Abstract

Introduction: Smoking has caused a heavy economic burden around the world. In Indonesia, in the South Sulawesi Region, smoking has become a habit. The economic losses caused by smoking have reached unreasonable limits, coupled with the increase in smoking in various regions of Indonesia, affecting the social life of the community. One of the efforts made by the Indonesian government is a policy related to Non-Smoking Areas (KTR). Methods: This study used qualitative and quantitative methods with a sample of 400 respondents from the total population of Palopo City. The qualitative method uses rapid ethnography to directly observe the habits of the people in the KTR. The quantitative method uses a survey of economic loss and community compliance with regional regulations and smoking habits in Palopo City. Results: The results show that the people of Palopo City are able to smoke an average of 14 cigarettes a day (1.70 USD), which is 420 cigarettes a month (51.06 USD), and are able to spend 5110 cigarettes (18637.99 USD) a year for one smoker. These costs are spent only on purchasing cigarettes and do not include the costs that must be paid by smokers to overcome health problems caused by smoking. This study also examines smokers' habits and their adherence to the KTR policy. Conclusion: The costs incurred for smoking in Palopo City are very high. Cost estimates can be used to evaluate cigarette tax rates and other tobacco-related policies. The habit and need for smoking are one of the factors contributing to the high costs incurred each year to buy cigarettes. The smoking habit which has a high risk of health problems and poor compliance is a challenge for the government and policy enforcers to pay more attention to this problem. To enhance the effectiveness of tobacco control, the government needs to increase cigarette taxes, strengthen the enforcement of Smoke-Free Areas (KTR), and expand public education programs on the dangers of smoking.

Abstract

Backround: A Sharia hospital is a healthcare institution that applies Islamic principles in its management and services. Objective: This study aims to analyze the implementation of Sharia principles in healthcare services at PKU Muhammadiyah Mamajang Hospital. Methods: Using a qualitative approach, this  research was conducted through in-depth interviews and observations of Sharia service practices. Result: The findings indicate that the employment contract for healthcare workers follows the wakalah contract, while the contract with patients is carried out through the informed consent mechanism. The hospital has implemented a clinical pathway and Clinical Practice Guidelines (PPK), yet challenges remain in applying Sharia principles, such as inconsistencies in patient examinations based on gender and limitations in supporting facilities, such as Sharia-compliant breastfeeding attire. Sharia supervision is still conducted internally without a dedicated Sharia Supervisory Board (DPS). Conclusion: Therefore, strengthening internal policies, enhancing healthcare worker training, and optimizing   Sharia-based facilities are necessary to improve the quality and consistency of services in accordance with Sharia     principles.

Abstract

Background: Employee engagement is a crucial factor influencing workforce performance and sustainability in hospitals. Low employee engagement may increase turnover intention, leading to high recruitment costs, declining service quality, and reduced patient satisfaction. Objective: This study aims to analyze the influence of employee engagement on turnover intention among staff at Yapika General Hospital in 2025. Method: A quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach was applied, involving 131 respondents selected through proportional sampling. Data were collected using the Gallup Q12 questionnaire with a 5-point Likert scale, and analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with simple linear regression. Result: The findings show that the majority of respondents were not engaged (91.6%), with most having a moderate level of turnover intention (67.9%). Regression analysis revealed a significant effect of employee engagement on turnover intention (t = -10.987; p = 0.000). Conclusion: Furthermore, all four engagement dimensions (basic needs, management support, teamwork, and growth) showed significant negative effects on turnover intention. In conclusion, higher employee engagement reduces staff’s intention to resign. Therefore, enhancing engagement through fulfilling basic needs, managerial support, teamwork, and career development opportunities is essential to reduce turnover intention and maintain hospital service quality.

Abstract

Background: Service quality is a key determinant of patient satisfaction and hospital performance. Understanding the gap between patient expectations and perceptions is essential for strengthening healthcare delivery. Objective: This study aimed to assess healthcare service quality at Mega Buana Hospital Palopo, Indonesia, using SERVQUAL dimensions and to analyze their influence on patient satisfaction. Method: A cross sectional survey was carried out from July to August 2025 with 143 patients recruited through accidental sampling. Data were collected using the SERVQUAL questionnaire comprising 22 indicators across five dimensions: tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. Descriptive statistics were applied to evaluate gaps between expectations and perceptions, while multiple regression analysis tested the effect of each dimension on patient satisfaction. Results: The findings revealed negative gaps across all dimensions, suggesting that perceived services did not meet expectations. The largest gap was observed in reliability (–0.58), followed by tangibles (–0.40), empathy (–0.33), responsiveness (–0.29), and assurance (–0.22). Regression results showed that responsiveness (β = 0.34, p = 0.002) and tangibles (β = 0.29, p = 0.011) significantly predicted patient satisfaction, while reliability, assurance, and empathy were not significant. The model explained 58% of the variance in patient satisfaction (R² = 0.58, F = 24.31, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Service quality at Mega Buana Hospital Palopo needs improvement, especially in reliability. Enhancing responsiveness and tangible aspects such as promptness, communication, and facility conditions will be critical to improve patient satisfaction and hospital performance.

Abstract

Central Sulawesi lies within a seismically active region, particularly along subduction zones and fault lines that extend across both marine and terrestrial domains. This area has experienced several major earthquakes, resulting in substantial physical destruction, human casualties, and profound socio-economic repercussions. Consequently, targeted educational initiatives are essential to enhance community resilience and preparedness. Among various approaches, simulation-based training stands out as an effective strategy, offering participants hands-on experience in managing emergency scenarios. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of simulation-based education on earthquake disaster preparedness among adolescents.Employing a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group approach, the research involved 45 participants in the intervention group and 45 in the control group. Data analysis utilized the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for within-group comparisons and the Mann-Whitney U test for between-group differences, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. The Mann-Whitney U test on pre-intervention data yielded a p-value of 0.267 (p > 0.05), indicating no significant difference in baseline earthquake preparedness between the groups. In contrast, post-intervention analysis revealed a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), demonstrating a statistically significant divergence in preparedness levels between the intervention and control groups. These findings suggest that simulation-based education positively influences earthquake preparedness among adolescents at SMP Negeri 7 Palu. It is anticipated that such interventions will bolster students' knowledge, attitudes, and practical behaviors toward earthquake mitigation, thereby improving their capacity for self-rescue during seismic events.
