Abstract

This study explored specific physical conditions as determinants of cataloguers’ job satisfaction in federal and state universities’ libraries in South-South zone of Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. Two objectives with its corresponding research questions and hypotheses guided the study. 109 cataloguers from 6 federal and 6 state universities libraries in the South-South zone of Nigeria made up the target population for the study. Stratified and total census sampling techniques were used to select the sample size of the study comprising 57 and 52 cataloguers from the federal and state universities’ libraries respectively. A self-structured, self-administered instrument entitled specific physical conditions for cataloguers job satisfaction questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.82 was used for data collection. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to answer the research questions and test the hypotheses respectively. Findings revealed that while workspace cleanliness met their expectations, both lighting and air quality standards were inadequate. Furthermore, these cataloguers highlighted that furniture comfortability and temperature settings also had a significant impact on job satisfaction. As such, it can be concluded that physical conditions within university libraries in South-South zone of Nigeria have a direct effect on the job satisfaction of cataloguers. Hence, it was recommended that periodic assessment of the universities’ libraries facilities should be carried out and resources must be allocated for infrastructure development to improve the existing physical conditions in the universities’ libraries.

Abstract

Social work is widely considered one of the noblest professions which allow people to make significant changes to the society and is a worthy profession from humanitarian perspective. These individuals and groups have made significant impact across different areas but there are still many areas where social workers need to intervene in a more intensive as well as extensive way. Social service is one of the cornerstone and essential need of in the modern times to implement reforms, carry out utilitarian procedures and empower millions of marginalized groups and make them resourceful enough not just only manage their own lives but also to empower others and maintain the cycle of empowerment. Social workers can mediate in the agricultural process on two crucial levels- first it can familiarize the local people with the new technologies, available subsidies and facilities either by the state or by institutions and organizations, secondly, it can use the firsthand knowledge of the condition of the farmers to understand the need of the hour and convey the same to the policy makers. We have seen how many farmer’s agitations and movements have been successfully organized in our country on a large scale, but still two major lacunae in this whole process has limited the impact of these movements on a much greater scale- one, there is a dearth of larger social consciousness among the masses regarding the problem of farmers in general and these movements in specific. Social workers need to take this burden on their heads so as to ensure that not only the information is disseminated smoothly and effectively but also a larger audience can be built who not only can be aware of the condition of farmers but can also empathize with it, thus providing the base of mobilization of these groups for future causes.

Abstract

Land is the place where people of customary law communities live, and land also provides livelihood for them. Law Number 5 of 1960 concerning Basic Regulations on Agrarian Principles (UUPA), agrarian law that applies to earth, water, and space is customary law where the joints of the law come from the local customary law community, as long as it does not conflict with national and state interests based on national unity and Indonesian socialism. This research study is normative juridical as the main approach, considering that the discussion is based on laws and legal principles that apply in the issue of customary or customary land registration procedures. Customary land rights are authorities, which according to customary law are owned by customary law communities over certain areas that are the environment of their citizens. This position of authority allows communities to benefit from natural resources, including land, within the area for their survival. The Land Registry is called Recht Cadaster. Conversely, for land rights that are subject to customary law, land registration is not carried out so that it does not produce a certificate, but a proof of payment of tax on land, for example Girik, and even if a land registration is carried out for land rights subject to customary law, this is known as Fiscaal Cadaster. Although customary land is not the object of land registration, based on the provisions of the Minister of Agrarian State/Head of the National Land Agency Number 5 of 1999, Article 4 paragraphs (1) and (2) stipulate that customary land can be controlled by individuals and legal entities by registering as land rights if desired by the right holder, namely citizens of customary law communities according to the provisions of the applicable customary law.
