Abstract

Breast self-examination (BSE) is a breast examination carried out by the woman herself every month regularly. BSE as a step for early detection of breast cancer is highly recommended for women, especially those aged 40 years and over, because the higher the age, the greater the risk of developing breast cancer. This activity aimed to determine the level of knowledge and attitudes and carry out health promotion about BSE to the pilgrim women of the Baitul Chair Mosque, Teluk Bayur, Padang. 11 women of the society attended this activity. The level of knowledge and attitudes regarding BSE was assessed using a simple questionnaire consisting of five questions regarding knowledge and attitudes, respectively. The survey resulted in no history of breast cancer or family history of breast cancer; as many as 81.8% of mothers had never received information about BSE before. The level of knowledge showed that 63.6% of mothers have good knowledge and a good attitude about BSE, 55.5%. Health behaviour, knowledge and attitudes must be improved, including health promotion. Health promotion as one of the driving factors can increase the knowledge and attitudes that will manifest in BSE actions for early detection of breast cancer.

Abstract

Micro Hydro (PLTMH) Ngalau Baribuik, Padang - West Sumatra, has operated since 2012. It is currently the only source of electricity for the local community, some of whom work as chicken breeders. Based on community service activities in 2021, information was obtained that the PLTMH's electricity had yet to be utilized optimally. Meanwhile, chicken breeders also needed egg incubators to increase their productivity. This community service activity aims to design an IoT-based automatic egg incubator to optimize the use of renewable energy. Activities started with field visits, making initial plans, designing and testing the machine, handing over the machine, and disseminating knowledge. The designed a smart egg incubator worked well after a 21-day hatching test for chicken eggs. The IoT technology installed on the device also functions appropriately and can show real-time temperature and humidity on mobile devices.

Abstract

From 10–19, adolescence is a transition from childhood to adulthood. There will be changes in the shape and function of the body in a reasonably short time. Sufficient and adequate nutrition for adolescents is one factor affecting their reproductive health. This community service aimed to monitor nutritional status and detect early signs of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED). Monitoring of nutritional status is carried out for adolescents, especially young women. Physical health and healthy reproductive organs are essential in preparation for becoming healthy expectant mothers who can later give birth to a healthy generation. Holistic health education was needed in adolescents' growth to become better human beings in terms of their health. This activity was carried out in May 2023 at Junior High School, YPI Ciparay, and Bandung Regency. The target audience was young girls in 7th grade; there were 82 people. At the time, the students filled out questionnaires about their characteristics. Then the team measured the anthropometrics to determine the nutritional status and the incidence of CED by weighing, measuring height, and measuring upper arm circumference. The measurements showed that the nutritional status based on body mass index for most female students was standard, about 60.97%, and 41.46% of female students were CED. Counselling and health information were also provided holistically to increase the girls' understanding of their health status.

Abstract

Stingless bee cultivation in Indonesia, one of which is in West Sumatra, has the potential as an effort to improve the community's economy. Stingless bees, commonly called Galo-galo, can produce honey, propolis, and bee pollen, which have many benefits and produce high selling power. The community service activity accompanying the Bukik Nabu Business (UBUNA) aimed to develop the Galo-galo cultivation business in the Limau Manis village. This village has optimum natural conditions to cultivate stingless bees due to the availability of feed plant surroundings. The method used directly assisted the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises of UBUNA. It started by adding the number of colonies to the community, harvesting independently on the type of Heterotrigona itama and Geniotrigona thoracica, upscaling branding, making product labels, product promotions, legality, and participating in collaborative events and festivals.

Abstract

Street lighting is needed to ensure road users' smooth running and safety. Lack of light will create a high risk of accidents and crime on the road. Many areas in Indonesia in general and West Sumatra in particular, mainly rural areas, still need street lighting due to the need for regional capacity to provide lighting on public roads. This activity implemented street lighting in Nagari Lagan Mudik Punggasan, Linggo Sari Baganti District, Pesisir Selatan District, West Sumatra Province. A total of five light units have been installed in four different locations. Installation of lights using a pole made of wood as high as 4 meters on the 20 KV distribution electricity post and the welcome board of the village. The lights work automatically and can be active when dark and off when bright. The lamp's working principle utilises solar panels, which produce electricity during the day. The source of electrical energy used by the light comes from a battery that a solar panel has charged. This system is expected to overcome the village's lack of street lighting and use clean, environmentally friendly energy sources.

Abstract

The planning for the development of a mathematics learning module for residents studying package C based on the open-source platform Scilab at the Community Learning Center (PKBM) Karang Putih is one of the solutions to address the lack of facilities, especially open-source learning media. The activity plan started with discussions and information sharing. In this stage, discussions and experiences were shared regarding the Scilab-based mathematics learning module for package C learners. The second activity is the analysis of the module's needs. Based on the discussion's outcomes, decisions will be made about the type of module to be created, the required features, potential challenges, necessary resources for the development process, and so on. The third activity is the design of the learning module. During this phase, the interface and layout of the open-source Scilab-based mathematics learning module are designed. The final activity is the development of the learning module. This stage involves implementing the outcomes of the analysis and design of the mathematics learning module. It also includes testing to ensure that all functions work as intended. By following this planned process, the development of the mathematics learning module for package C learners using Scilab will be expected to provide a valuable open-source learning resource at the Community Learning Center (PKBM) Karang Putih.

Abstract

Forage is all food ingredients derived from plants, in the form of leaves, sometimes including stems, twigs, and flowers. Included are grasses, legumes and other plants. All can be fed for ruminants in two forms, i.e. fresh and dry forage. Forages contain almost all the substances animals need. The urgency of forage becomes a crucial point in increasing livestock productivity. The success of a livestock business depends on its feed management. Feed requirements of each animal vary according to the type, age, body weight, environmental conditions and physiological conditions of livestock. Community engagement was carried out with the Batu Kalang Indah cattle group. As many as 20 farmers attended the counselling activity. In addition to socialization activities, 4,000 stalks of grass were also planted, under the name King Grass, using a demonstration method for the groups. The community service activities carried out were responded to positively by the Batu Kalang Indah cattle group.

Abstract

The Penta-helix collaboration on disaster preparedness requires a comprehensive and collaborative role between various fields in society as an initiative from the National Agency for Disaster Countermeasure by strengthening the role of academics, government, the private sector, organizations and the community itself. This activity aims to evaluate the disaster preparedness necessity of the community after the 7.3 magnitude earthquake through a focus group discussion of the disaster preparedness penta-helix collaboration team in a district of West Sumatra. This activity was carried out on May 24. This activity invited disaster nursing experts from the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong. The activity was carried out with focus group discussions inviting various essential community disaster preparedness stakeholders, namely the Faculty of Nursing Universitas Andalas, BNPB, BASARNAS, Ministry of Health, Indonesia Red Cross (PMI), and community leaders. On this occasion, thematic results were obtained from focus group discussions on the importance of community empowerment, strengthening family values and vulnerable groups’ advocacy. Through evaluating disaster preparedness planning, it is crucial to know the need to be met after the community responds to an actual disaster event. The collaborative role of disaster penta-helix stakeholders can provide recommendations for strengthening disaster preparedness planning.
