Abstract

Abstract

Background: Umbilical cord care is an essential component of newborn care as it influences cord separation time and the risk of neonatal infection. Open and closed cord care methods are commonly used in the community, yet their effectiveness remains debated. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the effect of open compared to closed umbilical cord care methods on cord separation time among newborns. Methods: This quantitative study employed a quasi-experimental posttest only control group design involving 60 newborns divided equally into open and closed care groups. Data were collected through observation until natural cord separation occurred. Descriptive analysis was conducted, followed by Shapiro–Wilk normality testing and Mann–Whitney test due to non-normal data distribution. Results: The results showed that the mean separation time in the open care group was 5.40 days, while in the closed care group it was 8.47 days. The Mann–Whitney test revealed U=6.000; Z=−6.654; p=0.000 (p

Abstract

Background: Childbirth is a multidimensional experience involving physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual aspects of women. Hydrotherapy as a non-pharmacological method is known to improve relaxation and comfort during labor, yet women’s experiences of spirituality and empowerment during hydrotherapy remain underexplored. Objective: This study aimed to explore women’s perceptions of spirituality and empowerment during hydrotherapy in the first stage of labor. Methods: This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological design. The research was conducted in August 2025 until January 2026 in Pekanbaru. Participants consisted of six women who had experienced hydrotherapy during the first stage of labor and were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke thematic with six-step analysis. Results: Five major themes emerged from the study, namely spiritual closeness, inner strength and self-confidence, self-control during labor, gratitude and positive childbirth experiences, and maternal empowerment. Hydrotherapy helped mothers feel calmer, closer to God, more confident in facing labor, better able to regulate breathing and emotions, and more empowered during childbirth. Conclusion: Hydrotherapy during the first stage of labor not only provides physical benefits in reducing labor discomfort but also positively affects spirituality, psychological well-being, and maternal empowerment.

Abstract

Background : Stunting is a manifestation of chronic malnutrition in children under five and has long-term consequences for physical growth, cognitive development, economic productivity, and the risk of non-communicable diseases in adulthood. Although the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia has shown a declining trend, it remains above the national target of less than 14%. Landak Regency is one of the areas with a relatively high prevalence of stunting in West Kalimantan Province. This study aimed to analyze the determinants of stunting among children aged 12–59 months in Landak Regency. Methods : A cross-sectional study design was used, involving 214 children aged 12–59 months. Data were collected in 2024 and analyzed descriptively and bivariately to assess the associations between risk factors and stunting. The variables examined included birth history, breastfeeding practices, child health status, deworming medication, and utilization of health services. Results : The results showed that most children had received basic health services, including complete immunization (96.7%), vitamin A supplementation (88.3%), and exclusive breastfeeding (92.1%). Bivariate analysis showed that deworming (p = 0.02) and exclusive breastfeeding (p = 0.04) were significantly associated with stunting. Children who did not receive exclusive breastfeeding and deworming had a higher proportion of stunting than those who received these interventions. Birth weight, birth length, early initiation of breastfeeding, history of illness, and frequency of health-post visits were not significantly associated with stunting. Conclusions: The findings emphasize the importance of exclusive breastfeeding practices and disease-prevention interventions, particularly deworming, as part of efforts to reduce stunting in Landak Regency.
