Abstract

This study analyzes the metafunctions of language (ideational, interpersonal, and textual) in Akeelah's discourse in the film Akeelah and the Bee (2006) and how they relate to her personal growth in an educational context. A gap was found, namely the lack of research that pays attention to the social and personal functions of language in the learning process. This is where the novelty of this study lies, the Systemic Functional Linguistics approach is applied in depth in the analysis of film media as a representation of language learning. Using a qualitative approach and Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday), 20 discourses were purposively selected for analysis. The findings show that the ideational metafunction reflects her thoughts and identity development. Akeelah's use of language serves as both a mirror and a driver of her transformation as a learner. This insight contributes to English language teaching by emphasizing the role of language in supporting motivation and identity.

Abstract

Social studies learning in junior high school requires the development of students' critical thinking skills, but eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Semarang still show low activity and difficulty in in-depth analysis. This study aims to describe students' critical thinking skills and analyze the efforts of social studies teachers through the Project Based Learning (PjBL) model. This qualitative case study design research involved a population of social studies teachers, vice principals of curriculum, and eighth-grade students, with a purposive sample of one teacher, one vice principal, and five representative students. Instruments included semi-structured interviews, observation, and documentation; data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model with triangulation. The results showed that students' critical thinking skills were at a developing stage, encouraged by PjBL through problem identification, group discussions, and presentations, as well as teacher efforts such as visual media and limited facility management. PjBL was effective as a constructivist facilitation, although limited in generalization.

Abstract

Oral fluency is a vital competency for Business Administration students in global settings. However, the synergy between discourse markers (DMs) and fluencemes in vocational assessments remains under-researched. This qualitative study explicitly addresses: (1) what types of DMs and fluencemes appear in students' presentations; (2) what functional purposes these markers serve; and (3) how they influence message clarity and coherence. Analyzing nine speech transcripts from Semarang State Polytechnic via Crible’s (2018) DisFrEn framework , findings reveal that DMs and fluencemes act as strategic cognitive resources rather than mere errors. Students employ tactics like "Structural Anchoring" to maintain coherence under high cognitive load. Most participants fall into the "Effortful but Communicative" category. Consequently, vocational curricula should prioritize oral discourse management strategies over native-like accuracy to foster professional pragmatic competence in workplace communication

Abstract

The study of illocutionary speech acts is important for understanding implicit meaning in literary texts. However, previous studies on illocutionary speech acts in literary texts tend to emphasize classification rather than contextual interpretation of meaning. This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary speech acts in Guy de Maupassant’s short story “A Family.” The data source was the short story, and the unit of analysis consisted of 22-character utterances selected from the dialogues. A qualitative descriptive method was applied using Searle’s theory of illocutionary acts. The findings show three types of illocutionary acts: assertive, directive, and expressive. Assertive acts were the most dominant, functioning to convey information, reflection, and social evaluation. This dominance indicates that the story emphasizes reflective meaning and indirect social criticism.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) over the past decade has driven significant transformations in educational practices, particularly through the implementation of personalized learning. This article aims to comprehensively examine the utilization of AI in supporting adaptive, learner-centered personalized learning and to identify the opportunities and challenges associated with its implementation. This study adopts a literature review approach by analyzing relevant peer-reviewed journal articles retrieved from Google Scholar published between 2015 and 2025. The findings indicate that the application of Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Adaptive Learning Management Systems, and Generative AI enables the dynamic adaptation of learning content, pacing, and learning pathways based on individual learner profiles, thereby enhancing learner engagement, learning efficiency, and academic achievement. Furthermore, the role of educators is shifting from content delivery toward facilitation and mentoring of the learning process. Nevertheless, the integration of AI in education also presents critical challenges, including data privacy concerns, algorithmic bias, AI hallucinations, and the risk of depersonalization in learning environments. This article underscores the importance of adopting a human-centered and ethical approach to AI integration to ensure that personalized learning is implemented effectively, equitably, and sustainably.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT are increasingly integrated into EFL academic writing; however, empirical evidence regarding students’ perceptions, challenges, and ethical considerations remains limited. This study examines EFL university students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT in academic writing, focusing on perceived usefulness, challenges, and ethical awareness. Employing a case study design, data were collected through close-ended and open-ended questionnaires administered to EFL students. The findings indicate that students perceive ChatGPT as supportive for idea generation, grammatical accuracy, text organization, and time efficiency. Nevertheless, challenges related to the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated information were identified, highlighting the need for critical evaluation. In addition, students reported agreement with ethical considerations, particularly regarding plagiarism awareness and the view that ChatGPT should function as a supplementary tool rather than a primary source. Overall, the findings suggest that ChatGPT can support EFL academic writing when used critically and ethically.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze grammatical errors produced by Indonesian EFL university students in their English-speaking assignments. The data were obtained from students’ speaking videos collected from mid-term and final tests at Universitas Pendidikan Nasional, Denpasar, Bali. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study employed error analysis based on the surface strategy taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen, which classifies errors into omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. A total of 50 grammatical errors were identified, with misformation errors occurring most frequently, followed by omission, addition, and misordering errors. The findings indicate that students experience difficulties in selecting appropriate grammatical forms during spontaneous oral production, particularly in verb forms, subject–verb agreement, comparative constructions, and sentence structure. These errors reflect learners’ developing interlanguage and their tendency to prioritize fluency over grammatical accuracy in spoken communication. The study suggests that explicit grammar instruction integrated into speaking activities and systematic corrective feedback may help improve students’ grammatical accuracy in English speaking performance.
