Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates university students' perceptions and challenges related to the use of Kahoot! in English language learning. The study focuses on understanding how students perceive Kahoot! as a learning tool and the main challenges they face while using it. A total of 90 participants, consisting of 20 students from IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram and 70 from UIN Mataram, were purposively selected based on their experience with Kahoot in English courses. Data were collected through closed and open-ended questionnaires to provide a comprehensive understanding of their experiences. The findings indicate overwhelmingly positive perceptions of Kahoot!, with participants expressing enthusiasm for its engaging format and its effectiveness in enhancing understanding of English language concepts. Qualitative responses highlighted how Kahoot! makes learning enjoyable and motivating, while the competitive aspect was seen as a valuable component of the learning experience. However, some challenges were identified, primarily related to internet connectivity and the pacing of questions. Despite these challenges, the overall sentiment suggests that the benefits of using Kahoot! in higher education contexts significantly outweigh the difficulties encountered. This study contributes to the growing body of research on gamification in language learning, emphasizing the potential of interactive tools like Kahoot! to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in English language education. Abstract

This study explores the significant role of English language usage in the production practices of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMES) in Indonesia, particularly focusing on how this linguistic choice reflects social identity within a globalized context. By examining prevalent English terms in product naming—such as "Ready Stock," "Fresh Milk," and "Mango Iced Tea"—the research reveals a deliberate strategy among MSMES producers to position their offerings as modern and appealing to contemporary consumers, especially younger demographics. Interviews with MSMES stakeholders indicate a strong belief that incorporating English enhances product appeal and improves production quantity, underscoring the language's perceived association with quality and sophistication. This dynamic aligns with sociolinguistic theories regarding language as a marker of social identity, where familiarity with English signifies higher social status and aspirational lifestyles. The findings illustrate how MSMES navigates cultural negotiation, blending local heritage with global trends to construct a distinct identity that resonates with both local and international markets. Ultimately, this study highlights the interplay between language, culture, and identity, demonstrating how English usage serves not only as a marketing tool but also as a mechanism for fostering innovation and cultural exchange within Indonesia's culinary landscape. By situating their products within a global narrative, MSMES producers affirm their roles as adaptive and forward-thinking members of an increasingly interconnected world.

Abstract

The English language skills are also a determinant factor in the process of global knowledge exchange in various fields, including health, science, and technology. The connection between student needs and inadequate teaching approaches emphasizes the urgency of reforming English curricula in higher education. Identifying students’ needs in learning English is an important step in designing more effective and relevant curriculum and teaching methods. At STIK Bina Husada Palembang, English learning discusses the integration of four basic English language skills, namely speaking, listening, reading, and writing including aspects of grammar and vocabulary into the scope of nursing services and work both in clinical/community practice and in classroom and/or laboratory learning. In English language learning, need analysis helps educators design a curriculum that is appropriate to students' learning needs. By understanding these needs, teachers can develop relevant materials and target the language skills that are most useful to students in a particular context, such as academic, business, or everyday English. In this study, 150 students of the Nursing Science study program at STIK Bina Husada Palembang participated in the 2024/2025 academic year, but only 149 students filled out the Google form completely. The instrument used is a questionnaire that focuses on personal information, English language proficiency, and English language goals. The result showed that English language programs have been introduced early, and many university students still face challenges in communicating and understanding English, especially in public speaking, academic essay writing, and comprehending scientific articles. Low confidence and limited vocabulary are the main obstacles.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the participatory training organized by PKBM Maharani Sumedang and its impact on livelihood change and community empowerment. The training was specifically designed to restore the self-reliance of affected community members by equipping them with the skills to make shredded fish, which utilizes local natural resources. Using a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, this study aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of the training process and outcomes. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, questionnaires and documentation to obtain comprehensive views from participants, trainers and community leaders. Triangulation was applied to ensure data reliability, while data were analyzed through reduction, display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The results showed that the training used a participatory approach in accordance with the needs, skill levels and resource potential of the local community. This approach not only actively involved participants but also tailored the training to realistic economic opportunities in the area. The training fosters self-reliance, allowing community members to use their newly acquired skills to create alternative livelihoods. By utilizing available fish resources, residents can now generate a sustainable income that complements the natural environment in the region. This initiative highlights a successful model for community-based training programs, demonstrating how participatory training can drive livelihood change and long-term resilience for communities affected by large-scale infrastructure projects.

Abstract

Abstracts offer a concise summary of a study, helping readers determine whether to read the full article, as they serve as the initial point of access to knowledge and are among the first freely available "mini-texts" online (Huckin, 2001). This study aimed to compare the rhetorical structures and their occurrence in abstracts from IT journals and Language, Literature, and Education (LLE) journals, as well as to assess how well writers adhere to abstract writing guidelines. The study analyzed 60 abstracts—30 from each journal type—using Hyland’s (2000) model. The analysis revealed 19 different move structures, with six abstracts following the same patterns and 13 displaying varied structures. The most common move structures were M1-M2-M3-M4-M5 and M1-M2-M3-M4. There were instances of merging and repetition in moves 2 and 3, and the average awareness of using all move structures was higher in LLE (93%) compared to IT abstracts (87%). Hyland's (2000) five-move model provides a framework for maintaining consistency in abstract organization by emphasizing the significance and order of each move. The study found that certain structures included repetitive or cyclical moves, indicating the importance of offering clear textual guidance on the correct sequence.
