Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of motivation in improving the career of seafarers. Efforts to answer these problems were carried out by research that recruited eight active seafarers as research resource persons. The research was conducted using a qualitative research method with a semi-structured interview approach. Furthermore, interview data were reviewed and further investigated. The study's results stated that the motivation of seafarers who came from themselves, family support, and the shipping company where they worked contributed to their desire to improve their careers. A high seafarer motivation will lead to a high career advancement for the seafarers, while a weak seafarer motivation will cause a weak career advancement.

Abstract

Watchkeeping at ports is necessary to improve the safety of lives, cargo, and the surrounding environment. Watchkeeping and supervision are required in the process of loading and unloading containers. Supervision that could be more optimal can cause several problems in the loading and unloading process. These problems include loading errors, damage to ship inventory, and can endanger human safety. This research aims to measure the effect of optimising the port guard service on the loading and unloading process. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research. Data collection techniques were conducted using interviews, observation, documentation, and literature study—data analysis techniques through data reduction, presentation, and concluding/verification. The results of this research state that implementing watchkeeping duties influences the loading and unloading process. The lack of understanding by ship crews regarding the STCW 1978 Amendment 2010 regulations regarding the implementation of watchkeeping and the lack of responsibility of watchkeeping personnel in carrying out outstanding orders are obstacles to loading and unloading containers.

Abstract

This device, called a Scrubber, is a solution to overcome air pollution resulting from the performance of ship fuel. This machine's process requires indicator media in the form of seawater and fresh water, where this indicator is only used in certain situations and conditions. This research aims to find out and identify the role of scrubbers on low sulfur fuel in dealing with air pollution in maritime areas. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method. As a result, this scrubber provides efficient results by converting fuel containing SO2 into environmentally friendly fuel due to the role of indicators, which are processed simultaneously in the scrubber. However, this machine has advantages and disadvantages that are of concern to scrubber users. Therefore, supervision and skills in understanding the application of scrubbers are needed so that they can provide excellent and efficient results.

Abstract

Registro Italiano Navale (RINA), as an international classification bureau, 2023 will hold a campaign in every inspection of ships under its classification for fire safety. This campaign is based on data findings from Port State Control (PSC), which over the past 5 (five) years found a lot of deficiencies in fire safety on ships, which are not following the provisions of SOLAS regulations 1974 Chapter II-2 and also the skipper and crew, incompetent in carrying out fire drills, which are not under the fire training scenario on ships. The research method used by the author is a qualitative research approach. Then, data processing is carried out by reviewing the results of the RINA Classification PSC examination, Tokyo MoU, and Paris MoU, which are then examined as secondary data. The discussion in this study examines the discrepancies that become the findings of the PSC, including focusing on emergency escape routes, fire doors, fire detection devices and fire alarm systems, ventilation cover equipment, control facilities for power ventilation in the engine room, fire pumps, fix gas fire fighting systems and fire drills.

Abstract

Sea transportation is the primary means of transporting goods because of its lower costs and high accessibility. The use of ships in sea transportation has increased national and international trade. However, increased trade is not in line with shipping safety. Until now, sea transportation still poses risks in shipping. The risk is that the ship experiences an accident while sailing. Ship accidents are always a threat to shipping safety, the economy, and society because of their very detrimental impacts. Many factors cause ship accidents. One of these factors is human error. Human error in ship accidents is based on several factors. This research aims to classify the Risk Agent (RA) of ship accidents due to human error. The method used was a chronological review of 200 accident cases, questionnaires, interviews, and forum group discussions. The results obtained in this research were that the crew did not calculate the stability of the ship after loading, the arrangement and arrangement of the cargo on board did not comply with the stowage plan, the crew's skills and knowledge were lacking, and safety drills were not carried out, which is RA in the category of often being the cause of ship accidents. Meanwhile, due to carelessness in checking crew certificates, the ship's crew did not record the condition of the ship's machinery during guard duty, the equipment was operated beyond the standard time, the ship's sailing experience was lacking, they were not familiar with shipping lanes, and the ship's crew experienced fatigue, which was included in the medium category.

Abstract

Rapid technological advances make the maritime industry face significant challenges in managing environmental impacts, especially oil pollution by ship. Oil pollution not only causes environmental problems but also has the potential to damage marine ecosystems, human health, and coastal economies. This problem is exacerbated by the limitations of existing technology in preventing and dealing with oil pollution from ships. This article intends to evaluate the performance of oil pollution prevention and control technology by determining the effectiveness of existing technology, called OWS, and analyzing the obstacles faced in operating OWS. The method used in this article is a qualitative description referring to several literature reviews. The literature study results show that the technology used to prevent oil pollution from ships is OWS (Oil Water Separator). OWS effectively prevents oil pollution because ships can reduce the oil content in ships' waste. Meanwhile, the obstacle faced in operating OWS is the need for more maintenance, which causes OWS performance to be not optimal.
