Abstract

The appearance of the Portuguese fleet in the Indian Ocean and the Straits of Malacca was the starting factor for triggering colonialism in Nusantara. The emergence of the fleet which then continued to the domination of the Portuguese on the one hand had disrupted the expansion of the Ottoman Turks who had controlled Egypt and the Arabian Penisula. On the other hand, it was also the main factor that encouraged the emergence and development of the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate as a resistance movement or anti-colonialism against the Portuguese. This article will examine how the emergence of the Portuguese in the Indian waters and the Malacca Strait has become the main driver for the emergence of the anti-colonialism movement initiated by the Sultanate of Aceh. As well as the author continues by concluding that it was the the anti-colonialism movement became the main factor in establishing the relationship between the Aceh Darussalam Sultanate and the Ottoman Turks. However, this was because the Ottoman Turks also had the same interests as Aceh, namely against Portuguese domination in the Indian Ocean. To Ensure their trade flocks and Hajj route safe. The conclusion obtained is that the domination of the Portuguese in the Indian Ocean and the Straits of Malacca has indirectly become the main factor in the realization of military and even economic cooperation relations between the two Islamic empires. This paper is a research of literature and historiography using a narrative descriptive method, presenting history in combination with chronology and correlations between each event.

Abstract

All the journeys and tours aimed at gaining knowledge about other peoples and lands seem to have achieved the set goals. Those who have tried to have a successful trip, have never ignored the upshot of their trip, but have benefited from the results and experiences and presented them to others in the form of a travelogue. One can argue that the product of the account of these travelogues seems to be most of the concepts related to unity and human relations and the necessity to understand other societies. This research aims to investigate one of the travelogues written in the Abbasid era (656-1258), in the 10th century, namely, Ibn Faḍlan’s travelogue, which is the product of a journey to the lands of the Persians, Turks, Saqaliba, and Khazars. To this end, in the first section, using the analytical method, the course of and reasons for his journey as well as its effects will be discussed. Then, based on the analytical and comparative method, the second section deals with the Saqaliba and their role in the region, as well as relevant texts focusing on the culture and tradition of the Saqaliba and their classification.According to the findings of this research, it was Ibn Faḍlan who for the first time, provided information about Saqaliba and their relations with Bulgaria and the Slavic race. More importantly, as a political envoy, apart from his special mission, which was to promote Islam and announce the Caliph's support for Saqaliba against the Khazars, he gives an account of the culture and customs in Europe and non-Muslim countries to the Muslims and the Caliph. This report is actually the first account of European non-Muslim customs given to the caliphate system.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper discusses the development of the spatial structure and layout of the city of Padang over time, from its early formation phase, through the colonial period, the era of independence, and into the post-independence period. The study employs a systematic historical approach through four main stages: heuristics (source collection), criticism (source evaluation and verification), interpretation (analysis of meaning and relationships between data), and historiography (narrative and analytical historical writing). The research findings indicate that the city of Padang has undergone significant changes in physical, social, economic, and functional aspects. The colonial period stands out as one of the most decisive phases, during which Padang rapidly developed as a center of government, trade, military, and transportation on the west coast of Sumatra. This development was driven by several strategic factors, including advantageous geographical location, well-organized colonial governance, the influx of migrants from various ethnic backgrounds, and the construction of urban infrastructure. Interactions between local residents and outsiders also enriched the city's cultural configuration and identity. Thus, this study provides a comprehensive and in-depth picture of how Padang has transformed over time as a result of a long, complex historical process influenced by various internal and external dynamics.

Abstract

Abu Sahl Masihi is a physician, philosopher, mathematician, and famous astronomer of the first half of the 11th century AD. Some scientists have written that Abu Sahl was the master of Avicenna. This study aims to introduce him by using the most important medical theories and works of Abu Sahl Masihi. This library study has been carried out among the most important medical works of Abu Sahl Masihi. Common searches were performed on valid databases and papers. Abu Sahl did not agree with the detailed description of the treatment issues. He focused on the scientific and theoretical part of medicine including General basics and principles of prevention. In his medical works, Abu Sahl has explained the theoretical part in order and simply and the therapeutic part briefly. He has rejected other physicians' opinions that considered menstrual bleeding to be fetal food and thus ending it during menopause as a reason for termination of pregnancy and said that such blood that the body repels cannot be the source of fetal food. He considered the healthy blood of the mother's body as the source of fetal food. Like Aristotle, Abu Sahl has regarded the heart as the life force center, innate heat, and vital spirit. He also had a significant view of the heart structure and the vessels connected to it. We can introduce Abu Sahl as one of the pioneers of the theory of the beginning of digestion of food through the mouth due to being impregnated with saliva by the enzymes in the secretions of the digestive system. Despite the importance of Abu Sahl’s works, his writings have been less considered. It seems that more research on the noteworthy ideas of this great scientist is needed by scholars and researchers.
