Abstract

This article explores the dynamics of non-democratic political leadership and its implications for development management in Mawu Village, Ambalawi Sub-district, Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia. In many developing countries, including Indonesia, authoritarian leadership is still a common practice in village governance, although its impact on village development has yet to be studied in depth. This study seeks to fill this knowledge gap by analyzing how centralized leadership impacts resource allocation, transparency, and corruption at the local level. Applying a case study approach, the authors collected the data through in-depth interviews and observations. The results show that the concentration of power in a handful of village elites results in unfair and non-transparent resource management, exacerbating socio-economic inequality in the community. Systematic corrupt practices further hamper sustainable development, erode public trust in village governance, and strengthen oppressive power structures. The findings are expected to serve as a foundation for more inclusive and accountable policy formulation in the context of village development, particularly in areas with non-democratic governance.

Abstract

This study explores the role of Muhammadiyah's Islamic philosophy in shaping the experiences of international students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). This topic needs to be studied because shaping the experiences of international students at Muhammadiyah’s universities supports the internationalization of Muhammadiyah’s higher institutions, especially UMM. As one of Indonesia's largest Islamic organizations, Muhammadiyah integrates the principles of Da’wah (Islamic propagation) and Tajdid (reform) into its educational framework, promoting inclusivity and cultural exchange. The study used a qualitative research method, the UMM students from 6 countries and UMM staff were interviewed. Data were collected through interviews, Observation, documents, and literature study. Thematic analysis was used for data analysis. The study examines how these principles influence international students' academic, social, and cultural lives. Findings reveal that Muhammadiyah's emphasis on interfaith dialogue and reform fosters a welcoming and harmonious environment, enabling students to navigate cultural and religious diversity effectively. However, challenges such as cultural adaptation and differing expectations highlight the need for enhanced support systems. This research underscores the significance of Islamic philosophy in global education and offers insights for institutions aiming to balance tradition with inclusivity in multicultural settings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the reception of students from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) towards the meaning of "independence" and "freedom" in the Grab advertisement "Merdeka Melaju dari A sampai Z." Using a qualitative descriptive method with the encoding-decoding reception analysis approach by Stuart Hall, this research categorizes the audience into three positions: dominant hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. Data was collected through interviews with five informants representing various study programs at UMS. The results show that the interpretation of the advertisement varies, influenced by individual backgrounds, experiences, and perceptions. Specifically, this study contributes to communication literature by enriching the understanding of how the values contained in the advertisement are perceived by Gen-Z audiences, as well as how personal experiences and social contexts influence the interpretation of the advertisement's message. The implications of this research are significant for communication and advertising practices, especially in designing campaigns that can more effectively respond to the diverse perceptions of young audiences who hold varied values and views on independence and freedom.

Abstract

Cases of violence against children and women are one of the complex and certainly urgent social issues, especially for regions or regions with strong patriarchal social structures. Violence against women and children is not only influenced by patriarchal structures, but is also reinforced by cycles of normalization that perpetuate the practice as part of cultural "normality." This research aims to deconstruct how patriarchal norms work in shaping people's perceptions of violence, analyze the mechanisms of the cycle of violence (reproduction, justification, and impunity), and identify gaps in culture-based interventions to break the chain of violence. A qualitative approach with a content analysis approach through violence case data from the Nagekeo Village Community Empowerment Office (PMD) and content analysis of local media news and previous studies. The things that can be used as novelties in this paper are to provide new knowledge about how patriarchal norms are transforming or persisting in the current era, as well as their implications for violence against women in the local context, especially the Nagekeo-NTT Society. The process and way to find out how patriarchal culture works is to study case data collected by the Village Community Empowerment Office, especially in the field of women and child empowerment. The analysis of the data proves that the number of violence per quarter of the last year tends to be stable and there is a significant increase. These conditions want to strengthen the basic thesis that there is a kind of habit that is considered normal if violence is committed against children and women. Even in terms of awareness, there are people who have dared to report these cases to the relevant agencies or NGOs that handle them.

Audio-visual media as an effective communication tool is increasing in today's digital era. CDA IPB is one of the work units that carries out programs on the importance of preparing students to succeed in the world of work. The purpose of this final project is to explain the creation flow of CDA IPB profile videos and implement continuity editing in the flow of making CDA IPB profile videos. In addition, in making the video, the editor applies an editing technique, namely continuity editing and Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC), so that the visuals in the video contain continuity and are related to each other. The result of this final project is that an institution needs a short profile video-based information container that can be accessed by parties related to CDA. This profile video has been compiled based on editing techniques, namely continuity editing so that the resulting video can be watched comfortably and the information is conveyed clearly. The result of this final project is a video profile of Career Development and Assessment (CDA) which has gone through the stages of planning, discussion, execution, and completion. When completing the profile video, an editor uses the Multimedia Development Life Cycle (MDLC) method approach, namely assembly (assembly) and testing (testing). Following the stages of the MDLC method, namely testing carried out on profile videos, an interpretation was obtained which showed very satisfactory results with a percentage of 90.08 percent. The main essence of this final project is making the latest profile video from CDA, by implementing the latest things in the profile video. After the profile video has been created, testing is carried out to measure how perfect the latest profile video is compared to the previous one.
