Abstract

The increasing integration of digital technology in higher education underscores the importance of speech politeness among Generation Z, particularly in online academic interactions. This study aims to explore the levels and characteristics of speech politeness exhibited by Generation Z students in digital contexts. A descriptive statistical method was used to analyze data collected through a Google Forms survey, involving 424 students from the Faculty of Economics—263 from Management, 145 from Accounting, and 16 from Agribusiness—who were enrolled in an Indonesian language course. The results indicated that 53.13% of students demonstrated awareness of speech politeness in the planning stage, 51.9% during implementation, and 56.9% in evaluation. These findings suggest a relatively balanced application of speech politeness across different stages of digital communication. Qualitative responses further revealed that students view speech politeness as beneficial for enhancing knowledge, skills, and attitudes in alignment with curricular goals. The study concludes that there is a harmonious relationship between theoretical understanding and practical application of speech politeness among Generation Z in the digital era.

Abstract

This study aimed to discuss the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in English Language Teaching (ELT) in higher education based on a systematic review of several relevant articles. The articles analyzed include studies regarding teachers’ knowledge and experiences regarding the use of ICT in English language teaching, as well as the challenges and potential associated with implementing these technologies in the classroom. The findings show that although many teachers, both novice and experienced, show high confidence in using ICT tools, difficulties in pedagogical application and lack of practical training are the main barriers. Some other inhibiting factors are a lack of access to technology, limited infrastructure, and resistance to change among more experienced educators. This article suggests a more holistic approach in preparing educators for ICT integration, including improved professional training focusing on developing pedagogical skills in ICT use and stronger institutional support. Although these challenges are significant, the potential of ICT in improving student engagement and learning outcomes suggests that effective technology integration can significantly impact English language teaching in higher education.

Abstract

Teaching English in Islamic boarding schools or traditional Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia faces significant challenges due to technological developments. In recent years, technology has changed how people learn, communicate, and interact. This study aims to investigate how English teachers teach English in the digital era when Islamic boarding school regulations prohibit students from bringing gadgets. Qualitative study was used in this study by using interview and observations as data collection technique. The findings of this study revealed that the educational pattern at pesantren fulfilled the characteristics of a modern pesantren with formal and informal education system. English teachers do not refuse the existence of technology but do not use it as the primary method of learning in the classroom. The learning method is still based on teacher-centered and lecture-based learning methods. Some challenges in teaching English are traditional learning methods, monotonous classroom atmosphere, lack of teacher competence, and lack of teaching sources. The conclusion emphasizes the need for teacher training, improved teaching methods, and teaching sources.

Test anxiety, on the other hand, was reported to be the least important element. This study suggested that the implementation of online learning may influence the students’ language learning anxiety, and this was further examined along with recommendations for future research.

Abstract

The analysis shows that NaturalReader is an AI-powered free text-to-speech service online which helps teachers/lecturers to teach English. In teaching English, especially listening to TOEFL, an English lecturer in ITB AAS Indonesia uses face-to-face learning combined with Zoom and Live YouTube streaming. The lecturer uses NaturalReader Text-to-Speech (TTS) in teaching listening TOEFL including Part A (short dialogue), Part B (long dialogue), and Part C (monologue). The lecturer opens the NaturalReader application, then clicks the + icon to input the words, phrases, or sentences that she/he wants to listen to the audio with their pronunciation. NaturalReader offers female and male voices and variation accents for both free and paid users. This software is capable of converting text into sound in multiple languages, including English with diverse accents, such as British or American. In teaching listening TOEFL, pronunciation especially accent cannot be separated from listening. In listening, the presence of several accents, the speakers’ speed, and the speaker’s intonation from native speakers on listening tests may threaten test fairness. By using the NaturalReader app, the students can learn to listen to how the word/phrase/sentence is pronounced differently with different accents and voices as they want. It means that the students study listening also pronunciation. When students understand correct pronunciation, students will understand English listening easier because they will learn to identify the sounds directly from native speakers.
