Abstract

The need to evaluate the status of qualitative research, particularly in childhood education, is required. Four questions were answered and three hypotheses were tested. A mixed-method approach design was adopted in this research. The population of the study comprised all childhood education researchers from all the teacher training institutions in Kwara State, Nigeria. 58 researchers were purposively selected to participate in the study. A questionnaire and interview were used to collect the necessary data for the study. The outcome of the study revealed that the qualitative research method is rarely adopted for research related to childhood education. Also, time, secrecy, participants’ unwillingness, cost implication among others were identified as dilemmas to conducting qualitative research in childhood education in the State. The quality of qualitative research conducted in childhood education is on average. The ratio of quantitative research as against qualitative research conducted by childhood educators was found to be 1:8. In other words, there was a significant difference in the number of quantitative and qualitative research conducted. In addition, gender and academic qualification had no significant influence on childhood educators’ use of qualitative research methods. Thus, it was concluded that the status of qualitative research in childhood education in Kwara State, Nigeria is ranked low. Among the recommendations made are training and re-training of teacher trainers of childhood education on the benefits and how to use qualitative research methods.

Abstract

Shell and tube heat exchangers are one of the most widely used types of heat exchangers in industry. The low cost of manufacture and use is one of the reasons this heat exchanger is widely used. The purpose of this research is to design a shell and tube heat exchanger (two-pass) type for application in the production of magnetite particles on an industrial scale. To design a heat exchanger, the method used is mathematical calculations using more than 20 equations that are used which are derived based on the influence of dimensional and fluid specifications. In the production of magnetite particles, two heat exchangers are used, namely the reaction process and the crystallization process. The results of this study indicate the effectiveness of the two heat exchangers designed to have a high enough value and exceed 70%. This high effectiveness value indicates that both heat exchangers have good performance. Therefore, this design has the potential to be applied to the magnetite particle synthesis process on an industrial scale.

Abstract

This study examined the Effect of the Multimedia Instructional Approach (MIA) on the English writing performance of pre-service Technical teachers in Southwestern Nigeria. The study adopted a quasi-experimental design of the pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design to compare the performance of students. The following research instruments were adopted for the study: English Writing Performance Tests (EWPT) set A and B as well as Multimedia Instructional Software Package. Mean, standard deviation, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) were used for data analysis. The findings of the study revealed that MIA, was effective for teaching English language writing and there is no significant difference between males and females in the English writing performance of the pre-service technical teachers taught through MIA. This study concluded that MIA for English writing is an important variable because it better predicts students’ writing performance in the English Language than the conventional method of teaching. The study, therefore, recommended that teachers of the English language should deploy the use of multimedia technology for instructional delivery in the classroom as it better predicts the students’ academic performance.

Abstract

This paper aims to discuss rape, one of the problems the pandemic caused in Nigeria from an educational perspective. To do justice to this, the internet, newspaper, personal communications, and journals were reviewed. From the sources, it was observed that: (i) within five months in Nigeria, over seven hundred cases were recorded (official); (ii) the forum of state governors declared a state of emergency on rape, (iii) NGOs and other stakeholders staged serial protests, (iv) the rape victims ranged between three years and 80 years old, (v) many deaths were reported during rapes, (vi) series of the cases were between fathers and their biological daughters,  (vii) many ‘celebrities’ were involved, and so many others. Since this ugly incidence is becoming rampant, many ‘jungle justices are recommended to the government by the stakeholders, which include, castration of the male offenders, live imprisonment, wide publicity of the offenders through national dailies, and death penalties, just to mention a few. This paper recommends that to achieve the goal 5 targets of the SDGs or to eradicate or reduce the incidence of rape in Nigeria, all the stakeholders (men and women, parents, government, NGO, religious leaders, and others) should be ready to sacrifice all at their disposals to fight this menace called rape.
