Abstract

The study aims to identify the learning resources that are employed in a language center at Indonesia's oldest university both for local and international foreign students. The study uses descriptive qualitative as the main approach through interviews with an English teacher coordinator and learning resources documentation analysis. The interview data and documents were analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that there is consideration of both types of classes in the same class, the study findings indicate that the instructional materials used for them are typically similar. Teachers still face difficulties since international students must attend classrooms where the bulk of the students speak Indonesian even though they still struggle to understand the language. In addition, this Pre-Intermediate program makes use of digital instructional resources. This is done since textbook-based teaching materials are viewed as being out of date and becoming less and less relevant to modern advancements. To help teachers improve their lesson plans and make them more relevant in the future, it is believed that the research's findings would be useful as evaluation material.

The writer analyzed the data, identified errors in children's pronunciation, classified, discovered, and concluded the data. As a result, most 5-year-old preschoolers make consonant pronunciation errors. Students mispronounce eight consonants. They are [tʃ], [ʤ], [θ], [s, [z], [ʃ], and [v]. The sound [tʃ] is changed by the sound [k], [ʤ] is changed by the sound [d], [θ] is changed by the sound [t], [ʃ] is changed by [s], and [v] is changed by [p]. Then, there is a [s] sound and a [z] sound when deletion occurs. Students also make articulation errors because some English consonant sounds do not exist in Indonesian, which is one of the factors that allows students to replace or change English sounds.

Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the self-efficacy of EFL students regarding their use of the QuillBot paraphrasing tool in academic writing. A qualitative research method was employed, and data were gathered through interviews. The participants consisted of four EFL students who were currently in the process of writing their theses and utilizing the QuillBot paraphrasing tool. Data analysis was conducted using NVIVO thematic analysis. The findings indicated that EFL students' self-efficacy in utilizing the QuillBot paraphrasing tool was not satisfactory. This lack of self-efficacy was influenced by various factors, including behavioral, social, and personal aspects. Among these factors, behavioral elements had the most significant impact as they directly affected the students' competence in academic writing. The participants' belief in their own academic writing abilities was undermined by behavioral factors, as they experienced difficulties in vocabulary and grammar usage. Furthermore, the study revealed that the social environment played a crucial role in enhancing EFL students' self-efficacy. Specifically, the support and encouragement received from lecturers and classmates positively influenced the participants' self-belief and confidence in utilizing the QuillBot paraphrasing tool. In conclusion, this research suggests that EFL students' self-efficacy in using the QuillBot paraphrasing tool for academic writing can be improved by addressing behavioral challenges and fostering a supportive social environment.

Abstract

This study employs a corpus linguistic approach, utilizing qualitative and quantitative concurrent mixed methods, to analyze epistemic modal lexical verbs (EMLVs) in George W. Bush's speeches. The dataset comprises six speeches delivered by the former president between September 11, 2001, and December 16, 2004, a period of significant importance in the Middle East, totaling 24,209 words with 308 instances of EMLVs. Software tools, including AntConc version 3.5.9 (last updated in December 2020), were utilized to extract modal expressions from these speeches. The research aims to elucidate how George W. Bush utilized EMLVs to persuade audiences. The study identifies nine primary functions of EMLVs in State of the Union speeches, encompassing Assertion, Assumption, Conviction, Recommendation, Anticipation, Tricky/Elusiveness, Desire, Hedging, and Contemplation. Conversely, War speeches exhibit eight functions, including Assertion, Hedging, Desire, Conviction, Likelihood/Possibility, Anticipation, Tricky/Elusiveness, and Prediction. The findings indicate that Assertion emerges as the most frequently employed function in both genres, highlighting the pivotal role of EMLVs in political discourse for motivating, advancing agendas, and garnering support for initiatives.
