Abstract

TOEFL test is requirement that must be done by some university, especially for English education department. From that situation, choose the right school to learn listening TOEFL. TEST English School is one of School or Course that focuses on the TOEFL preparation. This research conducted to describe the implementation of the TOEFL listening teachers at TEST English school in teaching TOEFL listening TOEFL. Descriptive qualitative method is used by this research. The data sources are the teachers of listening TOEFL, the director and 50 % students that learn listening TOEFL. Data collection technique in this research are interview, observation and documentation and three instrument there are interview guides, observation checklist and documentation. The data analysis technique in this research are reduction, data display and drawing conclusion. The result of this research are: 1) the teacher preparation in teaching listening TOEFL are syllabus, lesson plan and media, such as laptop, WhatsApp audio listening, projector, speaker, songs and Cambridge online dictionary, 2) the teachers do warming up before teaching, check the students’ homework, teaching by using clear explanation, good interaction with the students, solve the students’ problem, give the tips in doing the test and increase the students’ listening and give motivation to the students. 3) The evaluation done in every morning by doing test or scoring and done discuss the students’ problem in learning or doing the test in every Friday.

Abstract

This research was starting from the researchers' case about learning vocabulary for young learners who have to face the digital era, especially in the Pandemic era Covid 19. The researcher investigated one of suitable method for teaching vocabulary to young learners, which is called TPR. For this reason, the researcher wants to see the teaching of vocabulary to young learner using TPR. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The subjects of this research are the owner of English Box Course, a vocabulary tutor and learners. Data collection in this research was carried out in three ways, namely: observation, interviews, and documentation and using three instruments there are observation checklist, interview guide, and list of documentation. Data analysis was carried out according to theory Miles and Hubermen, namely: data reduction, data display, and verification. The results of this research is explained into three parts: 1) The implementation of Total Physical Response (TPR) method in the term of planning, process and evaluation of teaching vocabulary through E-Learning: a) There are two steps in the planning, those are make a lesson plan and media preparation. b) The process of implementation of Total Physical Response (TPR) method to teach vocabulary in E-Learning is started with apperception. c) The evaluation is taken in general of learning-teaching process that aims to make sure understanding of the students. 2) The implementation of Total Physical Response (TPR) method in teaching vocabulary through E -Learning produce exciting and enjoyable response of two students. 3) It is conducted oral and movement assessment test of the implementation of Total Physical Response (TPR) method in teaching vocabulary through E-Learning.

Abstract

Considering the importance of grammar knowledge in the process of writing essays to students, the researchers aimed to research and explain the grammar errors in the essays of students of the English Department at UNISKA Kediri. The research study is classified into qualitative study. The study analyzed 14 samples English Essays written by UNISKA students. To classify the different types of errors made by students and identify common errors in writing student essays are using triangulation method. The results of this research found types of grammatical errors in the students' essays consist of 7 total errors in the grammar section, including 19,66% were found in articles a/an/the error, 13,68% were found in punctuation errors, 11,97% were found in plural/singular error, 11,97% were found in preposition errors, 5,13% were found in tenses error, 0,85% were found in to + V1 error, and 0,85% were found in pronoun error. Those errors indicated the problems faced by students in writing essays. The most dominant grammatical error found is in the articles a/an/the error including 19,66%. Researcher also found students’ difficulties facing in writing their essays. That found students' questionnaire answers. Researcher found the students’ difficulties are selecting and developing topic, write a well structured sentence and paragraph, grammar, and vocabulary. Based on the findings of grammar errors in student essays, the researcher hopes students to be more aware of writing essays with the correct grammar, aware of the wrong grammar on their Essays and using Grammarly Application to help in writing essays.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to identify the types of errors in subject-verb agreement. The basic mistakes made by students in subject-verb agreements are a lack of knowledge about sentence patterns and their types. The study applied a qualitative descriptive method. The study is to describe and classify the errors made by the students and identify which parts of the subject-verb agreement have the most errors. The data collection technique of this study is by collecting the results of a worksheet assessment on subject-verb agreement given to 89 students. The data is analyzed by investigating what types of errors the students make and what factors often occur in subject-verb agreement. The results of this indicate that there are errors made by students including: singular subject must agree with a singular verb as well as a plural subject must agree with a plural verb, errors in a compound subject, errors in using the verb of the form have, and errors in be verb. The study implies that grammar and sentence construction, particularly subject-verb agreements, are basic chapters that must be trained continuously and become an important fundamental goal before students learn other things in English.

Abstract

Education is one of the sectors of life that has been affected by the global pandemic. As an attempt to stop the spread of the Covid-19 virus, one of the policies implemented by the Indonesian Ministry of Education is online learning. It is can be a triggered acceleration of education digitalization in Indonesia. Technology-based learning media and applications have been applied at the Universitas Islam Kadiri (UNISKA Kediri) during online learning in the pandemic era. UNISKA Kediri develops learning media in the form of a Learning Management System (LMS UNISKA) based on Moodle for lecture activities. One of the popular teaching media used as online learning is Microsoft Office 365 A1. This research aimed to prove the use of Microsoft Office 365 - A1 as online English teaching and learning media, especially in academic reading lesson and its challenges. The research was carried out at the English Education study program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, UNISKA Kediri. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The data collection was carried out by interview, field observation and documentation. After data collection. The data validation through a data triangulation process with a source triangulation model. The results showed that the implementation of teaching and learning using Microsoft 365 – A1 in academic reading lesson have been applied during the COVID-19 pandemic, the obstacles both lecturer and students have problem on their ability for adapting the habitual in online teaching and learning process. From the study can be concluded that using Office 365 A1 on Academic Reading in the English Education study program UNISKA Kediri helps students in conducting online lectures during the COVID 19 pandemic. The use of learning media according to the needs of learners is very effective in achieving learning objectives.

Abstract

This research was motivated by a phenomenon that occurred regarding the implementation of teaching English at the junior high school level during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMP Negeri 4 Kediri, which in the school the learning process had used the emergency teaching program, namely learning carried out online based on emergency curriculum guides. Descriptive qualitative methods are used in this research. Twenty resource persons were taken consisting of four English teachers at SMP Negeri 4 Kediri, one curriculum representative and five students from grades seven to ninth. The data collection in this research was carried out by interviews, observation and documentation and using three instruments there are interview guides, observation checklists, and list of documentation. The results of this research are: 1) The implementation of English teaching using the emergency teaching program at SMP Negeri 4 Kediri consists of three stages, namely planning which includes making lesson plans, syllabus, learning media, semester programs and annual programs; 2) the obstacles in the implementation of teaching English using the emergency teaching program during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMP Negeri 4 Kediri are the delay of students in collecting assignments, the difficulty of students understanding the material being taught, lack of self-confidence, assumptions regarding the difficulty of learning English (internal factors) and namely the lack of parental support for children, not all students have smart phones, and limited funds to buy quotas (external factors). 3) How to overcome the obstacles in implementation of teaching English using the emergency teaching program during the Covid-19 pandemic at SMP Negeri 4 Kediri are providing cell phone assistance to underprivileged students, increasing discipline in collecting assignments, namely by giving sanctions if they are late in collecting assignments.

Abstract

D-BEATS is a boarding school which activity is learning tahfidz and the language use either English or Arabic in daily conversation. English use is primary language in this research. In boarding school exists a class of morning conversation which class is giving vocabularies. The English teachers teach English in morning conversation by questioning and role-play. The teachers use those ways in order to make the students usual to make question and appear new vocabularies in any activity. In process of daily conversation, the students face the challenges such forget and limit the vocabulary, a chance to speak Indonesian if out of monitoring, and the basic challenge is when another person speaks Indonesian other person will respond in Indonesian too. English teacher helps the students to speak English in daily activity by activating the language department. It works like each student becomes a spiyer to spy about the use of English in whole daily activity. For whomever who breaks the language they will be noted by spiyer and reported to the language department to get punishment. The environment in boarding of D-BEATS like other teachers who live in boarding like Tahfidz teacher, Arabic teacher, and canteen keeper, they also try to service the students with English. The learners’ reflection after getting the teachers’ creativity shows that the students’ effort to speak English as often in daily conversation, speak English every day, every time, except free day language, feel free to speak English.

Abstract

Language is tool of human beings to communicate each other. People can express their ideas, thought, and feelings through language. One of the ways to learn language is by used song. According to Apsari (2012), by using songs the students tend to be more active in the teaching and learning process. It showed that people can learn English through song. Actually, in fact so many people do not really understand about figurative language, how to classify the type and explain the denotative meaning each figurative meaning. The research design used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The unit analysis of research is the figurative languages, contextual, connotative, denotative meaning, and the dominant of figurative which are found in the song lyric of Bruno Mars’s songs. The researcher chose five songs in the album Doo-Woops & Hooligans. The songs were Grenade, Just the way you are, marry you, Talking to the Moon, and Count on Me. In doing analysis, the researcher used identification, classification, and analysis. The result of the analysis showed that the types of figurative language in the five songs are metaphor, repetition, paradox, symbol, hyperbole, allegory, apostrophe, simile, and synecdoche. In the five songs that have been selected, the dominant of figurative language is repetition. The contextual meanings of figurative language were different from connotative meaning

Abstract

Blended learning is one of popular methods used in this period to improve student’s skill in EFL course. There are various problems that have been found in implementing blended learning to the students in the class from positive to negative impact. This study investigates student’s perception and problems in the implementation of blended learning in their EFL courses. Collected data will be analyzed in qualitative descriptive method. This research was only conducted with one English class in electric engineering students of Islamic University of Kediri. The result shows most of students have positive views on both online and offline learning that used blended learning as the method. On the other hand some students still have problem while joining online learning. One of their main reasons is technical problem such as internet connection, e-learning programme and etc.

Abstract

Listening skill has been neglected even if being the most necessary ability in daily communication. It has an important role to improve the students’ language. As learners of English Courses, they need facilities to support their learning process. The podcast is one of the primary facilities by which students are able to develop their scientific and general knowledge. The research intended to describe the preparation, implementation, evaluation, and students’ perceptions of teaching listening through English podcast at the pre-intermediate program of Seventeen English Learning. the research used a qualitative design. The samples are nine students at the pre-intermediate program of Seventeen English Learning. Meanwhile, the instruments used to collect data are an observation checklist, interview guide, and documentation. The collected data are in the form of observation, interview, and documentation. Thus, they are analyzed by using data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions and verification. The findings showed that the teacher did some preparation before doing the teaching, The teacher also did the learning procedures of teaching listening through the podcast, The teacher as well did evaluation of teaching listening through podcasts started from the beginning, during, and at the end of the learning process. The students’ perceptions after being taught the listening through podcast were positive and it’s able to encourage their speaking, pronunciation, and understanding the speakers’ speech.
