Abstract

Reflective skill is a component of 21st century learning and one of the main keys to become a professional teacher. However, pre-service teachers often have difficulty in reflecting their teaching and learning. Thus, this study aims to describe the reflective thinking abilities of pre-service English teachers in implementing their teaching practice. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The research subjects in this study were 12 pre-service English teachers. The instruments used were observation of documents and interviews. The results indicate that pre-service English teachers tend to practice four reflective thinking skills that are reflection as retrospective analysis (ability to self-assess), reflection as a problem-solving process (awareness of how one learns), critical self-reflection (developing continuous self-improvement), and reflection on self-confidence. The most dominant reflective skill practiced is reflection as a problem-solving process. Meanwhile, testing internal consistency on problem solution become a difficult aspect to be fulfilled by the pre-service teachers. In brief, it is recommended that pre-service teachers should have more opportunity to practice their reflective thinking skills during the teaching and learning process in order to produce professional graduates who have high competitiveness and ability to face the challenges in the world of education.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover the visual values—regarding interactive meaning—contained in the “My Next Words” English textbook and used at an international primary school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia using Kress and Van Leuween’s (2006) visual complementarity—only focusing on interactive meaning. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were qualitative in the form of pictures in the textbook. The data were collected through a documentation procedure. From the findings, the interactive meaning found is as follows. primarily it uses long shots for most of the distance; second, it exclusively uses oblique views; and third, it shows both background-free and background-filled photographs. This outcome suggests that the pictures presented in this book are appropriate for the target audience, which is youngsters. For children to understand the concepts and messages presented in the textbook, their vision needs to be more distinct and clear. It is recommended that to produce more thorough and complex conclusions, future research should subcategorize the age in greater detail.

Abstract

Currently, technology has been involved in the learning process, especially English language learning. Technology has always been an important part of English teaching and learning. One of type technology that educators like is games.  In learning technology, the term gamification appears that be used in the learning process. Gamification is the integration of game aspects and mechanics into situations that are not inherently game-related, and it has shown considerable potential in increasing motivation, engagement, and educational achievements across diverse domains, such as language learning. Kahoot, Quizziz, and Bamboozle are examples of gamification that can be used in learning English especially to review material after the learning process. In this research, researchers wanted to investigate the students’ perception of using gamification tools Kahoot, Quizziz, and Bamboozle as media review after the English language learning process. This research used a descriptive quantitative method. The method of collecting data used a questionnaire where researchers needed 50 students as a sample to answer the questionnaire. From the research findings and discussion, researchers concluded that the use of gamification Kahoot, Quizziz, and Bamboozle increases students’ motivation and understanding of learning materials. The use of gamification Kahoot, Quizziz, and Bamboozle for material review is needed in English language learning where students can; make students easier to do English assignments during tests; make students more confident to learn English; and provide challenges for students to learn English. Furthermore, researchers also found that Kahoot is the most favorite gamification tool as a review media in English language learning.

Abstract

Student’s diversity and uniqueness should not be the reason for left-behind student in the learning process. Process, content, and product are the main elements of differentiated instruction that bridge the diversity issues in the classroom, including in the process of learning English as a foreign language in Taiwan. Differentiate instruction is believed as the fittest approach that can reach every single student’s profile, uniqueness, readiness, and schemata understanding which is understood as the element of reaching success in the English teaching and learning process. The approach then enhances students’ self-confidence and manages the structural thinking ideas through the variety of activities conducted during the class. The research method was used qualitatively involving English class observation of 22 students which was performed at one of the Junior High Schools in Eastern Taiwan. The research results provided wider information by preparing various media and activities, recognizing students’ competency levels, and activating students’ awareness of the teacher’s instructions.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate pre-service teachers' perceptions of using Grammarly software to help them check their essays' problems. The study considers the widespread use of AI in English language learning, particularly in writing. The research method used in this paper was a quantitative survey. The instrument used was a questionnaire. 36 English Pre-service teachers from two state universities and one private university in Jember were involved in this study. The findings show a positive response based on five aspects of perception: belief, knowledge, feeling, interest, and motivation. Based on the data, 18-24 participants agree, and 2-12 participants strongly agree with the statement. This data means that more than half of the respondents positively perceive using Grammarly software in essay writing. The belief aspect is the highest frequency (65.3% of respondents agree). This data means that students mostly believe that using Grammarly can help them improve their writing skills and solve their writing problems. On the other hand, the motivation aspect received the lowest response, with less than half (48.6%) agreeing. Therefore, this study recommends that English language education programs emphasize the importance of AI in learning, particularly Grammarly.

Abstract

A play in meanings can be found within an internal interaction of a secretive and concealed community. In Surabaya, queer individuals, particularly gay men, employ secret codes within their language as a defensive measure against conservative societal norms. The primary strategy of this coded language involves the selection of specific vocabulary and the nuanced meanings embedded within it. Many MSMs (men who have sex with men) utilize these vocabularies for communication, primarily through online dating apps. This study aims to uncover the registers within the gay community and explore how their meanings correspond with their literal meanings in the English language. The research employs a case study method of qualitative approach and applies Leech’s seven types of meaning theory (1981) for analysis. The findings reveal that gay registers convey connotative, reflected, social, and collocative meanings. Connotative meaning is the most commonly used, followed by reflected, collocative, and social meaning. Connotative meanings are frequently employed because the gay community assigns codes to various concepts based on their real-world references. The study sheds light on how queer communities, particularly MSMs in Surabaya, use coded language as a tool for navigating conservative societal pressures. This highlights the adaptability of marginalized groups in protecting their identities, emphasizing the importance of language as valid form of expression and resistance. Future research could expand to other regions with similar or differing cultural contexts, allowing for comparative analysis of coded language usage among MSMs in various conservative environments and providing a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the method used by Angie Kilbane in translating the SL novel “Negeri 5 Menara” into TL “The Land of Five Towers” and what translation method is most dominantly used using Peter Newmark’s theory. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with content. The research instrument in data collection is tabulation. The data will be analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s theory. This research data is in the form of SL sentences and TL sentences in the novel “The Land of Five Towers”. According to the research findings, Angie Kilbane by Peter Newmark employs word-for-word, literal translation, semantic translation, adaptation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. Just seven of the eight methods are employed by Angie Kilbane. Meanwhile, the faithful method is not employed because it is better suited for translating official writings and has a tendency to be more rigorous when translating novels. The research results show that the most dominant translation method used by Angie Kilbane is the literal translation method emphasizing to SL. SL is the first novel that must maintain elements of Indonesian culture so that readers in TL feel the aesthetic value of culture in SL. Literal translation also has a translation method that is not too far from TL because this method only adapts the grammar in the TL.

Abstract

This research studied student motivation in light of Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System theory. There are three motivational dimensions: Ideal-L2 Self, Ought-to L2 Self, and Language Learning Experience in this theory. According to the idea, this research studied whether individual variables (gender and school accreditations) influence students’ motivation in private senior high schools. This study used a quantitative survey research methodology. This survey included second-grade pupils from seventeen private high schools in Samarinda. 193 students were chosen as the sample using random cluster selection and random individual sampling. This research used the English Learner Questionnaire (ELQ) developed by Dörnyei and Taguchi. This study used SPSS 25 of descriptive and inferential statistics to analyze the data. The data revealed that private high school students in Samarinda were highly motivated (M = 4.27) to study the English language. In addition, a statistical analysis revealed female pupils demonstrated greater motivation than male classmates. In addition, the findings for the relationship between school accreditations and student motivation revealed that school accreditations do not predict learners’ motivation. Based on the L2 Motivational Self System, pupils at private senior high schools in Samarinda were highly motivated. Their motivation was often defined by gender, but not by educational attainment.
