Abstract

Ballance Ton Quoi is a French song that the researchers plan to analyze. This song is performed by Angèle. This song has attracted the attention of researchers, since it is impossible to discuss women without mentioning the social structures in which they exist. The purpose of the present research is to illustrate how critical discourse can reveal a text's hidden meaning. Aside from that, this study aims to demonstrate how social construction influences the perception of good and terrible women. Van Dijk's critical discourse analysis is used in the present research to analyze data. By examining and explaining the macro structure, super structure, and micro structure, the researchers seek to identify the implied meaning of this song. The present research adopts a descriptive qualitative method, with significant concepts highlighted and translated. According to the research's findings, the speaker believes that women should be able to value and respect who they are by not cheaply dressing or performing.

The purposes of this study were to characterize the lingual form of speech act of prohibition and the politeness strategies employed in the Minangkabau language to communicate prohibition. The data was taken from the interaction of Minangakabau people who live in Bukittinggi area of West Sumatra. The results demonstrated that prohibiting is realized in three modes of utterances namely declarative, interrogative for indirect speech act of prohibition and imperative form for direct speech act of prohibition. In addition, the politeness strategy used when expressing the speech act of prohibiting consists of bald on records, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off record strategy. It is challenging to conclude that a certain technique is unique to a given context because, in general, the choice of each method depends highly on the utterance's context.

Abstract

Communicating is a way for humans to convey information or messages that they want to share with others. Illocutionary acts often occur in everyday life related to speech acts between people. This research analyzes the illocutionary acts and how illocutionary acts are conveyed in the comments of Gordon Ramsay, who is a judge and head chef in the reality show Hell’s Kitchen Season 21 Episodes 1-2. The qualitative method with content analysis is used in this research. Data is taken from the available subtitle transcripts on each episode of this reality show. This study found 94 data on the type of illocutionary act by direct and indirect speech acts. The findings showed the types of illocutionary acts were representative (36 data), expressive (29 data), directive (20 data), declarative (5 data), and commissive (4 data). Representative became the type of illocutionary act most used in this research. In addition, this illocutionary act is most often conveyed by direct speech acts, as much 73 data while indirect speech acts are 21 data. This type and method of conveying were most dominant because Gordon Ramsay’s comments contained statements and judgments about the participant’s dished and cooking skills based on his beliefs. Therefore, his comments directly state the meaning he wants to convey without hidden meanings.
