Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of figurative language in Olivia Rodrigo’s song lyrics as a means of expressing emotion. Using a qualitative approach with a document analysis method, the researcher examines the types of figurative language found in three of Rodrigo’s popular songs: Driver License, Enough for You, and Happier. The analysis reveals five main types of figurative language used: metaphor, imagery, simile, hyperbole, and symbolism. Each of these elements enhances the emotional depth and appeal of the lyrics, creating a strong connection between the singer and the audience. These songs reflect universal emotional experiences such as love, heartbreak, and self-discovery, which are especially relevant to the younger generation. The findings of this study demonstrate that figurative language not only enriches the lyrical aesthetic but also plays a crucial role in building emotional resonance and the cultural appeal of popular music.m.

Abstract

English proficiency plays a critical role in global communication, especially in education and entertainment. One effective method to enhance speaking and pragmatic competence is through the use of English movies. This study aims to analyze speech acts in The Hunger Games movie using the theories of J.L. Austin and John Searle. A qualitative approach was employed to identify and categorize various types of speech acts such as assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative acts. In addition to these classifications, the analysis also considers Austin’s tripartite framework of speech acts: locutionary acts (the literal meaning of utterances), illocutionary acts (the speaker’s intention), and perlocutionary acts (the effect on the listener). The findings revealed that assertive and directive acts were most dominant. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of pragmatics in cinematic dialogue and highlights how language use in movies can aid learners in developing both linguistic and sociocultural competence.

Abstract

In the era of modern education, which is rapidly evolving with technological advancements and new pedagogical approaches, the role of teachers extends beyond merely delivering content. Teachers now serve as facilitators, moderators, and creators of a conducive learning environment. This study aims to explore in depth how teachers can foster a positive classroom culture through effective classroom management strategies. A positive classroom culture supports students’ emotional, social, and academic well-being, fostering mutual respect, a sense of safety, and active student participation in learning. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, observations, and journal data analysis. The findings indicate that successful teachers in building a positive classroom culture prioritize open communication, implement fair and consistent rules, and provide feedback that creates engaging and relevant learning experiences for students. Furthermore, the appropriate use of educational technology enhances positive interactions between teachers and students. Teachers must understand individual student needs, demonstrate empathy and high levels of care, and maintain flexibility to create a pleasant and inclusive classroom climate. Modeling exemplary behavior and positive attitudes in daily practice is essential, as these serve as references for students to emulate good character and ethics. However, several challenges exist, such as students’ diverse backgrounds, limited facilities and infrastructure, and insufficient teacher training in classroom management. These challenges can be addressed through collaboration among teachers, support from schools, and involvement of students’ families. The study concludes that the success of building a positive classroom culture depends on teachers’ commitment to implementing student-centered classroom management principles and their responsiveness to the dynamics of modern learning. Thus, the classroom becomes not only a place for knowledge transfer but also a space that supports students’ personal development. Modern education requires teachers to adapt quickly in designing learning experiences that focus not only on cognitive aspects but also on affective and social dimensions. Therefore, educators must innovate in classroom management practices to ensure a comfortable, safe, enjoyable, and motivating environment for optimal student growth. This study contributes to the development of classroom management theory and practice in Indonesia and serves as a reference for teachers in fulfilling their roles in the ever-evolving landscape of modern education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the errors made by sixth-semester students at Universitas Ma’arif Nahdlatul Ulama (UMNU) Kebumen in writing English procedure texts. It aims to identify the specific linguistic challenges students face in producing clear and effective procedural writing. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research examined ten procedure texts written during an academic writing course. Each text was analyzed to determine the frequency and types of errors. The findings indicate that grammatical errors were the most frequent (40%), followed by syntactical errors (27%), lexical errors (18%), and coherence-related problems (15%). These results suggest that students particularly struggle with constructing grammatically accurate sentences and logically organizing ideas. The study emphasizes the importance of instructional strategies that focus on grammar, vocabulary enrichment, sentence structure, and overall text coherence. The findings are expected to inform more effective pedagogical practices and support EFL students in improving their academic writing proficiency, especially in producing functional texts such as procedures.

Abstract

This research presents an examination of the flouting of conversational maxims in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, featuring Anne Hathaway as the guest. The objectives of this study are to identify which maxims are flouted by both the host and the guest, and to explore the underlying reasons for these violations. This analysis employs a qualitative method, with data sourced from a YouTube video. The primary research instrument consists of a transcript of the dialogue between Jimmy Fallon and Anne Hathaway that includes instances of flouted maxims. To identify and interpret the occurrences of maxim flouting, this study utilizes Grice’s theory of the Cooperative Principle, which comprises four categories of maxims: quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The results of the study demonstrate that the maxim of quantity is the most frequently flouted with (50%) percentage, followed by relevance (29%), manner (14%), and quality (7%). Based on the results, the interaction in those interviews often relies on providing too much information, so the guest will mostly speak. The goal of this flouting is to give a sense of humor to engage the audience's interest in the conversation on this talk show.
