Abstract

This writing focused on “The Author’s Arrangements of Events in Moyes’s Me Before You (2012).” This writing is aimed to analyze the causal relationships of those events in Me Before You. The theory applied for analyzing the problem is the theory of arrangement of event, well known as plot taken from William Kenney. The method which is used in this research consist of three steps. Those are data source, data collection, data analysis, and presenting data. The data source is taken from Moyes’s Me Before You. The data are collected by using observation method then it is analyzed descriptively based on the theoretical concept and presented by using informal method. Based on the result of the data analysis, it can be stated that the author’ s arrangement of events ( plot) in Me Before You consists of three parts, those are: beginning structure, middle structure, and the end structure. The beginning structure consist of exposition of the character and setting. The middle structure consist of social conflict, complication and climax. Finally, the end structure of this novel, the author tells us about the main character (William Traynor) decided to die of suicide way.

Abstract

[Title: Tipong Tawar Mantra in the Tradition of Agricultural Ceremony of Dayak Paser as a Projection of Community Life] Mantra as one of the genre of oral literature, in its time used by society archipelago as the answer to handle life problems. Mantra in a tradition of society that its trace has been found nowadays is a manifestation of the efforts and ways of community groups in understanding and explaining the reality of the environment. Tipong Tawar mantra is one of the spells that developed in the Dayak tribe Paser East Kalimantan. This mantra is used in Dayak Paser traditional agricultural ceremony. The purpose of this research was to understand the values of the function of the Tipong Tawar mantra in the tradition of Dayak agricultural ceremony of Paser as the life projection of Dayak people in East Kalimantan. The type of research used in this study was qualitative. This research used descriptive method and ethnographic approach. Data collection techniques were done through interviewing, recording, and notetaking. The findings showed that the use value or function of mantra in the life of Dayak Paser community is as a projection system of society, as the validity of social norms, as an educational tool, as a justified giver of society or problem-makers.

Abstract

[Title: The Forms of Dutch Action on Pejuang at the Physical Revolution in Bali] This article aims to reveal events about the forms of Dutch action against the soldiers during the period of the physical revolution in Bali. This research is qualitative research. The collection is done by documentation and interview techniques. The data collected is processed and organized for interpretation of the data. Based on research conducted it can be concluded that the physical revolution that occurred in Bali from 1945 - 1950 long enough to be maintained by the soldiers againt the Netherlands. This is because the soldier with the people at that time united. Various tactics or strategies were carried out by the soldiers so the Dutch were very difficult to defeat them. In addition to using military force, the Butch also uses other actions to influence people such as: distributing snacks, cigarettes, coins, batik cloth, and rice. The actions taken by the Dutch to the people either directly or indirectly through his spies. The purpose of doing this is for the people to sympathize with the Dutch.

Abstract

[Title: Cultural Value Orientation of the Seaweed Planters in Developing Ped Village, Nusa Penida District] Human’s cultural value orientation becomes important factor in achieving the purpose. It can be seen from its view ofliving.This research is purposed to get the deep understanding of cultural value orientation seaweed plantersin building of Ped Village, Nusa Penida District. This research used qualitative approach which is supported byquantitative data. The technique of collecting data is done through observation' concern interview, and library research. The data is analyzed throughqualitative descriptive way. According to the empiric data, it shows that the cultural value orientation whichis used by seaweed planters in Ped village, Nusa Penida district in solving theliving problems including of their views to the principal of life, principal of work, principalof time, principal of human, and principal of human's relation with nature. Mostof the principal goes to the improvement. The orientation shows theimportant dynamic for the successful of building in Nusa Penida District.

Abstract

Structure shift is one of the problems in translations. This problem is important to be dealt with because it is the most frequent category occurring at all rank in translation. Besides, in grammar structure shift can occur at all ranks. The discussion about structure shift only covers structure shift in phrase, clause, and sentence level. This research used the translation theory proposed by J.C. Catford (1965). He states that shift is departure from formal correspondence in the process of going form the SL to the TL. He also states that there are two kinds of shift in translating, namely level-shift and category-shift. Category shift means the change of formal structure of the SL, in process of translating into the TL. The data source is taken from four bilingual folklores. Data collecting used observation method and descriptive method was employed in analyzing the data. The findings show that in phrase level structure shift found only in noun and adjective phrase. The shifts in noun phrase are: H PostM PostM into PreM PreM H, H PostM into PreM H, and PreM H PostM Post M, into PreM PreM PreM H. In adjective phrase structure shift is found only one i.e. PreM H into H PostM. The structure shift in clause level is: SC into SVC, SV into SVA, and SV into SVO. In sentence level structure shift occur from simple sentence in SL into simple sentence in TL, simple sentence in SL into complex sentence in TL, complex sentence in SL into simple sentence in TL, and complec sentence in SL into complex sentence in TL.

Abstract

[Title: Turn-Taking in English found in Oxford English Daily Conversation] This research aims at investigating and analyzing the turn-taking in English conversation. The data of this writing were collected from a video entitled Oxford English Daily Conversation. This study was conducted by applying the qualitative method of which the discussion was presented descriptively. The data of this study were obtained by using observation and note taking technique. The result of this study indicates that turn-taking in English conversation can be signaled by intonation, stress of word, and pause. Those signals indicate whether the speaker is taking, holding, or yielding the conversation floor.

Abstract

[Title: The Influence of Language Games on Student’s Speaking Ability] In learning a language, especially English, there are many different methods and strategies offered. One of them is using games. This study aims to describe the influence of language games on student’s speaking ability. The subjects of this study are 19 students of class Z STMIK STIKOM Indonesia.The result shows that the application of language games has a positive and significant influence on student’s speaking ability. It includes the pronunciation, fluency, and accuracy. The attention, response, discipline, and student’s participation also increased. Based on the results of the questionnaire, all students agree that language games is very fun and very motivating students to participate more in every activity in the classroom.

Abstract

[Title: The Roles of Museum Arma and Museum Burung Bali in Empowering the Culture and Local Society] This article aims to identify roles of Museum Arma and Museum Burung Bali in empowering the culture and local society and to interpret its meaning. The research model is qualitative research. The data collection were done by observation technique, deep interview and documentation, and the data analysis were done inductively. The result shows two ways in empowering the culture and local society. Museum Arma empowers them by museum integrated management model and living museum. Museum Burung Bali empowers them by employing local artist to make collection, souvenirs and traditional Balinese dance performances. The process can be interpreted as local cultural response towards global culture, the deconstructive strategy towards inversion from outside to inside, and the capitalization towards local culture. The conclusion is both museums have roles in empowering the culture and local society towards certain strategies reflexing the meaning of cultural response, local culture improvement, and cultural capitalization.

Abstract

This research was aimed at describing errors of using Indonesian in foreign learners’ writings and understanding causing factors of those errors. This research applied qualitative-descriptive approach method. The data were sixteen Indonesian writings written by foreign learners. The findings of this study reveal that there are such linguistic errors related to spelling, such as: errors in capitalization, error in writing affixed and root words, error in writing numbers, error in using punctuations, and error in writing borrowed word; related to morphology, such as: error in using the root, error in morphophonemic process, and error in using affixes; related to syntax, such as: errors in phrase structure and errors in sentence structure; and related to lexicon, such as: the use of pleonastic words, errors in word choice, and the use of unnecessary interrogative words. Moreover, the causing factors of those errors are linguistic and non-linguistic factors. Linguistic factors can be classified into three factors, they are interlingual factor, intralingual factor, and the daily use of Indonesian. Meanwhile, non-linguistic factors can be classified into two factors, they are imperfect language learning and learner’s community environment.

Abstract

[Title: Text of Commercial Advertisement on Men’s Perfume] This research aims at identifying the text of commercial advertisement on men’s perfume because the text has its own typically, so the text can be distinguished from the other written text. The problem analyzed in this research are how the lexicogrammatical (transitivity, mood, theme) of commercial advertisement on men’s perfume? How the situational context of commercial advertisement on men’s perfume? The theories used in this study consist of theory Linguistic Functional Systemic by Halliday. This research only reaches a few aspect of LSF. Meanwhile some other elements such as expression, logico-semantic and metaphor are not yet reviewed. This study is also limited on commercial advertisement on men’s perfume which is obtained from the printed media. For the next research commercial advertisement on electronic media should be reviewed in the terms of phonology.
