Abstract

The limited practical facilities in the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Technology Course in the Automotive Engineering Education Study Program at Medan State University cause the learning process to be dominated by theory. This study aims to develop a Smart Electric Motorcycle Simulator as an interactive learning medium to support students' understanding of electric motorcycle systems. The research method used is Research and Development (R&D) which includes needs analysis, simulator design, simulator table construction, component assembly, functional testing, and expert validation. The results of the study indicate that the simulator is able to operate as designed, characterized by the integrated functioning of the battery, controller, BLDC motor, throttle, protection system, and monitoring device. The simulator is also equipped with wiring terminals that allow students to assemble circuits, operate the system, and monitor voltage and current in real-time via an LCD monitor. In addition to increasing learning interactivity, the modular design of the simulator makes it easy to develop, economical, and suitable for implementation in laboratories with limited facilities. The results of the media expert validation obtained an achievement level of 90% with a very valid category, while the validation of the material expert was 88.89%, which is included in the valid category. Thus, the Smart Electric Motorcycle Simulator is declared suitable for use as a practical learning medium to support learning of electric vehicle technology in vocational education.

Abstract

Although groundwater is the primary source of clean water for most Indonesians, its quality is often compromised by physical and chemical parameters that exceed safe limits, such as high turbidity, a pungent odor, and excessive concentrations of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). This study focused on testing the effectiveness of groundwater purification using activated carbon filter media in a Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) tube filtration system. This study evaluates filtration performance in accordance with the Environmental Health Quality Standards (SBMKL) for sanitation and hygiene purposes, as stipulated in Regulation of the Minister of Health (Permenkes) of the Republic of Indonesia No. 2 of 2023. The experimental results show that the activated carbon filter operates efficiently; it is capable of reducing turbidity by up to 85%, significantly eliminating odors, lowering iron (Fe) levels to meet the quality standards of Permenkes No. 2 of 2023, and reducing the concentrations of manganese (Mn), nitrate, nitrite, and Cr⁶⁺ which were already within the standard range from the outset. Thus, the effluent analysis confirms that the treated water meets regulatory standards and is suitable for daily sanitation needs.

Abstract

Indonesia possesses abundant biomass resources with significant potential to support the transition toward a sustainable energy system. This study evaluates the energy potential of major biomass resources in Indonesia, including oil palm residues, rice residues, corn residues, livestock manure, sugarcane bagasse, municipal solid waste, and cassava residues. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was employed using national statistical data, government reports, and scientific literature. Energy potential was estimated based on biomass availability, calorific value, conversion efficiency, and energy losses during utilization. The results show that biomass has the potential to generate 30.76 GW of energy, equivalent to 12.8% of Indonesia’s final energy consumption in 2023. Oil palm residues provide the largest contribution (13.34 GW), followed by rice residues (7.12 GW) and livestock manure (5.49 GW). Despite ongoing challenges related to fossil fuel dependence, greenhouse gas emissions, and deforestation, biomass offers a promising alternative energy source. Furthermore, the Gross External Damages (GED) analysis indicates that biomass is more economically competitive than fossil fuels when environmental costs are considered. These findings highlight the strategic role of biomass in supporting Indonesia’s sustainable energy transition, climate change mitigation, and societal welfare improvement.

Abstract

The grounding system for the 20 kV switchgear at the Bukit Asam Tanjung Enim town site housing complex (capacity 591,147 kW) plays a crucial role in protecting equipment and personnel from overcurrent faults and touch voltage. This study aims to evaluate the existing conditions, compliance with the PUIL 2020 and IEEE Std 80-2013 standards, factors affecting resistance, and recommendations for improvements. Methods included direct measurements using an ETCR 2100A+ clamp meter, theoretical calculations using the Dwight formula (ρ = 30–35 Ωm), and a comparative analysis of pre- and post-maintenance conditions. The results show that the resistance after maintenance was 0.17–0.91 Ω (average 0.42 Ω), down from 0.91 Ω before maintenance. Theoretical calculations yielded 4.77 Ω (ρ = 30 Ωm). All values were below the maximum limit of 5 Ω, so the system was deemed serviceable and safe. Factors affecting resistance include the condition of the connections, corrosion, soil moisture, and soil resistivity. Routine maintenance proved effective in significantly reducing resistance.
