Abstract

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is an urban development strategy that integrates public transport systems with land-use planning to promote sustainable mobility and reduce reliance on private vehicles. Malaysia has implemented TOD since the early 2000s through projects such as KL Sentral and Tun Razak Exchange, whereas Indonesia began systematic implementation in 2019 with the operation of MRT Jakarta. This study aims to compare TOD implementation in both countries, identify key enabling factors and constraints, and formulate policy recommendations to strengthen sustainable urban planning. Using a qualitative literature-review approach, the research analyzes national policy coherence, multimodal transport integration, private-sector involvement, and socio-economic impacts. The findings show that Malaysia has achieved a more mature TOD ecosystem supported by consistent national policies, strong multimodal connectivity, and significant participation from private developers. In contrast, Indonesia continues to face fragmented regulations, spatial-planning challenges, and housing affordability issues that hinder TOD optimization. The study concludes that Indonesia can benefit from Malaysia’s experience by strengthening national TOD regulations, improving cross-agency coordination, enhancing land-value capture mechanisms, and expanding affordable housing provision to ensure inclusive and sustainable TOD development.

Abstract

Inland water transport safety is an important issue in the context of community mobility and goods transportation. However, inland water transport still faces various challenges in terms of safety. Data shows that accidents on inland water transport still occur frequently. Therefore, the development of a good safety culture among operators and users of inland water transport services is urgently needed. Safety culture is a concept that describes the attitudes, values, and behaviours of individuals and organisations in prioritising safety. Factors that can influence the safety culture of inland water transport crew members are knowledge culture and individual commitment. This study was conducted in Dramaga 16 Ilir, Palembang City, with a sample size of 100 inland water transport crew respondents. The results of the Structural Equation Model analysis concluded that individual knowledge does not significantly influence safety culture. Meanwhile, the factor of individual commitment has a positive and significant influence on the safety culture of inland water transport crews on the Musi River

Abstract

Road traffic fatalities in Indonesia remain a critical public health and transportation challenge, with roadside barrier performance being an underexplored factor in injury severity outcomes. This study examines the relationship between guardrail type and crash fatality risk using a binary logistic regression model. Secondary data from 30 crash events involving guardrail collisions were sourced from investigation reports issued by the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) spanning 2007–2023. Crash outcomes were classified as fatal or non-fatal, while guardrail systems were categorized as rigid or semi-rigid. Logistic regression results yielded an odds ratio of 1.99 for rigid guardrails, indicating that crashes involving rigid barriers carry nearly twice the probability of a fatal outcome compared to semi-rigid systems. Estimated fatality probability was 44.6% for rigid guardrails and 28.8% for semi-rigid guardrails. Risk reduction analysis demonstrated that semi-rigid barriers reduce relative fatality risk by 35.4%, with an absolute risk reduction of 15.8% and a Number Needed to Treat (NNT) of 6. These findings provide quantitative evidence that semi-rigid guardrail systems, through their energy-absorbing deformation capacity, are more consistent with forgiving road design principles. The results establish a technical foundation for evidence-based infrastructure investment and policy decisions aimed at reducing road traffic fatalities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Transportation service quality is essential to ensure optimal performance of infrastructure, facilities, and the benefits delivered to users. Service quality can be evaluated by comparing passenger expectations with the company’s perception, allowing identification of gaps in service delivery. This study conducts a gap analysis by distributing questionnaires to both ferry passengers and service employees to examine differences in their perceptions of service quality. The assessment adopts the SERVQUAL framework, encompassing tangible, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy dimensions. Furthermore, the PZB model and paired t-test method are applied to evaluate discrepancies between expected and perceived services from the passengers’ perspective, as well as to assess service provision, service design standards, company perceptions, and external communication. The analysis focuses on ferry routes in South Sumatra, specifically the Tanjung Api-Api and Tanjung Kalian corridors, where the results indicate that the most significant gap occurs in the tangible dimension. These findings highlight the need for ferry operators to improve service quality, particularly in areas with the largest gaps. This study also provides practical implications for further evaluation and optimization of ferry services, supporting their role as a key mode of transportation in maritime countries such as Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Traffic safety in mountainous regions is influenced by the interaction between infrastructure conditions, traffic exposure, and road user behavior. This study aims to analyze traffic accident characteristics and evaluate the influence of road user perceptions on accident risk on the Makale–Rantepao National Road in Tana Toraja, Indonesia. The study employed an integrated quantitative approach by combining objective historical data and subjective perception data within a single traffic safety framework. Secondary data consisted of traffic accident records from 2022–2025 and traffic exposure indicators, including vehicle ownership and population data from 2021–2024. Primary data were collected through a questionnaire survey involving 110 road users conducted in early 2026. Data analysis was performed using the Accident Equivalent Number (AEN) method, traffic exposure ratio analysis, descriptive statistics, and multiple linear regression. The results indicate that traffic accidents in Tana Toraja fluctuated during the study period, with the highest AEN recorded in 2022 at 815 and the lowest in 2025 at 351. Meanwhile, the vehicle-to-population ratio increased from 0.322 in 2021 to 0.373 in 2024, indicating increasing traffic pressure and exposure risk. Regression analysis demonstrates that road surface conditions, road safety facilities, and road user behavior significantly influence accident risk perception, with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.457. Among the independent variables, road surface condition showed the strongest influence on perceived accident risk. The findings suggest that integrating accident severity indicators, traffic exposure, and road user perceptions provides a more comprehensive understanding of traffic safety conditions in mountainous areas. This study contributes to the development of an integrated traffic safety assessment framework that can support sustainable road safety management and policy formulation in developing regions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze household trip generation in semi-rural areas of North Toraja based on household characteristics and regional transportation conditions. The study was conducted in Pangli and Sa'dan Matallo located along the Rantepao–Sa’dan provincial road corridor. This research employed a quantitative approach using a survey method with 181 household respondents. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive analysis, binary logistic regression, and Chi-Square analysis with the assistance of IBM SPSS Statistics software. The results indicate that vehicle ownership and number of family members significantly influence the probability of household trip generation, with significance values of 0.006 and 0.000, respectively. Meanwhile, household income does not significantly affect household trip generation categories. The Chi-Square analysis shows that travel time has a significant relationship with trip generation categories with a significance value of 0.033, while transportation mode and travel distance do not show significant relationships. In addition, regional transportation characteristics indicate an increase in population and motor vehicle growth in North Toraja Regency from 2021 to 2024, with a coefficient of determination value of , indicating a very strong relationship between population growth and motor vehicle growth. The findings suggest that household trip generation in semi-rural areas is influenced by a combination of household socio-economic characteristics, regional development, and transportation conditions. This study is expected to provide recommendations for regional transportation planning and mobility management in semi-rural areas.
