Abstract

General Background: In the context of globalized education, English communication skills have become essential for university students. Specific Background: However, many learners struggle with self-confidence and self-awareness, which are critical for effective spoken interaction. Knowledge Gap: While digital language tools are widely used, limited research has explored the role of audio-based peer interaction in fostering these psychological and linguistic competencies. Aims: This study investigates how the Tandem application contributes to enhancing students’ self-confidence and self-awareness in English speaking. Results: Thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with five international EFL students revealed notable improvements in speaking confidence and reflective awareness of language use. Participants reported greater ease in communication, reduced anxiety, and a better understanding of their speaking patterns. Novelty: Unlike previous studies focusing on video or text-based platforms, this research emphasizes the unique pedagogical benefits of audio-only interactions and the influence of multicultural experiences on language development. Implications: The findings suggest that incorporating applications like Tandem can enhance learner autonomy, reduce performance pressure, and support holistic language acquisition. Educators are encouraged to integrate such tools into curricula to promote confident, reflective, and socially engaged language learners.Highlight : The Tandem app enhances students' speaking confidence by providing consistent practice with native speakers in low-anxiety settings. It fosters self-awareness through reflection, feedback, and recognition of language learning patterns and mistakes. Audio-only interaction in the app supports focus on verbal communication and reduces performance anxiety compared to video calls. Abstract

Background: Role modeling (uswah hasanah) is a foundational element in Islamic education, rooted in the prophetic tradition. Specific Background: Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah, a prominent Islamic scholar, extensively emphasized the significance of role models in the tarbiyah process. Knowledge Gap: However, scholarly analysis of his contributions to the conceptual framework of role modeling in education remains limited. Aim: This study aims to examine Abu Ghuddah’s thoughts on role modeling and its relevance to contemporary Islamic educational practices. Results: Through qualitative library research and content analysis of his primary works, the study reveals that Abu Ghuddah viewed exemplary behavior not merely as a pedagogical method but as the essence of Islamic education, exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad. He proposed practical steps for integrating role models into education, such as adherence to Qur’anic and prophetic directives, alignment with sharia, and consistency between speech and action. Novelty: The study offers a structured interpretation of Abu Ghuddah’s model of role modeling, positioning it as a moral-epistemological foundation for modern Islamic pedagogy. Implications: These findings suggest the need for educational institutions to embed role model values into curricula and school culture to reinforce ethical and spiritual development alongside academic instruction. Highlights: Highlights role modeling as the core of Islamic educational practice. Emphasizes consistency between words and actions in educators. Proposes integrating prophetic values into school culture and curriculum. Keywords: Abdul Fattah Abu Ghuddah, Role Modeling, Islamic Education, Uswah Hasanah, Tarbiyah

Abstract

General background: Student worship discipline is shaped not merely by cognitive understanding of fiqh but significantly by the teacher's personal example and moral integrity. Specific background: Despite the critical role of teacher personality in Islamic education, empirical studies exploring how personality competence affects students' worship behavior remain limited. Knowledge gap: Little is known about the specific personality traits and contextual factors that enable fiqh teachers to effectively cultivate worship discipline in students. Aims: This study investigates the personality competence of fiqh teachers in shaping student worship discipline at MTs GUPPI Pangkatan. Results: Using a qualitative descriptive approach and triangulated data from interviews, documents, and literature, the findings reveal that effective fiqh teachers exhibit stable, mature, wise, and morally exemplary personalities, coupled with strong religious commitment and authority. Novelty: The study identifies internal (teacher personality and commitment) and external (curriculum, method, environment, parental and principal support) factors that support or inhibit success, highlighting the interplay between personal competence and institutional context. Implications: These findings suggest that enhancing teacher personality competence should be prioritized in teacher training programs to foster disciplined religious practices among students. Highlights: Teacher personality directly influences students' worship discipline. Internal and external factors shape teaching effectiveness. Moral integrity is essential for religious education success. Keywords: Personality Competence, Fiqh Teacher, Worship Discipline, Islamic Education, Student Behavior

Abstract

General Background: In English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education, critical reading is a core competency for developing higher-order thinking, yet many classrooms, particularly in East Kalimantan, still rely on outdated, passive methods. Specific Background: While multimedia and interactive tools offer potential for enhancing engagement, their integration into EFL critical reading remains inconsistent and often misaligned with learning goals. Knowledge Gap: Limited empirical studies apply the Triple E Framework—Engage, Enhance, Extend—in under-resourced, culturally diverse, and large EFL classrooms to specifically foster critical reading skills. Aims: This study investigates how multimedia and interactive tools, guided by the Triple E Framework, influence engagement, comprehension, and motivation in EFL critical reading. Results: Using a mixed-methods approach with 32 students, findings show that over half of the observed lecturers achieved an “exceptional connection” between learning goals and technology use, leading to improved focus, comprehension, and extended learning beyond class. Novelty: This research offers empirical validation of the Triple E Framework in large, diverse EFL contexts, linking teacher digital literacy to effective critical reading instruction. Implications: Results highlight the need for targeted professional development to equip educators with the skills to integrate technology purposefully, ultimately enhancing students’ readiness for academic and global communication. Highlights: Empirical validation of Triple E Framework in large, diverse EFL classrooms. Teacher digital literacy as a key factor for effective technology integration. Multimedia tools boost engagement, comprehension, and learning extension. Keywords: Triple E Framework, EFL, Critical Reading, Multimedia Tools, Student Engagement
