Abstract

Understanding concepts is an important part of mathematics. However, students' ability to understand mathematical concepts is still relatively low. For this reason, learning media are needed that can strengthen these abilities, such as the educational game QuizWhizzer. QuizWhizzer is a learning media in the form of an interesting, interactive game, prioritizing cooperation and communication, and can create positive interactions between students through games in the learning process. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine students' responses to the learning media in the form of the educational game QuizWhizzer to mathematical concept understanding ability. This study is a descriptive study about the level of student satisfaction in learning using the educational game QuizWhizzer. The instruments used were educational games and student response questionnaires. The population in this study were students of class VIII SMP Negeri 8 Yogyakarta, while the samples were students of class VIII-H and VIII-I. This study concludes that the use of the QuizWhizzer which contains indicators of the ability to understand concepts in the small-scale trial class and large-scale trial class obtains a positive response from students. This result is evidenced by the average score in the small-scale class is 55, while in the large-scale class it is 57. The score is in the Good classification. For this reason, the use of the QuizWhizzer educational game is stated to be practical to use for learning. The results of this study need to be developed on a larger scale considering the different characteristics of students.

Abstract

This research was conducted to test the success of student learning through the media applied, namely a virtual laboratory in chemistry lessons at MAN 2 Rembang. This study uses a qualitative approach with the method of content analysis of objects during the use of a virtual laboratory. The results of the study found that the use of a virtual laboratory in chemistry learning was an effective thing to do on the daily learning outcomes (KKM 70) of students. The effectiveness of this virtual laboratory is due to an increase in student learning outcomes and understanding of chemistry subjects. When viewed from the discipline of collecting chemistry class assignments, using a virtual laboratory also reaped good and positive results, even in class X IPA-2 who submitted assignments in the 100% percentage, meaning the category was complete. This means that the stimulus from the virtual laboratory is able to make learning effective, attractive and increase student motivation in doing assignments in chemistry subjects.

Abstract

The issue of theme and rheme has attracted several researchers to do researchon theme and thematic progressions especially writing skill in English Language Teaching. Thematic progression is essential in writing due to its role in maintaining the continuity and information flow of the text. In other words, thematic progression highly contributes to the cohesion and coherence of a text. This study aims at exploring how a student develops a short story. The writer selected entire paragraphs from the short narrative in order to demonstrate developmental technique. The short narrative was then studied using theme progression analysis to determine how it progressed throughout the story. This study was conducted in descriptive qualitative. The researcher used Coding the paragraph, Analyzing the type of thematic progression of each Paragraph and Classifying and calculating the percentage of each type of thematic progression. In analyzing the thematic progression, there are three kinds of thematic progression: theme reiteration, the zig-zag pattern, and the multiple- rheme patterns. The findings show that the multiple- rheme pattern as the most dominant organization used within the short story, realized in 16 times (66,67%), theme reiteration is the second realized in 5 times (20,83%), and the zig-zag pattern is realized in 3 times (12,50%). The conclusion was that all types of thematic progression were used in short story.
