Abstract

One example of self-medication issues is the differing treatment needs between neuropathic pain (requiring non-analgesic adjuvant medications) and dysmenorrhea (susceptibility to the risk of NSAID side effects due to excessive doses). This study aimed to analyze a comprehensive profile of the knowledge of the Kuanyar Village community regarding the use of analgesics for neuropathic pain and dysmenorrhea. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design through a cross-sectional survey. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire to calculate respondents' knowledge scores, drawn through a purposive sampling technique. The results showed were predominantly female (52%), with 41.2% aged 21-35 years, 60% having a high school education, 35% being self-employed, 45% earning between 1 million and 3 million rupiah, and 42.5% being involved in community organizations. The level of knowledge fell into three categories before the education: poor and sufficient same about (30%) and good (40%). After the education through printed media, the level of knowledge changed sharply, with the poor level of knowledge decreasing sharply, as did the sufficient and good categories, each at 6% and 94%, respectively. This was supported by the analysis results using the Wilcoxon test with a significance value of 0.000 <0.05.

Abstract

Following a stroke, elderly individuals often experience increased dependence on others, resulting in reduced independence in performing activities of daily living (ADL). Consequently, post-stroke care requires substantial family involvement and support. This study aimed to examine the effect of family support on the level of daily activities among elderly patients after non-hemorrhagic stroke at Puskesmas Lubuk Buaya Padang. This research was conducted within the fields of geriatrics (Internal Medicine) and neurology in November 2023. An observational study with a cross-sectional design was employed, utilizing secondary data obtained from questionnaires and medical records. A purposive sampling technique was applied, and a total of 30 elderly respondents were included in the analysis. Univariate analysis was presented as frequency distributions, while bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test. The results demonstrated that the majority of respondents received high levels of family support (83.3%), while the remaining participants received moderate levels of support (16.7%). In addition, most elderly patients exhibited good levels of daily activity (86.6%), whereas 13.3% demonstrated moderate activity levels. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between family support and the level of daily activities among elderly patients after non-hemorrhagic stroke (p = 0.01). In conclusion, elderly patients with non-hemorrhagic stroke at Puskesmas Lubuk Buaya Padang generally receive high family support, which is significantly associated with better performance of daily activities.

Abstract

The concept of lifelong learning requires medical students to continuously read and update their medical knowledge, which inevitably increases the use of electronic devices such as computers, tablets, and smartphones. Prolonged use of these devices, along with other close-distance visual habits, elevates the risk of radiation absorption by the eyes. The radiation generates heat on the ocular surface, leading to excessive tear evaporation and consequently increasing the risk of dry eye syndrome. Digital screen exposure for long durations (≥4 hours/day) has been associated with a 70.8% increase in the severity of dry eye syndrome, and such exposure is strongly linked to the occurrence of this condition due to the accumulation of radiation energy absorbed by the eyes during electronic device use. This study aimed to determine the effect of digital screen exposure duration on the incidence of dry eye syndrome among medical students at Baiturrahmah University, Class of 2022. An analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design was employed, using primary data collected from 67 respondents. Univariate analysis was presented as frequency distributions, while bivariate analysis was conducted using Fisher’s Exact Test with a Monte Carlo approach. The results showed that 51 students (76.1%) were categorized as having high digital screen exposure, while 32 students (47.8%) experienced severe dry eye syndrome and 21 students (31.3%) had moderate dry eye syndrome. Statistical analysis demonstrated a significant effect of digital screen exposure duration on the incidence of dry eye syndrome among medical students, with a p-value of 0.006 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, prolonged digital screen exposure significantly influences the incidence of dry eye syndrome among medical students at Baiturrahmah University, Class of 2022.

Abstract

Gastrointestinal diseases represent a significant global health burden and require complex management. Current assessments of probiotic efficacy often rely on subjective patient reports, which can be potentially biased. This review aims to explore the potential of molecular biomarkers to provide objective measures of therapeutic response. A narrative review was conducted through PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases. The literature was screened using the PICO framework, focusing on gastrointestinal diseases, probiotic interventions, and molecular biomarker outcomes. Probiotic therapy effectively modulates the gut-brain axis and restores microbiota homeostasis. Specific biomarkers such as fecal calprotectin (inflammation), malondialdehyde (oxidative stress), and zonulin and occludin (barrier integrity) have been shown to be robust indicators for patient monitoring. Changes in these biomarkers significantly correlate with improvements in clinical symptoms, such as pain reduction and normalization of stool consistency. The integration of molecular biomarkers provides an objective, evidence-based framework for evaluating the efficacy of probiotic therapy, supporting the transition to precision medicine in gastroenterology.

Abstract

Digitizing healthcare services through online registration is a crucial strategy for reducing waiting times and queues. This study aims to evaluate outpatient satisfaction with the use of the online registration application at RSI Siti Rahmah Padang. Using a descriptive observational design with a cross-sectional approach, data were collected from 85 samples through a simple random sampling technique from June to October 2024. The research instrument was a questionnaire measuring service quality and satisfaction levels. The results showed that the majority of respondents were in the productive age group (26-35 years), female (67.1%), and had a bachelor's degree (47.1%). 84.7% of respondents assessed the service quality as good, and 82.4% expressed satisfaction with the system. These findings confirm that the effectiveness of the hospital management information system (SIMRS) is positively correlated with patient experience, although ongoing education is still needed to minimize manual registration.
