Abstract

This subject's goal was to create an English e-book by using ASSURE model at Borneo English Course Palangka Raya for elementary level; modules for understanding research methods were made by implementing the ASSURE model, which included the procedures listed: (1) Analyze the Learner; (2) State Standards and Objectives; (3) Choose Methods; Media or Materials; (4) Utilize Media and Materials; (5) Require Learner Participation; and (6) Evaluate and Revise. This book was developed by the 9 experts. They used book creator as the website in making the e-book. The e-book was supported by the use of Google Form, Google Docs, and hot potatoes app for developing and creating the book. This book was provided for Borneo English Course students who took the elementary level program. Borneo English Course was a course which provided English language teaching. This research was able to improve the students’ English by using English e-book.

Abstract

This study investigates the teaching process using the EGRA (Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application) method for writing a recount text in the eighth grade at SMPN7 Palangka Raya. It specifically focuses on how the method is utilized in lessons, its presence in teaching plans, and the responses it receives from teachers and students. The EGRA method is selected due to its focus on experiential learning, thereby providing students with opportunities for creativity in their writing and facilitating discussions about their work. Each EGRA stage has its specific objectives, aiding students in understanding, formulating, revising, and applying ideas. Data, collected through observations, interviews, and document review, reveal how the EGRA method affects student participation and assists in effective material delivery, creating an engaging classroom environment. The method encourages various insightful activities and challenges students, thereby stimulating their knowledge and creativity. The research concludes the influential role of the EGRA method in activating student learning and transforming the teacher's role into a facilitator, breaking away from monotonous classroom conditions.

Abstract

This systematic review examines the efficacy of WhatsApp in language learning by synthesizing existing literature and identifying key themes, trends, and gaps in research. WhatsApp, a widely used instant messaging application, offers unique opportunities for language learners to engage in authentic language practice and interaction beyond traditional classroom settings. Through a systematic search of electronic databases and manual screening of reference lists, relevant studies published between January 2010 and December 2023 were identified. The findings reveal that WhatsApp is utilized for various language learning purposes, including informal practice, peer interaction, and collaborative learning activities. Positive outcomes associated with WhatsApp use include enhanced speaking proficiency, vocabulary acquisition, and learner engagement. However, challenges such as technical issues and privacy concerns hinder its full potential. Recommendations for future research include longitudinal studies to explore long-term effects, addressing technical barriers, and comparative studies to assess WhatsApp's relative efficacy. Overall, this review contributes to our understanding of WhatsApp's role as a versatile and effective tool in language education, offering insights for educators, researchers, and policymakers.

Abstract

This article focuses on analyzing the language style used by the most subscribed English teacher channel on youtube from a sociolinguistics perspective. To address the study questions, a descriptive method was used in qualitative research. The data consisted of a transcript of an English teaching video from Lucy Bella Simkins, an online English teacher in her channel named English With Lucy entitled “DO NOT say "you're welcome"! Respond to "thank you" PROPERLY!”. The findings reveal a variety of speech styles used by the teacher predominantly employing a casual-consultative style.

Abstract

This research aimed to explore the phonological interference made by Dayakese students in SMPN Satu Atap-1 Kamipang Regency in pronouncing English words, not only to know the types and most dominant type of phonological interference in students’ pronunciation, but also to identify the strategies to avoid phonological interference of Dayakese toward English words pronunciation. This research employed descriptive qualitative research. The participants of this research were all of the students of SMPN Satu Atap-1 Kamipang Regency, therefore this research applied total population sampling. Three instruments such as pronunciation test, observation, and interview were used in this research. The result showed that phonological interference in this research happened in all three categories: sound addition, sound omission, and sound replacement, but mostly it happened in sound replacement category as many as 305 phonological interferences made by the students. This showed that most of the students tend to replace the phoneme they could not pronounce appropriately according to standardized English pronunciation. Even though several phonemes did not exist in Dayakese, the students could pronounce some of them properly because the students were familiar with those sounds, such as consonants /f/, /v/, /z/, /ʒ/, and diphthong /ʊə/. As in the classroom, the words which consisted of those sounds were often used. Besides, the phonemes which caused phonological interference for most of Dayakese students based on this research were consonants /θ/, /ʤ/, /ʃ/, /ʧ/, /ð/, vowels /ə/, /æ/, and diphthongs /ɪə/, /əʊ/, /eə/. several strategies used by students were repeat pronouncing, students’ correction, re-reading the text, read slowly, asking frequently, and paying attention to the teacher. However, the teacher also applied several strategies to overcome this issue: 1) Encouraging the students to practice by keeping them actively involved in class activities such as reading aloud in front of the class; 2) Correcting students’ error pronunciation after they finished reading a text; and 3) Repeat pronouncing to give the example to the students on how to pronounce the words.

Abstract

Mobile learning is an innovative educational technology that enhances teaching and learning by leveraging mobile devices for flexible and interactive experiences. This study evaluated the effectiveness of mobile learning in improving reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at an Islamic junior high school in Garut, West Java, Indonesia. Using a quantitative pre-experimental design, 30 students participated in a mobile learning intervention that included interactive tutorials and quizzes on recount texts. Pre-test and post-test assessments revealed significant improvements, with average scores increasing from 76 to 83. Statistical analysis using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test confirmed the results (Sig. = 0.000). While the normalized gain score (0.292) reflected modest overall improvement, the study underscores the potential of mobile learning as a supplementary tool to enhance educational outcomes. Limitations, including the absence of a control group and convenience sampling, highlight the need for further research. Future studies should explore extended interventions and robust methodologies to maximize mobile learning’s impact.

Abstract

This study explores the linguistic relationship between Dayak Ngaju (DN) and Kadorih (BK), two languages spoken within the Dayak communities of Borneo. Despite their shared Austronesian origin, DN and BK have diverged significantly over time due to geographic, cultural, and social factors. Using a qualitative approach, the research employed interviews, observations, and document analysis to examine their kinship and divergence. Vocabulary comparison using the Swadesh list revealed an 87.5% difference, classifying DN and BK as distinct languages according to Guiter’s (1973) dialectometric scale. Interviews and observations highlighted BK’s role in preserving ancestral traditions and DN’s adaptation to modern social contexts, underscoring their distinct linguistic and cultural functions. The findings emphasize the dynamic interplay between language evolution and cultural identity, providing insights into the linguistic diversity of the Dayak heritage. This research contributes to broader discussions on Austronesian language classification and offers a deeper understanding of the socio-cultural dynamics shaping language development.

Abstract

This study explored the linguistic relationship between the Dayak Maanyan and Dayak Dusun languages in the East Barito region of Central Kalimantan. Focusing on lexical and phonological features, the research employed a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze 200 glosses from both languages, systematically selected based on the Swadesh list. The glosses were categorized into parts of speech, including nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, and conjunctions. These glosses were compared to identify similarities and differences. The findings indicated substantial overlap in linguistic structures, reflecting a shared Austronesian heritage, while also revealing distinct variations shaped by cultural and geographical influences. These differences highlighted the dynamic evolution of languages within the same region, driven by social interactions and environmental adaptations. This research provided valuable insights into the linguistic diversity and convergence within the East Barito language family, contributing to the broader understanding of indigenous languages in Central Kalimantan.

Abstract

This research investigates sixth grade of elementary school students’ perceptions after learning writing descriptive text with Differentiated Instruction (DI). The current research employs survey research with questionnaire as the instrument. There are four key dimensions assessed from the questionnaire: the effectiveness of DI, supports from the teacher, ease of understanding, and students’ learning motivation. The findings reveal that DI significantly improved students' writing by simplifying complex tasks into manageable steps and making the learning process more engaging. Students appreciate the clear guidance and support from their teacher, which increased their confidence and comfort. DI also tailored instruction to individual needs, facilitating better comprehension and enjoyment of writing. The research concludes that DI effectively enhances students’ writing skills and suggests that future research should explore the long-term impacts of DI, integrate diverse assessment tools, and examine the role of teacher training in optimizing DI implementation.

Abstract

This research has been designed as collaborative classroom action research to improve the speaking skill of teaching English for specific purpose by using simulation strategy for Hotel Accommodation students at SMK Negeri 3 Palangka Raya. The previous generations of the school mostly got poor score at the final proficiency competency test due to the lack of specific English teaching for hotel. The research focused on how the teaching English for specific purpose – “Front Office subject” – by using simulation strategy can improve the speaking skill of Hotel Accommodation students at SMK Negeri 3 Palangka Raya – especially on escorting the hotel guest? This research was designed as collaborative classroom action research (CCAR); collaborated with the colleague – teacher – who teaches “Front Office” at the same class. The action research steps implemented for this research was adapted from Ferrance and Seberova and Maleik. The simulation strategy and the specific purpose approach in teaching English have improved the students’ speaking skill. There were so many advantages in implementing this strategy specifically to the vocational school students. The students were highly motivated in learning English. They may use their English speaking skill sustainably for their future. They felt free to practice speaking English contextually, and may learnt in peer collaboratively during the teaching learning time. The impact was shown on their speaking score - focused on fluency, pronunciation, utterance, and supportive body language - which has reached satisfying mean score. They also may enlarge their utterance skillfully due to the realia taken to the real English class. The simulation strategy – combined with role-play and drilling by delivering ESP material, performed with Genre-Based approach was highly recommended to be applied more and more in English speaking class at vocational school.
