Abstract

This study investigates students' mathematical problem-solving ability through Coastal Culture–Based Realistic Mathematics Education (RME). Problem-solving is a critical 21st-century competency and a central goal of mathematics education; however, conventional instruction often fails to connect mathematical concepts with students' real-life contexts. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of RME on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities after they receive realistic learning based on coastal potential. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest–posttest control group was employed, involving 120 eighth-grade students from three junior high schools in West Seram Regency. The experimental group received coastal potential–based RME instruction, while the control group experienced conventional learning. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, independent t-tests, and ANOVA. The results revealed a significant difference in improvement between the experimental and control groups (p 0.05), with the experimental group achieving a moderate and effective N-gain (67.8%), compared to the ineffective gain in the control group (20.8%). The findings conclude that coastal culture–based RME is more effective in enhancing students' problem-solving abilities than conventional methods. This study contributes to mathematics education by integrating local cultural context into RME, providing an innovative framework for contextualized learning in secondary education.

Abstract

Metacognitive skills constitute one's cognitive awareness or affective experience that comes along with intellectual efforts. It represents one's awareness and knowledge about his/her own cognitive skills. Metacognitive skills affect one's conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Empirical researchanalyzinghow metacognitive skills specifically contribute to conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills through free inquiry-based learning is still lacking. This study aimed to examine how metacognitive skills contribute to individuals' conceptual understanding and problem-solving using free, inquiry-based learning strategies. To this end, a descriptive correlational study was applied. The independent variable in this study was metacognitive skills, and the dependent variables were conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities. Thirty-five students from the Elementary School Teacher Education Department of Universitas Nusantara PGRI Kediri participated. Data wereanalyzedusing linear regression analysis. The result showed that metacognitive skills contribute 48.9% to students' conceptual understanding, higher than their contribution to problem-solving skills (i.e., 30.7%).These findings demonstrate the important role of metacognitive skills in shaping effective teacher preparation and fostering reflective and independent learners. This study provides empirical evidence for integrating metacognitive skill development into inquiry-based teacher education programs to enhance conceptual and problem-solving competencies.

Abstract

The increasing concern about the decline in students' moral behavior has prompted the need for innovative approaches to character education, one of which is through the integration of local cultural valuesinto educational management. However, previous research has been dominated by descriptive explorations of local wisdom and has yet to yield systematic integration into the school management framework. This study aims to reconstructButonesecultural values into an innovative model for character education management in secondary schools. This study uses a qualitative, ethnographic approach with 100 participants, including traditional leaders, community leaders, principals, teachers, and community members. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, then analyzed using interactive qualitative analysis techniques. The research results identified threeButonesecultural values as the main local wisdom value concepts:gauandpombala, poromuindaposaangupogaaindakoolota, andtuturakanasara. These three cultural values appear across four organizational management systems in educational institutions. Quantitatively, the implementation function shows the highest percentage at 31%, followed by evaluation at 29%, organizing at 22%, and planning at 18%, indicating the dominance of implementing cultural values in educational practices. The character values found in theButoneselocal culture include responsibility (58%), cooperation (55%), empathy (40%), discipline (57%), and integrity (33%). Qualitatively, these findings illustrate the integration of local wisdom values in school management to strengthen the implementation of character education programs. Students have a higher level of social awareness and a greater sense of responsibility for maintaining local culture. Thus, this research contributes to the literature on innovative, contextually responsive culture-based education management. The local wisdom valuesare developed into contemporary character education concepts.

Abstract

This ethnographic study investigates the Ammatoa Kajang customary system in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, focusing on its "Pasang" tradition, which promotes simple living, reverence for nature, and resistance to modernization that threatens environmental balance. The research aims to examine the community's social structure, the role of Ammatoa leadership, and the customary rules shaping behavior and environmental interaction. Using participant observation and in-depth interviews with indigenous leaders, the study reveals that the "Pasang" tradition serves as a comprehensive guide for sustainable natural resource management. Customary norms, such as prohibiting tree felling and prioritizing forest conservation, have enabled the community to maintain ecological equilibrium. The findings underscore the significance of local wisdom in supporting environmental sustainability. This research contributes to cultural anthropology education by offering insights into indigenous governance and resilience. It also provides a valuable perspective for conservation policies that recognize and integrate the role of indigenous peoples in safeguarding both natural and cultural heritage.
