Abstract

This research aims to find out the correlation between student’s self-confident in their speaking skill. This research was conducted at SMP N 8 Satap Tondano. Descriptive quantitative survey was the method used in this research and the instrument to collect data by using a questionnaire. The questionnaire distributed to 20 students. The result of this research showed that, most of the students give positive response to the statements about their reading habits. It can be seen through the their responses in questionnaire. The researcher concluded that the students of class 7,8 and 9 at SMP N 8 Satap Tondano, English Education Department of Universitas Negeri Manado who were the samples in this study like to improving their speaking skill, feel happy, and are also excited when answer the questionairre. It is expected that, this research can present information as reference material for the next researchers and English teachers in providing assistance, motivation to maintain good to improve teaching techniques, in order to increase and enhance their English speaking skills

Abstract

In today's life, lots of people are dealing with mental health problems, from small problems to ones that affect how they act and how others see them. Depression, anxiety, and sadness are something almost everyone goes through, causing problems like trouble sleeping, eating issues, feeling uncomfortable, or losing interest in things they used to enjoy. This study aims to explore mental health issues experienced by the main character, Otto Anderson, in the film "A Man Called Otto". The writer used qualitative research to gather data for this study, focusing on words and dialogue quotations from the film, as well as various supporting sources. Through a psychological approach, the writer examines the mental health issues and related problems depicted in the film, particularly those affecting the main character. The psychological theory used in this research is from Sigmund Freud’s theory which studies The Id, The Ego, and The Superego. The writer also analyzes the cause and effect of mental health in the film and finds the result that there are; Depression, Suicidal Thoughts, Irritability, and Unsocialized.

Abstract

Abstract : The skill in communicating is speaking, speaking is one of the basic skills that a person be able to communicate with others, but there are several problems, namely not everyone can speak well, especially speaking in public or only with people. The aim of this research is to improve skills, namely speaking to students. This research is also classified as classroom action research which is carried out in the form of two cycles. And the subjects involved in this research were 20 students’ of Smp Negeri Satap Buo class VIII. In this research, data collection was carried out using observation, test and interviews. The instruments given by the researchers were speaking ability test and providing observation sheets. The results of this research showed that students gained significant improvement after the researchers introduced several conversations into English languange learning for students’. The students’ pre-test results obtained the lowest score of 55,75 but after the researchers provided treatment through conversation and several examples of making mind mapping to students’. The students’ post-test results obtained the highest score of 68,5. This means that the Application of Mind Mapping method was successful in teaching and learning English for students’.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of English pop songs in enhancing students' listening comprehension. A quantitative method was applied, utilizing a single-group pre-test and post-test design. The study included 20 ninth-grade students from SMP Negeri 2 Tondano as participants. Pre-test and post-test assessments were used to gather data. The findings indicated that incorporating songs can significantly enhance students' English listening comprehension, as demonstrated by the difference in average scores between the pre-test (56.00) and post-test (82.25). Songs were shown to improve vocabulary recognition, contextual understanding, and motivation to learn foreign languages, along with other listening skills. However, the effectiveness of music in language learning is influenced by several factors, such as the alignment of songs with learning objectives, students' proficiency levels, and the teaching approach used by instructors.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a fundamental skill that involves not just hearing words, but actively understanding and interpreting the meaning behind them. It requires focusing attention, retaining information, and making sense of what is heard in real time. This research investigates the application of English Songs to improve students' listening Comprehension. Conducted at SMP Negeri 5 Tondano, this research involved 20 class VII students. Using a quantitative approach, this research used a pre-experimental design with one pre-test and post-test group. Data collection relies on tests, with the same format but different songs for the pre-test and post-test. The results showed significant improvement in listening proficiency, with the average post-test score (89,5) surpassing the pre-test score (33). This underlines the potential of English Songs as a tool to improve students' English listening comprehension

Abstract

This study explored the social acceptance and rejection experienced by the main character in the Stargirl novel. This study aimed to reveal the representation of social acceptance categories that occured towards the main character and also to reveal the form of social rejection experienced by the main character in the novel “Stargirl”. A qualitative descriptive research method was used, incorporating supporting quotes from the novel and other sources. Through a psychological approach, the researcher examined the categories of social acceptance from Hurlock and form of social rejection by Baumeister and Leary. The researcher found the results of the study that in the Stargirl novel, there was evidence of social acceptance in the form of star, accepted, and fringer experienced by the main character. In addition, the researcher found that not only social acceptance, social rejection of the main character Stargirl was found in the form of active, passive, other or verbal, and social or peer rejection.

Abstract

This research is about the effectiveness of podcasts to improve the listening skills of 8th grade students at SMPN 3 Tareran. The objective of this study is to find out the effectiveness of podcasts in improving students’ listening skill at SMPN 3 Tareran. A pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was implemented with 14 students as participants. This research used listening test before and after treatment using podcast media that focused on daily activities. Data were analyzed using a paired samples T-Test on IBM SPSS 30, by contrasting the results of the pre-test and post-test. The mean post-test score (75.0000) was considerably higher than the pre-test score (37.8571), demonstrating that students' listening abilities have significantly improved. The paired sample t-test resulted in a p-value of <0.001, which is under the significance threshold of 0.05, revealed statistically significant difference. Based on these findings, H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted, which confirms that podcasts are a useful resource for enhancing students listening skills by providing accessible and engaging learning materials.

Abstract

Speaking is a crucial language acquisition skill, particularly for students learning English as a foreign language (EFL), where many have trouble with vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the Shadowing Technique can help grade XI students at SMA Negeri 1 Tondano become more proficient speakers. By using this method, the study aims to enhance students' fluency, pronunciation, and vocabulary, all of which will enhance their speaking abilities. To evaluate the efficacy of the shadowing technique, this study employed a pre-test and post-test experimental design with a single group. A speaking exam with an emphasis on vocabulary, grammar, fluency, and pronunciation was used to gather data. With the aid of SPSS, reliability, normality, homogeneity, and t-tests were used to analyze the data. After using the shadowing technique, the students' speaking skills significantly improved, according to the results. With a significant difference (t = -10.591, p < 0.05) in the t-test results, the students' mean score rose from 47.33 on the pretest to 61.17 on the post-test. These results endorse the inclusion of shadowing techniques in language learning curricula and support their use in enhancing speaking abilities, particularly in fluency and pronunciation.

Abstract

The tittle of this research is the Value of Money in Scott Fitzgerald The Great Gatsby , The problem to be discussed is how the uniqueness and peculiarity The Great Gatsby novel , this research used descriptive qualitative methods , because the literary work itself is a description of human life in society , in this case , after analyzing the data , the writer then provided a description about the American dream in the novel , the writer chooses passage or quotes from the novel that are related to the research topic , that indicate the “Value” of money in The Great Gatsby , it is expected to be the reference for those who want to conduct similar studies in the future , and acknowledge the reader about certain issue in a novel that might be found in our daily life
