Abstract

The focus of this paper is to explore Gabriel Marcel's thinking on suffering as an existential experience that involves human participation in facing the realities of life. Suffering is often seen as a painful and destructive burden in human life, yet in Marcel's view, suffering is not merely a problem to be solved, but a "mystery" that opens up space for deep reflection, spiritual growth, and solidarity. Through the concept of the participative human, Marcel emphasizes the importance of active involvement in the world, both physically and mentally, to build intersubjective relationships that enrich the experience of suffering. This participation allows individuals to move beyond isolation and see suffering as a collective experience that can provide meaning through connection with others and God. This research uses a literature study method to analyze Marcel's views on suffering and its relevance to contemporary life, which is filled with various forms of suffering. This paper finds that through participation, suffering can be understood not only as a personal burden but also as an opportunity to strengthen human relationships and achieve a deeper understanding of the meaning of life and human existence.

Abstract

The decline in the democracy index in Indonesia and the symptoms of weakening democracy throughout the world are urgent matters to respond to. In 2024, Indonesia is categorized as a country that is included in the category of flawed democracy based on a survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). Based on the Lexical Index of Electoral Democracy (LIED), out of 199 countries, only 40% have a democratic system with guaranteed voting rights and freedom of assembly and opinion. This situation needs to be analyzed. An understanding of democracy and its underlying elements is required to analyze the issue. A philosophical approach is needed to formulate the basic elements of democracy. These elements can be used to analyze and examine the problem of the crisis of democracy. A philosopher who has quite comprehensive thoughts on democracy is Jurgen Habermas. In this study, the researcher intends to examine the basic elements of democracy according to Habermas’s ideas and find their relevance in dealing with the current crisis of democracy. This study uses a literature study method, which focuses on interpretation and analysis of texts. Jurgen Habermas's thinking can provide a comprehensive picture of the fundamental elements of democracy. These elements are the existence of public sphere, civil society, communicative action, synergistic links between the system and the life world, public discourse, and the decision-making process through rational deliberation. The completeness of these elements will further strengthen the building of democracy. Reconstruction of democracy can be done by re-examining the completeness and integrity of the conditions of these elements to be improved.

Abstract

The main focus of this article is to examine the philosophy of ethical relationality according to Armada Riyanto in fostering ecological awareness among the Manggarai community. The human environment and other creatures uphold the principle of unity that is mutually complementary, in which a harmonious and interdependent relationship is established, supporting each other's existence. However, within this harmonious relationship, a critical question arises: Is the principle that declares the ethics of unity and harmony between humans and other beings still relevant today? In reality, the natural habitat is currently plagued by very serious problems. This awareness prompts the author to elaborate on Armada Riyanto's philosophy of relationality in addressing ecological issues in Manggarai. Using a qualitative and phenomenological approach, this study highlights the relevance of ethical relationality in shaping the Manggarai people's awareness of their relationship with nature. The findings of this study reveal that Armada Riyanto’s philosophy of ethical relationality can serve as a foundation for the Manggarai community to develop a sense of responsibility toward nature. By understanding the relationality between humans and nature, it is hoped that the Manggarai community can possess and cultivate ecological awareness, which is increasingly manifested in concrete actions—particularly in how they perceive nature as a “brother” whose existence must be acknowledged and preserved.

Abstract

Humans as creatures endowed with the privilege of reason cannot be separated from the thinking process. Thinking requires knowledge or something that is known in order to gain other knowledge in the process with certainty (true). The focus of this research is how the style of Immanuel Kant's epistemological thinking is relevant to modern science. Within the scope of library research and using a content analysis approach, by adopting the Miles and Huberman analysis model which consists of four stages, namely: data collection, data condensation, data presentation and conclusion drawing. The results of this study indicate that Immanuel Kant's epistemological thinking makes an important contribution to understanding the sources and limits of human knowledge. By introducing the concept of Copernican resolution and distinguishing between phenomena and noumena, Kant emphasized the active role of reason in understanding the phenomenal world. Concepts such as categorization, the concept of a priori, and the separation of phenomena and noumena, remain relevant in modern science. The importance of criticality, recognition of the limits of human knowledge, and awareness of subjectivity in the scientific process, also remain core principles in contemporary scientific methodology. As such, Kant's thought provides a solid foundation for understanding science today.

Abstract

Indonesia continues to face significant educational challenges, particularly in terms of instructional quality, curriculum relevance, and pedagogical approaches that often fall short in promoting the holistic development of student. This paper critically examines the potential of Don Bosco’s educational philosophy as a constructive response to these issues within the context of Catholic schools in Indonesia. Using a literature review method, the study explores the core principles of Don Bosco’s Preventive System, reason, religion, and loving-kindness, and their applicability to contemporary educational concerns. The findings reveal that Don Bosco’s approach provides a holistic educational framework that integrates academic excellence with moral and spiritual formation. The Preventive System creates a nurturing environment grounded in trust, presence, and personal responsibility. It emphasizes emotional intelligence, relational pedagogy, and a strong educator-student relationship, aligning with the values of Christian personalism, which upholds the dignity and integral development of each learner. Specifically, Don Bosco’s approach offers practical solutions to current challenges in Catholic schools in Indonesia by: (1) fostering a school culture of accompaniment rather than authoritarian discipline, which helps prevent behavioral problems; (2) promoting a values-based curriculum that forms conscience and character; (3) encouraging active and compassionate teacher involvement, which counteracts disengaged teaching practices; and (4) supporting a faith-centered education that is responsive to local cultural and spiritual needs. The study concludes that the implementation of Don Bosco’s Preventive System in Catholic education offers a strategic and sustainable solution for improving both character and intellectual development, while also renewing the Catholic identity and mission of schools in Indonesia.

Abstract

The research focuses on exploring the meaning of social harmony in human daily life in the midst of individualistic life. This exploration is based on the phenomenology of life according to Michel Henry through critical-philosophical reflection, as well as a little theological. For Henry, human consciousness always begins and is directed to the inner life; he feels himself and makes himself feel, this is called auto-affection. Inner experience becomes an important point for the phenomenology of life, but at the same time opens up opportunities for humans to realize the life that exists in others. Therefore, exploring the meaning of social harmony in this phenomenology will have an impact on the daily lives of humans who are bound by individualism. The method used in the research is a leatherative method through literature study. This research found that the phenomenology of life will produce intersubjectivity that encourages humans to pay attention to each other, as well as will have an impact on social ethics. The contribution of this research is to generate an attitude of care and love for others who are unique, valuable, and worthy, and create social harmony in everyday life.

Abstract

Traditional education systems are often authoritarian and dehumanizing, failing to encourage critical awareness and social transformation. This article examines the contribution of Paulo Freire's philosophy in addressing these issues through a critical and humanistic approach to education. This study uses a Systematic Literature Review method on 15 scientific articles published between 2014 and 2024. The findings indicate that Freire's principles, such as dialogue, conscientização (critical awareness), and a humanistic approach, can address dehumanization in conventional educational systems. This approach is proven relevant in the context of modern education, which demands justice, inclusivity, and empowerment. This article recommends the integration of Freire's values into formal and informal curricula to achieve sustainable transformative education.

Abstract

This study examines the pedagogical principles embedded in the thought of Thomas Aquinas through an anthropological lens, emphasizing their relevance to contemporary education. Grounded in Aquinas's theological anthropology and metaphysical realism, the paper explores three key dimensions: (1) the human learner as a rational and volitional being oriented toward truth and virtue ; (2) the teacher’s role as a facilitator of knowledge rather than its cause ; and (3) the relational and dialogical nature of education as a path to moral and intellectual formation (Torrell; Pieper). Aquinas’s epistemology, which integrates sensory experience with intellectual abstraction, supports a constructivist approach to learning, while his emphasis on disputatio fosters critical inquiry. The study argues that Aquinas’s holistic model—uniting truth-seeking, virtue cultivation, and relational pedagogy—offers a robust alternative to reductionist educational paradigms, addressing modern challenges such as moral relativism and dehumanized instruction. Ultimately, his vision reaffirms education as a transformative journey toward wisdom and beatitude.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse the relationship between utilitarian ethics and the use of social media by primary school children. This paper critically examines the potential positive and negative effects of social media use for primary school children from the perspective of utilitarian ethics. The hermeneutic method is a philosophical method that examines, explores and seeks meaning for a particular concept. The researcher tries to reflect and interpret the study of utilitarian ethics while providing a sharp analysis of the issue in the context of social media use for primary school children. The results of the analysis show that utilitarian ethics can influence the behaviour and use of social media for primary school students. The implementation of utilitarian ethics has both positive and negative effects on children's social media behaviour. The value of utilitarian ethics can develop children's digital moral behaviour such as altruistic attitudes, positive cooperation, productive and responsible actions, social awareness, being critical of social issues, and engaging in online learning communities using social media. The results of this analysis are expected to provide philosophical contributions for students to use social media more responsibly, wisely and in accordance with universal moral values.

Abstract

This research examines how Artificial Intelligence influences the structure of human knowledge through the lens of Martin Heidegger’s phenomenology and Miranda Fricker’s theory of Epistemic Injustice. Artificial Intelligence is not merely a technological tool but a part of Gestell that limits the way humans understand reality. This framing contributes to epistemic injustice, particularly in the form of testimonial injustice, when human epistemic authority is replaced by Artificial Intelligence systems, and hermeneutical injustice, when the experiences of certain groups are excluded from knowledge structures due to algorithmic bias. This study emphasizes the need for reflective awareness, the development of transparent Artificial Intelligence regulations, and social participation in technological design to prevent the subordination of humans to knowledge systems framed by Artificial Intelligence.
