Abstract

This study uses Mohammed Abed Al-Jabiri's framework of Arab reason critique to critically analyze the epistemological construction of kufr (disbelief) in M. Quraish Shihab's Tafsir Al-Misbah. This study examines the hermeneutical techniques and epistemological justifications that underlie Shihab's interpretation of kufr-related verses using a qualitative library research methodology. The results show that Shihab's interpretation dialectically shifts toward Burhani epistemology, which is marked by logical and moral reasoning, even if it is based on Bayani epistemology, which is focused on textual authority and linguistic analysis. His inclusive, contextual interpretation that combines social plurality with religious purity is one way that this metamorphosis is demonstrated. By illustrating the potential epistemological growth within Islamic reasoning, the research theoretically advances Qur'anic hermeneutics. Practically, it advances Islamic by suggesting curriculum reform based on epistemological plurality. The study highlights how tolerance, pluralism, and religious moderation are encouraged in contemporary Islamic  when kufr is understood within an open, critical, and contextual framework. In order to create inclusive and transformational pedagogical models in Muslim al institutions, it is imperative that Bayani and Burhani epistemologies be integrated.

Abstract

The research is based on the problem of understanding role models in Islamic education which is often treated in a homogeneous and value-neutral manner. This article aims to integrate the concept of prophetic exemplary with social cognitive theory to explain how the observational learning process and modeling of kiai shapes the santri's vision of life. Using a qualitative-conceptual approach with a theoretical-reflective analysis method through a review of literature sources. Conceptually, the kiai’s exemplary grounded in prophetic ethics and actualized in daily interactions, emerges as a transformative model of living that shapes santri’s worldview and conduct, reinforced by the pesantren environment that supports the continuous internalization of values. This modelling directly influences the santri's future orientation in three aspects: spirituality, social responsibility, and life planning. The study concludes that the prophetic exemplary played by the kiai within the pesantren subculture is a form of character development and future orientation formation that is relevant to the needs of contemporary Islamic education. Theoretically, this study extends Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory by contextualizing it within Islamic culture and pesantren subculture. Practically, it suggests the development of character education and collaborative policies to strengthen the formative role of pesantren.

Abstract

This article discusses faith-based female leadership within Aisyiyah, a long-standing autonomous organization under Muhammadiyah actively engaged in religion, education, health, economy, environment, and social welfare. Aisyiyah practices a distinctive and contextually grounded leadership model firmly rooted in religious values, community participation, and grassroots empowerment. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with thematic analysis, drawing on data from internal documentation, activity reports, and findings from FGD and interviews with regional leaders. The results show that Aisyiyah has successfully integrated leadership structures from the central level to the village level, involving thematic councils in education, preaching, cadre development, economy, health, social welfare, law, culture, and environment, all of these led by women. This cross-council strategy fosters effective collaboration, addresses the challenge of leadership regeneration, and strengthens women’s contributions to local development. The findings also affirm that organizational forums function as reporting platforms, deliberative spaces for vision strengthening, policy evaluation, sustainable cadre development, and participatory communication. By showcasing leadership practices rooted in Islamic values and women’s empowerment within a modern organizational context, this article contributes significantly to the discourse on Islamic women’s organizations, organizational communication, civil society governance, and gender mainstreaming at the community level.

Abstract

Memorizing the Qur’an is not merely a cognitive activity but also a psychological and spiritual process that requires strong mental endurance and self-confidence. In many Islamic boarding schools, students often face difficulties in maintaining consistency and achieving memorization targets, indicating that psychological factors play a crucial role in tahfiz success. This study aims to examine the influence of Adversity Quotient (AQ) and Self-Efficacy (SE) on students’ Qur’an memorization ability, both partially and simultaneously. The research employed a quantitative approach using an ex post facto correlational design. Data were collected from 157 students selected through proportional random sampling from three Islamic boarding schools in East Kalimantan. The instruments consisted of AQ and SE questionnaires based on Likert scales and a Qur’an memorization performance test assessed through tasmi’ sessions. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression after passing normality, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity tests. The results indicate that AQ and SE simultaneously have a significant effect on students’ Qur’an memorization ability (F = 82.125, p < 0.05). Partially, both variables show positive and significant influences, with Adversity Quotient (β = 1.106) exerting a stronger effect than Self-Efficacy (β = 0.546). These findings demonstrate that psychological endurance and self-belief are key determinants of success in Qur’an memorization. The study implies that tahfiz education should not only focus on memorization techniques but also systematically integrate psychological resilience and confidence-building strategies to enhance students’ academic and spiritual achievement.

Abstract

This study is in the discourse of Islamic education and religious psychology, focusing on factors that influence the internalization of religious values in the madrasah environment. The main objective of this article is to analyze and test the partial and simultaneous effects of Teacher Role Models (X1), Student Religious Motivation (X2), and Islamic Spiritual Activities (X3) on Student Religiousness Levels (Y) at MAN 1 Bandung Regency. The research method used was a quantitative approach with multiple regression analysis techniques. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to a sample of 207 eleventh-grade students. Based on the testing, the three independent variables were partially proven to have a positive and significant influence on the Level of Religiosity (Teacher Role Models Sig.=0.002; Religious Motivation Sig.=0.000; Islamic Spiritual Activities Sig.=0.000). Simultaneously, Teacher Exemplarity, Religious Motivation, and Islamic Spiritual Activities contributed 63.8% to the dependent variable (Sig. = 0.000). The most prominent research finding is that Student Religious Motivation is the most dominant predictor with the highest standardized Beta value (beta = 0.525), indicating that the students' internal spiritual motivation is stronger than the influence of teachers or school programs. This paper contributes to confirming theories of religiosity while also contributing a perspective of influence hierarchy, emphasizing that madrasah strategies must focus on strengthening students' spiritual motivation. The results of this study are important as a basis for formulating madrasah policies that shift the focus from merely delivering material to building intrinsic religious awareness.

Abstract

Pesantren is a traditional Islamic educational institution currently facing significant pressure from globalization and modernization, which disrupt conventional values. This study aims to analyze the strategies employed by pesantren in preserving Islamic educational traditions while examining the process of shaping students' (santri) social identity amidst dynamic social changes. This research utilized a descriptive qualitative approach within Creswell’s framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with leaders (Kyai) and teachers, participatory observation within the pesantren environment, and documentation of curriculum transitions. The results reveal that pesantren implement a hybrid strategy by maintaining kitab kuning (classical texts) learning and the sorogan and bandongan systems as the primary spiritual foundation. Adaptation to social change is achieved through the integration of the national curriculum, digital skills training, and strengthening santri entrepreneurship. The Kyai plays a central role as a charismatic authority figure who balances authentic traditional values with the necessity of modern innovation. The social identity of santri is formed through the internalization of sincerity, simplicity, and independence, practiced collectively in daily life. The study concludes that pesantren demonstrate high resilience in maintaining their Islamic identity despite structural adjustments. The implications of this research highlight the importance of value-based education models as a reference for developing other Islamic educational institutions in facing global challenges without losing their cultural and spiritual roots.

Abstract

This study explores a turath-based model for Islamic education policy analysis through a case study at MTs Mazroatul Huda Karanganyar, Demak. The study is motivated by the growing concern over moral degradation among students in the digital era and the urgent need to strengthen value-based Islamic education. Although classical Islamic texts (turath) have historically played a central role in shaping students' moral and spiritual character, their integration into contemporary educational policy and learning practices remains underexplored. Therefore, this research aims to analyze the instructional strategies used in teaching turath texts, identify the challenges encountered in the learning process, and formulate practical solutions for strengthening the internalization of aqidah and akhlak values among students. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with teachers and school leaders, and supporting documentation. The findings indicate that the integration of traditional learning methods, particularly sorogan and bandongan, with modern pedagogical approaches can effectively support the internalization of Islamic values among students. However, several challenges were identified, including limited Arabic language proficiency, students' learning motivation, and restricted instructional time. To address these issues, the institution implemented several strategies, including teacher professional development, interactive learning methods, and stronger collaboration with parents. This study highlights the importance of a holistic learning model supported by continuous evaluation in developing Islamic education that is both relevant and responsive to contemporary challenges. The findings contribute to the development of a conceptual framework for integrating turath-based learning into Islamic education policy and practice.

Abstract

The rapid transformation of the labor market in the digital era has significantly influenced how young generations interpret work. As digital natives, Generation Z demonstrates distinct work orientations shaped by technological advancement, flexibility, and personal fulfillment. Understanding the meaning of work among Generation Z is essential, particularly in relation to strengthening character education as a foundation for future human resources development. This study aims to analyse how Generation Z in Surakarta interprets the meaning of work and to examine its implications for character education. This research employed a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation as data collection techniques. Informants were selected through purposive sampling to ensure relevance to the research focus. Data were analysed through thematic interpretation to identify patterns related to work orientation and value construction. The findings reveal that Generation Z predominantly interprets work as a calling rather than merely a job or career path. Work is perceived as an expression of personal interest, passion, and self-actualization. Consequently, they tend to avoid rigid and long-term employment structures that restrict flexibility and creativity. The study further identifies three major implications for character education: enhancing students’ capacity for reflective career decision-making, strengthening their ability to differentiate between needs and desires, and fostering responsibility and commitment in task completion. These findings underline the importance of integrating work-meaning perspectives into character education to prepare Generation Z for adaptive and value-driven professional engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the process of constructing santri's religious understanding of religious moderation in the context of Islamic boarding school education. Departing from the phenomenon of increasing religious polarization in Indonesia, Islamic boarding schools are positioned as strategic institutions in strengthening religious moderation. This study uses a social constructivism paradigm with an interpretive qualitative approach through a case study at the Al-Ikhlas Sedayulawas Brondong Lamongan Islamic Boarding School. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, focus group discussions (FGD), and document analysis, then analyzed using Miles and Huberman's interactive model with triangulation techniques to ensure data validity. The results show that santri's understanding of religious moderation is constructed through four intertwined dimensions, namely: (1) the cognitive-epistemological dimension, through the study of classical texts contextualized with the reality of nationality; (2) the socialinteractional dimension, through the example set by the kiai, dialogical learning patterns, and horizontal interactions among santri; (3) the cultural-institutional dimension, through rules, traditions, and pesantren culture that shape the habitus of moderation; and (4) the reflectiveagency dimension, which shows the active role of santri in reflecting on, negotiating, and internalizing the values of religious moderation. These findings confirm that students' understanding of moderation is not formed linearly through the transfer of knowledge alone, but through a dialectical and multidimensional process that involves daily experiences in pesantren life.

Abstract

In the context of Indonesia's ethnically, culturally, and religiously pluralistic society, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) play a strategic role as religious educational institutions and agents of social integration. The focus of this study is to identify the Islamic values that form the basis for the formation of the social character of Islamic boarding school students (santri) and to examine their internalization strategies in daily life. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with kiai, ustadz, and students, and documentation analysis. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the dominant Islamic values at the Al Hidayah Kudus Islamic Boarding School are ta'dib (manners), tawasuth (moderation), tasamuh (tolerance), and ukhuwwah (brotherhood), which function as an effective moral and social system in building harmony in the multicultural student environment. Internalization of these values is carried out through three main strategies: the exemplary behavior of kiai and ustadz, socio-religious habits, and strengthening the pesantren culture. The synergy of these three strategies fosters the inclusive, moderate, and empathetic character of students, while strengthening social cohesion among them. This study concludes that Islamic values serve not only as theological teachings but also as social mechanisms capable of integrating diversity into harmony. These findings affirm the role of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) as a relevant model of Islamic education in strengthening social cohesion in Indonesia's pluralistic society.
