Abstract

This study is aimed to find out grammatical errors and the sources of errors in students’ recount texts. The subject of this study is the third-grade students of SMAN 22 Jakarta in the academic year 2023/2024 which consists of 23 students. Specifically, their recount texts focused on recounting their vacation activities. From the entire third-grade class of 23 students, 16 students were selected as the study sample using the purposive sampling technique. This study used a qualitative approach to analyze and identify grammatical errors. The analysis was carried out by referring to Dulay, Burt & Krashen’s theory, a surface strategy taxonomy consisting of Omission, Addition, Misformation, and Misordering and the sources of errors based on Ellis’s theory are Interlingual Transfer and Intralingual Transfer. The result of this study showed that the total number of grammatical errors made by the students in their recount texts is 32 errors. Which consist of 4 omission errors, 7 addition errors, 8 misordering erros, and 13 misinformation errors. Accordingly, the most frequent error is misinformation error which corresponds to 13 (40,6%) of the total error. Furthermore, this study also revealed that most of the errors are caused by Intralingual Transfer (30 errors or 94% of the total error). Based on these findings, it concluded that the students had some difficulties in applying English grammar rules in their writings. Therefore, it is suggested to be aware and pay more attention to improve the English teaching and learning process.

Abstract

In contemporary filmmaking, the portrayal of emotions is pivotal, with phatic communication playing a crucial role. Phatic communication, involving verbal interactions aimed at maintaining social relationships rather than conveying information, enhances narrative and character development. This study examines phatic expressions in the animated film "Hotel Transylvania," directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, to uncover the deeper meanings and social significance of these seemingly simple interactions. The analysis reveals that greetings, casual conversations, and social courtesies in the film not only establish and maintain social bonds but also contributing to the film’s charm and authenticity. By exploring phatic communication in "Hotel Transylvania," this research offers insights into sociolinguistics and communication studies, emphasizing the importance of these expressions in storytelling and the functions of phatic expression in social context so that the readers can apply it to enhance their conversations.

Abstract

This study uses a qualitative methodology and literature review strategy to explore various approaches to enhance students' English acquisition as a foreign language. Two distinct teaching approaches are identified: Teaching-Centered Learning and Student-Centered Learning. Effective teaching methods include teacher training, participation in English teacher meetings, creating a stimulating learning atmosphere, implementing differentiated learning, and conducting assessments. To address challenges, educators may adopt a novel approach to teaching English, such as the Merdeka curriculum, which incorporates the unique traits of each student based on their Pancasila profile. This curriculum is closely intertwined with ICT advancements from the Industrial Revolution, enhancing students' motivation and engagement in teaching and learning. Instructors must exhibit a proactive and inventive approach to create a captivating educational experience, fostering student engagement and enjoyment. Digital resources like YouTube, SMART-board, Twitter, and blogs can be utilized in the educational process to improve student involvement and efficiency while adhering to the updated curriculum standards.

Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education has the potential to significantly enhance students' critical thinking skills. This study explores how AI tools can improve critical thinking among students majoring in English Education at X University. Utilizing a mixedmethods approach, the research combines quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to assess the frequency and contexts of AI usage and its impact on critical thinking. Survey results reveal that 64% of respondents use AI tools several times a week, predominantly in educational settings. A smaller percentage of respondents use AI daily (14%), while another 14% use AI rarely, and 7% use it several times a month. Interviews with frequent AI users indicate that AI assists in expanding ideas and providing deeper insights, but its effectiveness depends on the users' ability to ask precise questions and critically interpret AI-generated content. The findings highlight that while AI can significantly aid in developing critical thinking skills through personalized learning experiences and interactive simulations, challenges such as potential biases and the need for foundational understanding persist. Ultimately, this research underscores the importance of thoughtful and critical use of AI in education to foster improved critical thinking skills.
