Abstract

The study of the body in philosophy has a central place in Western philosophical thought. The body is often separated from the soul and the separation between the two has long been a topic of discussion in various discourses such as religion, myth and philosophy. In his analysis, Merleau-Ponty's use of the word ‘dimension’ refers to aspects of lived experience without minimising experience during life. One aspect of the dimension is sexuality. This research uses a descriptive qualitative research method using elements of the method, namely: description, interpretation, heuristics that focus on document studies. By explaining descriptively and analysing Maurice Merleau-Ponty's thoughts and theories about sexuality. The purpose of this research is to explore the understanding of sexuality with Merleau-Ponty's theoretical glasses. Based on the description above, the author draws the following conclusions: In Merleau-Ponty's thinking, the schools of intellectualism and in Merleau-Ponty's thinking, the schools of intellectualism and empiricism misunderstand the relationship between perception and consequently fail to understand the relationship between mind and body, self and world, and body and self and world. Humans are supposed to act and seek meaning in the world, the world is not regarded as contemplation but as an active role in the world. as contemplation but actively participating in it.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the Cartesian-Newtonian paradigm and the Thomas Kuhn paradigm within the discipline of the philosophy of science, as well as to examine the paradigm shift between the two. This research employs a qualitative approach using the library research method. Data were obtained from primary sources such as journal articles, e-books, and online media, as well as secondary sources including proceedings, magazines, newspapers, and scientific websites like Scopus and Science. Data collection was conducted by classifying relevant literature and analyzing it descriptively. The study refers to several works, including Hermawan (2009) on Islamic educational philosophy, Rahmawati et al. (2024) on theory and knowledge paradigms, Salam (2014) on Mulyadhi Kartanegara’s critical thought, and Utomo (2016) on the ideal concept of progressive law. The findings show that the Cartesian-Newtonian paradigm, influenced by Rene Descartes and Isaac Newton, emphasizes ontological and epistemological assumptions about a fixed and measurable world. Meanwhile, Thomas Kuhn’s paradigm highlights the stages of scientific paradigm shifts and frames knowledge from an axiological perspective. The study concludes that paradigm shifts reflect a dynamic worldview, shaped holistically by ontological, epistemological, and axiological elements.

Abstract

Character is important in investigating human nature, morality, and the pursuit of a fulfilling life. Character is a reality that is often interchangeable with the individual, so understanding character is used to understand a person. The modern world has developed Aristotle’s thoughts on character into separate research fields, so revisiting Aristotle’s original ideas can reduce the dichotomy. This research examines Aristotle’s various views on the nature and importance of human character. It reviews the various strands of Aristotle’s thought scattered throughout his writings to explain his distinctive perspective on character as a coherent and interconnected whole. This study uses a reflective systematic method to synthesize Aristotle’s views on character from the ethical, dramatic, and eudaimonic dimensions. The results of this research state that the core of Aristotle’s virtue ethics perspective is that developing virtues over time will maintain enduring character traits. The virtues are applied consistently through practical reasoning while maintaining a balanced approach between emotion and action. This development process involves individual choices and considerations. The Aristotelian framework of character is a continuous and dynamic process. This approach is a counterpoint to the deterministic and situational-based approach to human action. Aristotle identifies the development of moral and intellectual qualities as essential to achieving eudaimonia. Eudaimonia is the highest realization of human potential through reason. This concept embodies rationality as its foundation, thus strengthening the relationship. A virtuous character enables individuals to achieve self-sufficiency (αὐτάρκεια: autarkeia). Self-sufficiency is an important factor for achieving eudaimonia (εὐδαιμονία) as it reduces human dependence on external conditions for their well-being.

Abstract

This study investigates the significance and dignity of work through the lens of humanism, particularly in the context of global capitalism.  In this perspective, the meaning of labor is not just seen as an economic activity, but also as an intrinsic component of the human experience and the quest for meaning in life. This paper explores the impact of global capitalism on the meaning and dignity of work, and offers philosophical reflections on how humans can find significance in the changing world of work. Historical and economic approaches provide a framework for understanding how capitalism emerged and developed over time. Economists such as Adam Smith have outlined the basic principles of capitalism, including free markets and individual freedom. However, other thinkers such as Karl Marx have criticized capitalism as a system based on exploitation and domination. There is also analysis of the psychological and social nature of capitalism. Some theories suggest that capitalism is driven by the human drive to accumulate wealth and power. This leads us to the conclusion that capitalism is more than just an economic system; it is also a social and cultural system that shapes how we perceive ourselves and our interactions with others. Reflections on how humans might find purpose in a changing world of work.

Abstract

The focus of this study is to elaborate and criticize the church life of St. Yosep Maluk Church in fighting for its faith. The effort of the people in fighting for faith in Christ is a challenging journey. The presence of the Gold Mining Industry there since 30 years ago invited many people to come to work, including those who were Catholic. The church was first formed because the miners longed for spiritual nourishment through the Eucharist. However, their efforts to fight for their rights as religious people have encountered obstacles because until now they do not have a church to worship. Church life at St. Yosep Maluk Church is a form of minority rights that must be guaranteed by the state and society. The purpose of this study is to analyze the presence of people in St. Yosep Maluk Church as a minority that must be considered in the system of living together. The methodology used in this study is an interpretative methodology by conducting depth interviews and studying related literature. The findings of this study are that minority groups are first recognized and their rights are protected in order to create a tolerant and multicultural society.

Abstract

Loving one's enemy is a "philosophical instruction" that is difficult to practice in daily life. The level of difficulty varies depending on the scars left by the relationships that give rise to enmity. Intuitively, this practice appears highly contradictory, but philosophically, its seeds require special attention, as philosophy recognizes the principle of doing good and beneficial acts for others, even when there is no reciprocal exchange for what has been given. The question that arises is, "Which philosophical thought can initiate a discourse on loving one's enemy, and from it, what daily steps can be derived as a concrete practice of loving one’s enemy?" Gabriel Marcel's thoughts on intersubjectivity can begin a practical discourse on loving one’s enemy because the subject, that is, the individual, inherently needs to relate to the world. Naturally, the relationship sought is a constructive one, as reflected in his philosophical idea of esse est co-esse or being is being-with, which he introduces as existence together in the world. This paper aims to provide a philosophical assessment of the difficulty of loving one’s enemy based on Gabriel Marcel's philosophical thoughts on intersubjectivity, so that a philosophical practice in daily life can be realized to end enmity and build more productive relationships.

Abstract

Human resource development requires not only intellectual intelligence, but also moral integrity, critical thinking skills, and social awareness. Philosophy, as the basis for reflective and critical thinking, plays a strategic role in shaping the character and potential of individuals holistically through education. However, the role of philosophy in educational practice is often not optimized, either due to limited understanding or challenges in its implementation. The purpose of this article is to examine the contribution of philosophy in human resource development and evaluate the challenges and opportunities of its application in the context of education. The method used is a literature review of various scientific sources related to the philosophy of education and human resource development. The study's findings indicate that philosophy contributes to character building, developing individual potential holistically, developing critical and innovative thinking skills, lifelong learning, and appreciating diversity. But putting it into practice presents a number of difficulties, such as unequal access to education, inconsistent educational quality, and adaptation to technology. To produce a broad and competitive human resource pool, educators, policymakers, and academic institutions must collaborate to integrate philosophical principles into the educational system.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the analysis of suicide as a form of individual inability to understand the essence and existence of themselves in the world. The increasing phenomenon of suicide in various age groups lately shows various motives, but the main problem is often not only the pressure of life, but the loss of understanding of the essence and existence of oneself. This ignorance makes individuals vulnerable to choosing to end their lives when facing problems. Therefore, an in-depth study of this phenomenon is needed. In this paper, the author focuses on two main questions: why are those who do not understand their essence and existence more likely to choose suicide when facing problems? and how can someone find their essence and existence in the world when faced with difficult life problems? In studying this problem, the author uses a literature study method by referring to articles, documents and various journals and related books. Hopefully, this article can help readers to find the essence and existence of themselves in the world, so that when faced with a problem they do not immediately choose to end their lives as a way out to solve the problem. Life is basically a gift given by the Creator and should not be removed by force for any reason.
