with derivational and inflectional morphemes which can be seen in its articles. The goal of this study was to find out and to identify the use of derivational and inflectional morphemes in The Jakarta Post newspaper. Therefore, a descriptive qualitative method was applied in this study. In collecting the data, document and note-taking method were used. The data were selected from articles in The Jakarta Post newspaper which concerned with Covid-19 issues and were released between October 26 and 28, 2020, the year where the Covid-19 had just spread out in Indonesia, and around August 25 to 26, 2021 where the world had invented the vaccine. This study discovered that the articles had derivational morphemes formed in several prefixes; un-, en-, dis-, some suffixes; -er, -or, -ly, -y, -ion, -ment, -al, -ship, -ize, -ance, -ness, -ee, -ist, -ent, -ity, -ive, the combination of prefix and suffix; em- and -ment, un- and -able, mis- and -ion, un- and -ate, double suffixes; -or and -y, -ive and -ity, and double prefixes; un- and -dis-. It was also revealed that there were some inflectional morphemes found. They were affixes -s and -es for plural forms, -ing for progressive form, -ed for past tense form, -en for past participle, -‘s for possessive form, -est for superlative form, and -s for third person singular form. However, the affix -er for comparative form was not found in selected articles in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The findings also showed that a single free morpheme can have one to three bound morphemes in it. Inflectional morphemes can be attached to a derivational morpheme and more than one derivational morpheme can be joined to a single free morpheme. However, it did not happen in the case of inflectional morphemes, as there is no free morpheme attached by multiple inflectional morphemes.

Abstract

A prolific and versatile Dutch writer, translator and orientalist Robert Hans van Gulik (1910-1967), aka 高罗佩 Gao Luopei, has composed a series of historical detective novels 大唐狄公案 Datang Digong An ‘Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee’, which concerns an illustrious district magistrate and statesman 狄仁杰 Di Renjie (630-704 AD), who competently investigates murder and corruption in Tang (618-907 AD) China. Upon publishing the debut work The Chinese Maze Murder (1951) in English, van Gulik renders it into a Chinese version entitled 狄仁杰奇案 Di Renjie Qian, which is the only self-translation by the author-cum-translator. In the Chinese version of The Chinese Maze Murder, the vast majority of metaphors and similes are translated by means of conversion and deletion, so they can be regarded as covert translations in the sense of House (1977, 2014).

The method which is used in this research is descriptive method. Descriptive research method refers to the method used to describe the data and the characteristics used to describe the population. The purpose of using the descriptive method is to obtain systematic, factual and accurate data that can provide an actual picture of the data that is the research material. Descriptive research methods should not be used in making causal relationships where one variable affects other variables. The source of the data was taken from the writings of 10 first semester students of the Faculty of Letters, Pamulang University, South Tangerang, Banten. In collecting data, the students were asked to write an essay in English. Students are given the freedom of topics to be written. In conclusion, from the 69 errors identified, there were 13 errors in the Morphological category and there were 56 errors in the Syntactical category from the total data found. From these results, it can be concluded that students make greater mistakes in the Syntactical category.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out whether teaching speaking using duck-cow games can improve students' speaking skills or not. The teachers who teach speaking skills have to choose creative and fun activities to learn with students. Games can be used to practice all skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), all phases of the teaching/learning sequence (presentation, repetition, recombination, and free speech), and many types of communication (e.g., encouraging, criticizing, agreeing, explaining). Using duck-duck-cow games is one technique to encourage the class to learn actively. This investigation is classroom action study. The classroom action study was conducted in 2 cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The fifth-grade students of Sekolah Alam Indonesia are the subjects of this study. The result of this study shows that there was an increase from cycle 1 to cycle 2. The result of teaching speaking using duck duck cow increases from pretest to posttest 1 to posttest 2. The conditions in the class become conducive and able to follow the lesson. Students were able to be supportive during class. Students can listen to the teacher well. Students can speak in English in front of the class. It means that using duck-duck-cow games in a language class can improve students' speaking skills in the fifth grade of Sekolah Alam Indonesia.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to look into newspaper editorials in the aspects of their lexical richness authors by editors from three countries that make up the World Englishes concentric circle: native English speaking countries, ESL (English as a Second Language) nations, and EFL (English as a Foreign Language) nations. This paper comprises the production of the Type Token which use editorial articles authored on the exact day in two dominant newspapers from the UK and the US as representatives of UK inner circle nations, two sources from UK outer-circle countries, newspapers from Malaysia and Singapore, and two online newspapers from Indonesia and Thailand as representatives of English For Foreign Language states. The study was based on Laufer and Nation's (1995) vocabulary theory, which highlights the creation of most frequency words lists (K1 and K2 words) and low-frequency word lists (AWL and Off-list words).  The methods used were by uploading text into a vocabulary profiler tool, such as Lexical Frequency Profile (LFP) or a free accessed online platform built by Tom Cobb at http://www.lextutor/ca/vp. The results show that the average number of tokens of off-list words in ESL texts is more diverse rather than in Native and EFL English countries.

Abstract

Two factors contribute to students' lack of passion and participation in reading classes. For starters, pupils' reading skills are lacking due to a lack of imagination, participation, and discipline. Second, instructors' tactics are less diverse and participatory. As a result, students are quickly bored and fearful of reading. To address these concerns, the researcher used action research in the classroom to design a metacognitive technique that included three key strategies: planning, monitoring, and evaluation. According to research, employing metacognitive tactics can encourage pupils to read more. This method also boosts pupils' enthusiasm for reading activities. The majority of the pupils was engaged and enjoyed reading, according to the results of the observational analysis of their reactions. Based on the survey has  results that reveal 80.55 percent of pupils fell happy do the reading and 75.94 percent of students participate in it. Finally, metacognitive technique can boost student interest and reading engagement in SMA Negeri 1 Panyabungan English books for 10th graders. It is intended that the findings of the study will be useful to other academics and teachers who are involved in conducting research and teaching initiatives, particularly in the field of reading.
