Abstract

This study explores the pragmatic phenomena of presupposition and entailment in Molly Wright’s TED Talk, “How Every Child Can Thrive by Five.” Despite her young age, Wright employs advanced pragmatic strategies typically found in adult discourse. Using a qualitative case study approach, the speech was transcribed and analyzed with reference to frameworks by Stephen Levinson and Louise Cummings. The analysis identifies various types of presupposition existential, factive, lexical, structural, counterfactual, and non-factiv ussed to create shared assumptions and enhance message clarity. Entailment is employed to build logical connections and subtly guide audience interpretation. These devices contribute to the speech’s persuasive appeal, emotional resonance, and communicative effectiveness. Rather than directly instructing, Wright fosters reflection by embedding assumptions and cause-effect structures that reduce cognitive load and promote engagement. The findings underscore the strategic use of implicit meaning in persuasive discourse, illustrating that effective communication depends not on age but on the intentional use of language. This research highlights children's potential in formal speech settings and the power of pragmatics in shaping public understanding.

Abstract

The childhood phase is a critical stage for early literacy development, particularly in fostering beginning writing skills. This study aims to determine the effect of Internet of Things (IoT)-based kinetic sand media on the early writing skills of children aged 4–5 years at Annur Bastari Pekanbaru Islamic Kindergarten. The media used is a transparent container filled with kinetic sand, equipped with a pressure sensor and a small speaker. When a child writes letters in the sand, the sensor responds to hand movements and provides automatic feedback in the form of lights and sounds corresponding to the letters touched, creating an engaging and enjoyable learning environment. A quantitative approach with an experimental method was employed using a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design, in which one group of 21 children in Group A received a pretest, treatment, and posttest. Data were analyzed using a t-test and normalized gain to measure the effectiveness of the media in improving early writing skills. The results showed a significant improvement, with the average achievement increasing from 33.13% in the pretest to 81.56% in the posttest. The t-test results indicated a significance value of 0.000 0.05 and a t-count of 18.166 t-table value of 2.086, confirming a significant influence. Prior to treatment, most children were in the Early Developing and Not Yet Developing categories. After using the IoT-based kinetic sand media, their skills improved drastically, with most reaching the Very Well Developing and Developing as Expected categories. This media effectively stimulates early writing skills in a fun and interactive manner, aligning with the technological advancements in early childhood education.

Abstract

The depiction of female liberation in mainstream media has emerged as a critical focus within feminist discourse. This article examines how Sabrina Carpenter's music video "Feather" represents women's defiance against patriarchal oppression through radical feminist theory and Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method to analyze particular visual scenes and symbols, including religious imagery (church altars, coffins, and crosses), outfit selections (black bridal dress, pink sporty outfit), gestures, facial expressions, and narrative irony (e.g., scenes of male catcallers being hit by a truck), in order explain themes of female autonomy. The signs are examined through the lenses of denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings indicate that “Feather” converts patriarchal religious and cultural symbols into instruments of emancipation and critiques societal conventions related to gender, authority, and female visibility in public spaces. This research highlights that pop media, when critically analyzed, can function as a platform for feminist resistance and ideological transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of academic service management on student satisfaction levels in higher education. Using a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis, the study revealed that the quality of academic services is a key factor in shaping students' learning experiences. The results indicate that the implementation of digitalized services based on an integrated information system increases efficiency and transparency, in accordance with the principles of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Furthermore, the proactive role of academic advisors in academic guidance and consistent communication through official channels also contribute to increased student satisfaction. Other findings identify the importance of continuous evaluation and improvement (Continuous Quality Improvement/CQI) based on student feedback, such as the development of a helpdesk and staff training. This study concludes that higher education institutions need to strengthen academic services through technology-based approaches, increased academic advisor capacity, and integrated communication systems. The practical implication is the need for policies oriented toward student-centered service to improve the quality of education holistically.

Abstract

Islamic education in the modern era is increasingly challenged to remain relevant amidst rapid technological advancement, globalization, and the dominance of secular knowledge. In response, there is a growing need to integrate general scientific knowledge with Islamic values to create a holistic educational framework. This article explores the development strategy of Islamic education programs that combine scientific approaches with religious and moral principles to construct a comprehensive, value-based learning system. Using a qualitative descriptive method, this study employs literature review and document analysis to explore various models and practices of integrative education. The documents analyzed include the official Muhammadiyah curriculum, teaching guidelines from the Muhammadiyah Council for Primary and Secondary Education, and academic literature related to the integration of science and Islamic values. The findings reveal that the integration of science and Islamic values not only enriches the learning experience but also significantly contributes to the formation of students’ character, ethical awareness, and critical thinking. It fosters a balanced mindset that harmonizes spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions. Consequently, integrative Islamic education programs are essential for preparing a generation that is not only intellectually competent but also morally grounded, culturally aware, and ready to address the multidimensional challenges of the global era.

Abstract

The phenomenon of klithih in Yogyakarta has shifted in meaning from a neutral activity of wandering aimlessly to acts of random street violence committed by adolescents. This behavior not only disrupts public safety but also reflects an underlying identity crisis experienced by youth. According to Erik Erikson’s psychosocial development theory, adolescence is marked by the stage of identity vs. role confusion, a critical period for identity formation. Failure to navigate this stage successfully may lead to deviant behaviors. This study aims to understand adolescent involvement in klithih as a manifestation of unsuccessful identity development. Using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological perspective, the study explores psychosocial dynamics, social environmental influences, and the construction of meaning related to the self-identity of klithih perpetrators. The findings indicate that klithih serves as an expression of identity confusion, exacerbated by weak social support, a strong need for recognition, and peer group solidarity. These insights highlight the importance of psychosocial-based interventions and the reinforcement of family and educational roles in supporting adolescents’ identity formation processes.

Abstract

Flashcards are learning media in the form of double-sided cards that contain images and words. The objective of this research is to prove whether the use of flashcards can increase vocabulary of the seventh-grade students of SMPK GPID Sumbersari. This research used a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: experimental and control groups. The population consisted of two seventh grade classes. The data were collected through vocabulary test, which was administered twice as pre-test and post-test. Because the data were not normally distributed, the data were analyzed using the Mann- Whitney U test through SPSS version 24. The results showed that the difference between the post-test scores of the control and experimental classes differences significantly from 67 to 88. The Mann-Whitney test showed that both the experimental and control classes had a significant improvement (Z = -2.102, p = 0.036). It indicates that the research hypothesis is accepted. Thus, the use of flashcards can increase vocabulary of the seventh-grade students of SMPK GPID Sumbersari.

Abstract

This study examines the approach taken by madrasah ibtidaiyah principals to enhance teacher discipline through the use of managerial oversight. To create a consistent culture of discipline in the classroom, managerial supervision is crucial. There is still a disconnect between the academic notions of supervision and their practical application, especially at madrasahs in the Pidie region. A qualitative descriptive methodology was used in this study, which included document analysis, observations, and interviews. The results show that, in spite of obstacles including a lack of professional development and environmental difficulties, principals use a variety of supervisory techniques to deal with teacher discipline concerns. To improve teacher discipline in primary Islamic schools, the study finds that contextualized policies and focused training are essential for bolstering management supervision.
