Abstract

Music learning practices in formal settings, for example, in the classroom, generally apply structured and systematic curriculum-based learning strategies. The entire learning process has generally been organized and implemented with guidance and supervision by the teacher. In Indonesia, music learning in formal schools still applies the standardization of Western music theory. In fact, music learning practices that offer local pedagogical values provide a very diverse portrait. In higher education, music learning that applies local pedagogy has been going on for some time. The Music Education Study Program (PSPM) of Lampung University is one of the tertiary educational institutions that has implemented music learning practices based on local pedagogy. Learning practices that are also performance-based are carried out with "informal" stages and processes. This notion means that local pedagogy is based on informal music practices in Lampung society. Informal music learning practices have not been recognized as the curriculum of formal institutions. This article looks at the concept of Lampung local pedagogy applied in music performance-based learning practices in formal areas. The central theoretical perspective in this research uses Green's (2008) thoughts on informal learning in the classroom. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with lecturers and students of levels 2 and 3. As a result, the concept of local music pedagogy that takes place in music performance-based learning at PSPM University of Lampung (1) provides opportunities for students to learn while creating; (2) provides space for collaboration and social participation; and (3) strengthens peer learning in groups.

Abstract

Numerous organological discoveries in the form of virtual instruments have surfaced as a result of the impact of developing digital music technology. To conserve and promote music based on local culture, organological innovations in the form of virtual instruments, such as the kendang jaipong, must be implemented. The goal of this work is to describe the development of the kendang jaipong virtual instrument from organological investigations through the realization of a marketable prototype. By sampling from the Kendang Jaipong’s actual instrument and converting it into a virtual instrument based on the KONTAKT Library, the technique utilized is practice-led research, also known as practice-based research. Pre-production, production, and post-production are the three stages of the design process. This prototype makes use of 137 samples that are based on a variety of chosen kendang sounds. To enable each type of kendang sound to function as a virtual instrument in DAW and Digital Music Notation programs, the audio samples are organized in a placement system on the keyboard keys included in the KONTAKT feature. The Kendang Jaipong prototype has been successfully tested on several music productions using DAW-cast and video score. The usage of the multi-round robin's function to have a more diversified sample, as well as the addition of the midi files capability, are things that need to be developed on this prototype product so that it may be used as a machine learning by users.

Abstract

Caring for the congregation through the presence of ethnic music in weekly worship and religious festivals brings a new atmosphere to the Eliezer congregation in Sentani. The purpose of this study is to provide an overview of the forms, impacts, and meanings of ethnic music in the Eliezer Sentani congregation. The ethnic music and singing are a collaboration of six different ethnic groups: Papua, Maluku, NTT, Sulawesi (Toraja-Minahasa), Java, and North Sumatra (Batak). The method used is a qualitative descriptive method that employs data triangulation through document analysis, observation, and two types of interviews: focused interviews and free interviews. Data is analyzed by combining these three data sources and then providing a description and conclusions about the observed phenomenon. The results of this research reveal that the worship with ethnic nuances in GPI Eliezer Sentani can be seen in terms of its form, meaning, and impact. The form of worship with ethnic elements involves traditional music components in various combinations, serving the purpose of adding aesthetics and color to worship and devotion. In terms of meaning, the use of ethnic music in worship acts as a means of promoting culture and as a tool for unity and togetherness. Regarding its impact, the use of ethnic music in worship has led to an improvement in the quality and quantity of congregation members participating in the worship.

Abstract

This article aims to describe and provide an overview of the analysis of the musical structure and violin playing techniques contained in the works in Suzuki Violin Book Volume 1. The research contained in this article uses a qualitative method with a systematic content analysis approach, objectivity, and generalization. The works analyzed in this research are "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star", "Lightly Row", and "Song of the Wind". The results show that the three works are simple works that are appropriate as teaching materials for educators in teaching students who are just learning violin instruments. This is evidenced by violin playing that only uses the A string and E string with 1, 2, 3, and 0 (open string). The works are composed of intervals that make the melody movement dominated by stepping movements rather than jumping. In addition, the techniques that appear in these works are simple techniques such as up-bow, down-bow, tenuto, and staccato, and a little complicated for beginners is syncopation. So, the three works are the right works to learn for beginners.

Abstract

Sape Minimalist music composition is the result of a musical dialogue between Sape (Dayak) music and Minimalist music through a hybrid approach. Minimalist music itself is a backlash mainly against the chaos and complexity of serialism and aleatoric music. In minimalist music, short melodic patterns with clear tonality and constant repetition are the main focus. In this Minimalist Sape composition, the Sape instrument is usually played for specific functions such as accompanying ritual ceremonies/customs, as well as entertainment, in this composition Sape collaborates with minimalist music elements and produces a repertoire that can be classified in the "absolute" music category. The hybrid musical dialogue approach, which combines two different types of music, has the ability to increase the variety and uniqueness of Sape music. Hybrids in Minimalist Sape compositions produce unique new musical variations with an experiment using a touch of digital sound effect technology that the tempo development of sape music assisted by other music can affect the hybrid concept realized by combining musical elements from Dayak Sape music with Minimalist music. The method used in this research was conducted through a literature review, previous repertoire review, and using an artistic-based research approach. The results of the composition found that Sape - Minimalist music using digital sound effect applications can bring breakthroughs with the concept of musical hybrids from Sape music and Minimalist music with a touch of sound design effects that produce music with new creativity.

Abstract

Gending "Kawitan" is a musical repertoire in the form of sekar- gending that must be presented in Wayang Golek Purwa performances. In its presentation, sekar-gending "Kawitan" has a very important role in the unity of Wayang Golek's performance as a whole. The purpose of writing this article is to reveal the role of sekar-gending "Kawitan" in Wayang Golek's performance based on its musical communication aspects. The method used is descriptive qualitative by conducting interviews with puppet artists and analyzing documents from several video recordings that have been broadcast online. Based on this method, the sekar-gending "Kawitan" has four parts: Kawitan Gancang, Kawitan Kendor, Bata Rubuh, and Gending Badaya. In terms of its role, gending "Kawitan" at least has a role as an instrumental music presentation, as a song presentation (vocals and instruments), as an illustration, and accompaniment for the puppeteer during Murwa, and as an accentuation in the ibing maktal scene. From the results of a section-by-section study, sekar-gending "Kawitan” has a tight structure and high musical communication complexity, due to the many interactions between musicians.
