Abstract

For design of marine propeller, the energy supply from marine engine to the propeller should be converted to thrust force with minimum losses. Furthermore, the unwanted vibration and cavitation due to the overlooking a detail calculation of the propeller should be prohibited for increasing the fuel efficiency and life-span of the propeller. In the last few decades, most of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) focusing their work on ship component industry in Central Java Province Indonesia provide the marine propeller to the ship manufacturer and ship repairmen in some shipyards in northern part of Central Java port. The design of the propeller is never been observed and optimized. The aim of the present work is to redesign the installed propeller on a wooden fishing boat with the new optimized design using B-Series propeller theory approach. The reverse engineering method uses three-dimensional scanner to obtain the geometrical data of the installed ship propeller. The new optimized propeller design is obtained from free software calculation based on the boat and engine specification. The comparison shows that the new optimized propeller design has a wider blade and larger pitch and increases 20% of the open water efficiency of the propeller performance at lower engine rotation. Abstract

Fishing port plays a vital role in providing fish raw materials (IBB) required for fish processing industries (IPI). The planning and development of IPI at Tasik Agung Rembang Coastal Fishing Port (PPP) rely on information regarding IBB supplies, however little data is available to support the decision. The purpose of this study was to investigate the origin of the IBB in fulfilling IPI demand for Pindang production and assess the IBB actual supplies (type, number, quality). A survey on the availability of IBB was conducted by involving various stakeholders including port officers, fishers, and IPI related entrepreneurs. Data collection consisted of both demand and supplies of IBB, which incorporate types, volume, and quality of fish. The results showed that the total demand for IBB was 824.8 ton/month and consisted of 9 species. However, the existing supplies of IBB only cover 59.5% of it. Abstract

A fishing operation is a dangerous and high risk activity. Stability of the vessel plays an important role in performing safely and successfully fishing operations. A brand new 30 GT purse seiner, production of a traditional shipyard in Batang Regency, experienced 15o heel after its launch. This condition potentially affects the stability of the vessel. The purpose of the study is to analyze the vessel stability and improve existing stability by adding outriggers. Research was conducted in two phases, data collection in the research site and stability analysed using a naval architecture software. The vessel stability was analyzed in six loading scenarios following the fishing operation process, subsequently the stability was compared against IMO standard. Results show that with the existing design, the vessel does not meet IMO criteria for the most applied scenarios. Next step, outriggers were added in both sides of the vessel model, as an effort to improve its stability. Accordingly, it is revealed that outriggers addition is scientifically proven to improve the stability of the studied vessel. As this research merely focused on the stability improvement, further analysis regarding maneuverability is required given a purse seiner operates encircled fishing gear. Abstract

Information regarding the diversity of bycatch from blue swimming crab fishing operations is important in ecosystem-based management and assessment for Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of crab fisheries in Southeast Sulawesi and Indonesia. However, data limitation becomes major challenges. This study aims to specify the types of bycatch caught from blue swimming crab fishing in Lasongko and Kendari Bay Southeast Sulawesi. This research was conducted in March to September 2019. Data was collected from trap and bottom gillnet fishing by using a purposive sampling method on a monthly basis. Bycatch was categorized into two groups, namely economically valuable and discarded, according to the local fishers’ perception. Information was presented both spatially and temporally. The results show that bycatch consists of 66 species including 41 economically valuable and 26 discarded species. Indices of diversity, evenness and dominance of fish were also discussed to describe the ecological conditions. Accordingly, this bycatch composition is able to support the management and assessment of MSC certification of crab fisheries in Southeast Sulawesi. Keywords: bycatch, fish diversity, blue swimming crab fisheries, Southeast Sulawesi.

Abstract

Red mud crab (Scylla olivacea) is an economic commodity that is traded into foreign countries such as China, Malaysia, and Singapore so that fishing activities are carried out intensively. Therefore, we need scientific information about the status of red mud crab fishery stock. Information about the natural mortality, fishing mortality, and the exploitation level of crabs can be used as the basis for crab fisheries management. The study was conducted for 2 (two) years, February to October 2017, and March to December 2018 using the survey method. The results showed that 36% of the crabs were caught below the 120 mm size as regulated in Regulation of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries No. 12 Year 2020. The carapace width of the first capture (CWc) is smaller than the size of the carapace width of the first gonad maturity (CWm). This shows that the crab has been captured before the first gonad maturity (CWc < CWm). The growth rate (K) is 0.65 per year with fishing mortality (F) higher than natural mortality (M). Exploitation level (E) 0.70 which indicates that the status fisheries of red mud crab in Mimika have been overexploited. Efforts need to be done by the Regional Government in collaboration with local community leaders in providing counseling and information about the size of red mud crabs that can be caught and reduce efforts to use crabs by as much as 40% of what is currently done. Abstract

Fiberglass aid vessels KM. Nelayan 2018 with a size of ≤5 gross tonnage not all can be directly used by local fishermen. Cilacap Regency received 7 aid vessel and it had to renovate. The renovation related to technical design factors, while it is still not yet be reviewed. This study aims to identify and compare differences in technical design factors between the aid vessel and the local vessel. Identification method by direct observation, including measurements of the main dimensions, shape of the hull and bow, general arrangement and working area. The identification data is compared to get the differences. Observation results show that the aid vessel have a ratio of L/D and L/B between local vessel values they are 8,96 from 7,72-9,20 and 13,33 from 12,92-14,11, but have the smallest value at B/D which is 1,49 from 1,51-1,71. The Hulls shape have same type, they are "u-bottom". The shape of the bow and the stern also have the same shape, they are raked bow and transom stern, but height of aid vessel bows is 1,9 m, it is higher than the average of local vessels which only 1,34 m. The height of the engine mount at the stern is also too high at 56 cm, while the average on the local vessel is 53 cm. The general arrangement and working area almost same. The vessel feature, safety and security factors of fishermen need to be improved in aid vessel. Keywords: feature, fiberglass fishing vessel, technical factor design

Abstract

The small pelagic resources in the waters of Kendari (FMA 714) that are dominant are mackerel scad (Decapterus macarellus) and Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta). Fishing in these waters uses a mini purse seine, with the production of 2 species of fish has reached 38.2% of the total allowed catch FMA 714. Because of intensive use, management needed to preserve resources. The purpose of this study is to determine the decent size based on a comparison of length of the first capture (Lc) and the length of first mature (Lm), and prediction of spawning season. Data collection was conducted by researchers and assisted by enumerators monthly. The results showed that the size of the mackerel scad in between 17.5 - 30.5 cm FL (n = 3207 tails). The size of the Indian mackerel found between 18.5 - 26.5 cm FL (n = 2556). The length at first captured of both species was larger than the size at first matured (Lm> Lc) so that the decent size is 23 cm FL for mackerel scad and 22 cm FL for Indian mackerel. The prediction of the spawning season in May-August can be the basis for closing the area during the spawning season. Keywords: : mackerel scad, Indian mackerel, mini purse seine, decent size, FMA 714

Abstract

This study investigates the economies of scale and efficiency of small-scale capture fisheries, as well as to know how the socio-economic variable influencing the small-scale capture fisheries business in the Kurau village, Central Bangka district. The approach used is a quantitative method by applying multiple linear regression models to adopt the Cobb-Douglas production function. The study found that the scale-economies condition in the small-scale fisheries is decreasing return to scale. We also found the results of allocative efficiency in this small-scale fisheries business are relatively inefficient. Other findings of model estimation indicated that the variables of capital, labor, and fishing distance have a positive and significant effect, while the variables of age, experience, and education level of fishermen have no significant effect on small-scale fisheries production. The main factor that is an obstacle for local fishermen is technology, therefore technology assistance and support from the government are needed as a policy to improve small-scale capture fisheries business and fishermen welfare.
