Abstract

Public open spaces contain various features that have psychological effects on human mental health. Water, as one of the key elements in landscape design, not only enhances aesthetics but also provides sensory stimulation, social interaction, and psychological benefits. It possesses therapeutic qualities that promote relaxation and reduce stress. Given the rising prevalence of mental health issues among adolescents in Bali, public open spaces incorporating waterscapes play a crucial role. The concept of a "healing waterscape" can be applied in such spaces, where environmental elements are strategically designed to improve mental well-being through psychological approaches. However, no clear criteria for healing waterscape design have been formulated, and it remains unclear whether such criteria are being applied in the waterscapes of public open spaces in Denpasar City and Klungkung Regency. This study aims to establish criteria for healing waterscape design in public open spaces and assess the extent to which these criteria are implemented in Denpasar City and Klungkung Regency. Using a mixed-methods data analysis with JMP software, the study identifies four key variables in healing waterscape design: social, behavioral, cognitive, and emotional factors. The design criteria that should be considered for public space waterscapes in Denpasar and Klungkung include activity diversity, site characteristics, spatial variety, acoustics, water shape, movement, flow, lighting and signage, and both biotic and abiotic components.

Abstract

The Simarjarunjung corridor area is one of the tourist destinations in Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra, which is famous for its natural scenery and culinary specialties. With the development of tourism activities, the appearance of buildings along the corridor of this area has changed. This study aims to analyze the typology of building facades in the Simarjarunjung area and its influence on the formation of the character of the area. The method used is a qualitative descriptive method, where data collection is carried out through field observations, documents, and interviews. The research sample focused on buildings along the main corridor of Simarjarunjung. The results of the study show that there are three main types of building facades according to the shape, material, and elements of the facade. The first typography reflects the old architectural style with wood materials and hip roofs. The second type is a modern minimalist building, mainly glass and concrete. The third type is a mixed-style building that combines traditional and modern elements. The diversity of these types creates the unique character of a tourist destination area that combines local cultural elements with modern needs. This study shows the need for design guidelines as guidelines for building facades that can strengthen the identity of the Simarjarunjung area as a tourist destination based on local culture.

Abstract

Architecture and film are two disciplines that are closely intertwined in discussing and visualising a space. Film cannot stand alone without architecture, architecture plays a role in building space in film by being used to convey stories, shape perceptions, and depict social reality. This research will examine the depiction of socio-spatial separation in Parasite and compare it with the physical setting of the area in Seongbuk-dong and Ahyeon-dong, Seoul, South Korea. The research method used is descriptive qualitative analysis using a semiotic approach. The results show that the film Parasite effectively depicts the contrasting differences between decent neighbourhoods and slums in terms of geography, land use, settlement quality, and accessibility. Seongbuk-dong, an aristocratic neighbourhood, offers high-quality facilities and easy access, while Ahyeon-dong, a slum, has low-quality services and limited accessibility. The conclusion of this study confirms that architecture in film has an important role in reflecting and critiquing social phenomena such as socio-spatial segregation, and emphasises the importance of more inclusive urban planning in reducing social inequality

Abstract

Indonesia's contemporary architecture has developed in response to globalisation, urbanisation, and modernisation, striking a balance between regional customs and global tendencies. This research analyses projects displayed at the Indonesian Architects Week (IAW) 2024 exhibition in order to investigate the state of contemporary architecture in Indonesia. Key architectural trends in residential, office, hospitality, commercial, government, and public areas are highlighted by the research, which groups these projects according to their function and geographic distribution. The results show that private-sector demands drive contemporary architectural practices, with Java and Bali & Nusa Tenggara having the highest concentration of projects, while Sumatra, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Papua & Maluku continue to be under-represented. A trend towards mixed-use architectural designs is also noted in the report, as demonstrated by buildings that combine several uses, including office-commercial, government-public, and residential-office hybrids. Despite these revelations, the study's limitations include its only dependence on exhibition data and the absence of primary research methods like stakeholder participation, field observations, or interviews. It does not, therefore, offer a completely generalisable depiction of modern architectural techniques in Indonesia. However, it provides a useful foundation for further research into the innovations, problems, and trends influencing Indonesia's built environment. To gain a more thorough grasp of how Indonesian contemporary architecture is still changing within regional, cultural, and economic contexts, future research should apply direct architectural analysis and larger datasets.

Abstract

The development of an area cannot be separated from the existence of public space, Public Space such as Simpang Lima is one of the important aspects in city development so that it can be utilized by the community, public space must be usable by all levels of society, including elderly users. Currently, the city of Semarang has experienced an increase in the number of elderly people since 2017 and continues to increase, special attention to elderly users is important so that this increase does not become a new problem in urban areas. One of the government's efforts to pay attention to the elderly is by creating public spaces. Public spaces in the city of Semarang, such as Simpang Lima, are still popular with the elderly. Many elderly people are found in the morning with sports activities, but according to the elderly, the facilities at Simpang Lima have not been able to meet their needs. So that it raises several problems in the field, these problems are the basis of the study, namely What is the accessibility of the elderly in the Simpang Lima public space? What are the obstacles to accessibility for the elderly in using public space facilities at Simpang Lima? The research method uses a qualitative approach by conducting observations, interviews, and literature reviews after which it is analyzed using accessibility requirements. The activities of the elderly in reaching and using public spaces are in accordance with the accessibility that has been provided, this is based on convenience and safety. Abstract

This study analyzes the uniqueness of geodiversity, ecology, and culture as the foundation for sustainable geotourism development in Brand District, Karo Regency. Using a mixed methods approach (questionnaire N=100, interview n=6, observation), the results showed that the uniqueness of Brand's geodiversity lies in the volcanic phenomena of the Toba Caldera such as Sipiso-piso Waterfall (120 m) and Bukit Gajah Bobok which are rich in potassium and magnesium minerals. MANOVA's analysis showed a significant difference in the perception of tourists and the public towards geological uniqueness (p<0.05). Ecologically, volcanic soils with low total dissolved solids (TDS) (<150 ppm) support organic agriculture, although they are threatened by land conversion (25% reduced agricultural land) and plastic waste (volume decreased by 30% through the waste bank program). Local cultures such as Ulos weaving and the Erpangir Ku Lau ritual are identity differentiators, but their marketing is limited locally without certification. The integration of all three aspects requires technological innovation (augmented reality for geological interpretation), diversification of cultural products (craft training), and data-driven spatial planning policies. Strategic recommendations include strengthening community participation through Pokdarwis, a circular economy through recycling waste into handicrafts, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to make Brand a model of sustainable geotourism in Indonesia. This research emphasizes that the synergy of technological innovation, active community participation, and holistic policies are the keys to the success of geotourism development.
