Abstract

Characterization of the main characters is an essential element in establishing an emotional connection between the reader and the storyline in a novel. Me Before You by Jojo Moyes presents profound characterization through its two main characters, Louisa Clark and Will Traynor, who have contrasting backgrounds and motivations. This study aims to analyze how the characterization of these two characters contributes to the structure and quality of the novel’s plot. The research employs a qualitative approach with text analysis, encompassing character identification, psychological analysis of characters, and exploration of narrative structure. Data were collected through in-depth reading and note-taking of key elements related to character development and their interaction with the plot. The findings reveal that the characterization of Louisa and Will plays a crucial role in shaping the story’s dynamics. Louisa evolves from an insecure individual into a more independent and courageous person, while Will experiences deep internal conflict regarding control over his life. Will's firm adherence to his decision creates intense emotional tension in the plot, reinforcing the central themes of freedom of choice, sacrifice, and the meaning of life. Additionally, validation through literature review and discussions with academics supports the idea that characterization in this novel aligns with concepts in contemporary literature. The study concludes that complex and realistic characterization not only drives the plot but also adds depth to the themes and messages conveyed. Through strong character depiction, Me Before You successfully engages readers emotionally and offers a profound reflection on life choices and their consequences in human existence.

Abstract

The study of cognitive stylistics has become increasingly significant in understanding how readers engage with literary texts, particularly poetry. Despite existing research, there remains a gap in examining mental simulation and conceptual blending specifically in William Wordsworth’s The Solitary Reaper. This study aims to explore these cognitive processes and their impact on emotional engagement with the poem. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive analytical approach, we conducted a close reading of the text, supported by relevant literature on cognitive stylistics. Our findings indicate that Wordsworth’s vivid imagery and emotional resonance facilitate mental simulation, allowing readers to connect deeply with the themes of solitude and beauty. Additionally, conceptual blending merges various emotional and contextual elements, enhancing the poem’s interpretative richness. This research highlights the role of cognitive stylistics in appreciating poetry and how language activates cognitive and emotional responses.

Data collection techniques included tests, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed using a one-sample t-test. The results of the t-test showed that t_count = 4.30 ≥ t_table = 1.761, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. This finding suggests that ecoprint activities using the Belida fish pattern from South Sumatra have a significant effect on the fine motor development of children aged 5–6 years at RA Jamiyatul Qurro KH. Abstract

This research aimed to explore high school students’ challenges in an international conference. The research employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. The participants in this research were four high school students who had presented in one international conference. The researcher used purposive sampling to select the appropriate participants based on the criteria. To obtain data, the researcher interviewed the participants. In analyzing the data, the researcher used thematic analysis. The results of this research indicated that high school students experienced some challenges when presenting their paper in an international conference that was held in Malaysia, which were divided into three themes: language barriers (lack of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation), psychological issues (lack of confidence and anxiety), and performance (lack of preparation). Despite the comprehensive exploration of the topic, this study has some limitations. Firstly, the research solely focused on the experiences of high school students at international conferences. Future studies could explore their experiences in national forums for comparison. Secondly, the study included a relatively small sample size of only four participants. Including more participants in future research could lead to a more nuanced understanding of the challenges faced.

Abstract

Kendrick Lamar's 2017 song "PRIDE." from his album DAMN. goes with themes of internal chaos, pride, and regrets. Using a cognitive stylistic method, this study investigates how Lamar's metaphors influence listeners' perceptions and emotional comprehension. It answers two key queries: (1) Which schemas or mental models are activated in the brains of the listeners? and (2) How are complicated feelings like pride and shame expressed through Lamar's metaphors? Drawing on the song's official lyrics, the analysis is based on Schema Theory (Anderson, 1977) and Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Lakoff Johnson, 1980). By examining recurrent patterns of imagery, word choice, and narrative structures that correspond with experiences that are both cognitively and culturally recognizable, schemas may be found in the lyrics. For example, Lamar's use of chronological changes (“I was born like this”) and geographical oppositions (“sitting in silence”) to illustrate internal struggle activates schemas linked to memory, self-examination, and moral dualism. Metaphors like "empathy as sacrifice" and "pride as death" appeal to common conceptual frameworks in which empathy is linked to vulnerability or redemption and pride to destruction or collapse. Listeners are able to emotionally connect with the abstract problems Lamar offers because these metaphorical expressions suggest larger schemas regarding identity, morality, relationships, and spiritual tension.

Abstract

Global demographic shifts have made classrooms increasingly multicultural, demanding adequate multicultural competence from educators. This article aims to examine the urgency of teachers' multicultural competence in addressing the challenges of diversity and its implications for the quality of educational services. Using an integrative literature review method, this article analyzes 38 empirical studies and theoretical sources published between 2020 and 2025, sourced from databases such as Scopus, ERIC, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. Thematic analysis was employed to identify key patterns and themes related to multicultural competence and educational service quality. The findings indicate that multicultural competence plays an important role in supporting various dimensions of educational service quality. The article also emphasizes the need to strengthen teachers' capacities in responding to multiculturalism to create inclusive, responsive, and high-quality educational services. These findings offer strategic implications for education policy development, teacher training, and the evaluation of diversity-based educational service quality.
