Abstract: The purpose of this study is to find out the equivalence of directive speech act and its translation techniques in The Lion King movie. The study used the script of The Lion King movie, and its two kinds of subtitles, namely the professional translator version and the fansub version. A qualitative case study is used as research design while documentation is considered as the tool. The results found 6 types of directive speech acts among 143 directive speech acts. All of directive speech act in the movie “The Lion King” are translated equally by professional and fansub translators. There are also 272 translation grouping techniques in this study: 1) 115 (42,3%) total of single group techniques in both professional and fansub translation. 2) 114 (41,9%) total of duplet group technique in both professional and fansub translation. 3) 31 (11,4%) total of triplet group techniques in both professional and fansub translation. 4) 12 (4,4%) total of quadruplet group techniques in both professional and fansub translation. Literal translation is the most found type of translation technique, intended to translate simple texts and dialogues. Therefore, an easy language requires an equally comprehensible translation as well. Keywords: Translation Analysis, Directive Speech Act, Professional Translator, Fansubtitle

Abstract

Politics is always linked to activities that have an impact on government or societal action and policies. For a variety of reasons, a speech can be a powerful tool, and any speech, particularly one intended to persuade, must be rhetorical. A persuasive speech, such as Donald Trump's, seeks to persuade the audience to accept his idea by making a reasonable claim and providing evidence to support it, because Donald Trump has the potential to be a positive force for the American economy. The purpose of this analysis is to identify how Trump uses discourse about a critical issue (the American economy) to portray a "us versus them" message. Two approaches to analysis were used in this study: Fairclough's CDA (2013) and Van Dijk's (2008). The outcome demonstrated power in his speech and demonstrated the closeness between Trump's administrations; additionally, his speech persuaded the people to accept his speech. As a result, the speech reflected both negative and positive aspects in lauding his administration's accomplishments.

Abstract

Reading texts or passages from textbooks are commonly used as learning materials in the Indonesian EFL context. This leads to the emergence of readability or reading level analyses for EFL reading materials using conventional formulas which, unfortunately, were originally developed for either English as L1 or L2 context. Moreover, there are alternative readability formulas for EFL materials that are relatively newer yet still underused in the field. Hence, this current descriptive study aimed to address this gap by attempting to analyze the reading texts in three Senior High School English textbook series published by the Ministry of Education and Culture, using formulas measuring the readability level without grade-levelling and using simplified EFL reading materials. In this study, the two specific formulas employed to conduct the readability level analysis were Miyazaki EFL Readability Index and McAlpine EFLAW formula. The results showed that the overall Miyazaki EFL readability score of all reading texts in the 10th, 11th, 12th grade English textbooks was 50, categorized as having a “standard” difficulty. Meanwhile, based on the analysis using McAlpine EFLAW readability formula, the overall readability score was 20.86, which was considered as “very easy to understand”. Eventually, it could be concluded that the two formulas could be conveniently used to analyze the readability level of all the reading texts in the textbook series. Moreover, the texts could be deemed as of “suitable and understandable” level for the intended EFL students in Indonesia.
