Abstract

This study analyzes the use of sarcasm in the "Dark Indonesia" demonstration on February 21, 2025 using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach. Sarcasm is used as a communication tool to convey criticism of government policies through speeches, protest banners, and social media. This study is qualitative descriptive with data obtained from the TikTok platform. The results of the analysis show that sarcasm functions as an effective form of expression of social criticism, reflecting public dissatisfaction with government policies. Using the concept of signifiers and signifieds, this study reveals the meaning behind sarcastic speech and its impact on political discourse in Indonesia. This study contributes to linguistic studies and understanding of the role of language in socio-political dynamics.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the production process of non-news broadcast programs at the Public Broadcasting Institution (LPP) TVRI Yogyakarta. Using qualitative methods, this study emphasizes descriptive analysis based on in-depth observations of the implementation of AI in broadcast production. The results of the study indicate that the application of AI contributes to increased efficiency and creativity, especially in scriptwriting and music creation. AI allows the production team to create more original content and reduce the risk of copyright infringement. Despite providing significant benefits, the implementation of AI is still limited due to resource constraints, data input accuracy, and lack of technical training. Driving factors such as central policies and ease of production also support the adoption of this technology. Overall, AI has positive prospects at TVRI Yogyakarta, but requires further development to be optimal in broadcast production.

Abstract

Since the rise of the second wave of feminist movement, the contribution of women in professional fields has significantly increased. As women occupy these public roles, studies found that they can still adopt the distinct language, which Lakoff (1975) termed as women's language features. This research aimed to compare and analyze the use of these features among four popular professional public roles in the United States, namely, politician, businesswoman, lawyer, and artist. Furthermore, four figures are selected with consideration of one representative per each role. The figures were Kamala Harris, Indra Nooyi, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Selena Gomez, respectively. A qualitative method was employed, using interview transcripts and audio from YouTube videos. The analysis included all ten recognized features, such as lexical hedges, tag questions, intensifiers, empty adjectives, and others. These features were identified through close reading of the transcripts and careful listening to the audio, then categorized based on the original framework. The findings showed that there were variations in the frequency of feature occurrences across the roles. Moreover, the tendencies appeared to functioned the women's language features as a deliberate way to meet job requirements.

Abstract

This study conducted a qualitative systematic literature review (SLR) to critically evaluate recent research on dividend policy, focusing on publications from 2021 to 2025. Using the PRISMA guidelines, the review identified and organized literature into three key categories: theoretical foundations, determinants of dividend decisions, and the outcomes of dividend policy on firm performance. The study highlighted the use of major theories such as Agency Theory, the Cost of Equity Hypothesis, and Signaling Theory, which continue to shape the understanding of dividend behavior. It also examined various internal factors—such as profitability, liquidity, and corporate governance—and external influences, including macroeconomic conditions and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance, as significant determinants of dividend decisions. The review found that dividend policies have a notable impact on firm profitability, market valuation, and investor perception, especially in periods of uncertainty. Additionally, the study recognized a growing interest in how ESG considerations influence payout strategies. Future research directions include exploring the integration of ESG metrics into dividend models, examining the role of economic cycles and financial crises (e.g., COVID-19), and assessing the implications of technological advancements and digital finance on dividend strategies and broader corporate governance frameworks.

Abstract

This research examines legal issues arising from business disputes in contractual agreements, specifically focusing on the Availability Payment (AP) Service Level Agreement (SLA) between PT Palapa Ring Barat and the Ministry of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia. Disputes emerged due to differing interpretations of tax clauses, where PT Palapa Ring Barat demanded additional VAT (10%) on AP payments, while Kemenkominfo argued the payments already included VAT. This study employs a normative juridical method, analyzing primary sources such as BANI Decision No. 45016/II/ARB-BANI/2022 and relevant legal frameworks, including Law No. 30 of 1999 on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution. Findings indicate that arbitration plays a critical role as an effective, binding dispute resolution mechanism, as demonstrated by BANI's decision, which affirmed the validity of the agreement and ordered Kemenkominfo to pay additional VAT. The case highlights the importance of clear contractual clauses, particularly regarding taxation, to prevent disputes. In comparison, other dispute resolutions, such as mediation, are evident in cases like the collaboration between RSUD Mataram and CV. Ijen Perkasa on hospital information system management. This research contributes to the field by emphasizing the need for clear, comprehensive contracts and effective dispute resolution mechanisms. The findings provide insights for businesses and policymakers to develop contracts that minimize potential conflicts while promoting adherence to legal frameworks

Abstract

Reading comprehension remains one of the biggest issues with second language (L2) learners, particularly due to a lack of vocabulary knowledge. This study addresses the role of morphological instructional methods to enhance students' vocabulary acquisition, particularly prefixes and suffixes via reading activities. Drawing on a literature review method, the research combines outcomes from a number of studies to identify effective morphological approaches that make it easy for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. It focuses on how morphological awareness—understanding word structure and formation—is capable of improving vocabulary comprehension and subsequently reading comprehension. The study also examines the role of inflectional and derivational morphemes in instructional settings, highlighting their ability to facilitate students to make inferences about word meaning, increase vocabulary, and produce greater levels of literacy. Results reveal that the integration of morphological strategies into instruction in the classroom not only enhances students’ language proficiency but also enhances reading motivation and engagement. The research concludes by recommending that English language educators incorporate explicit morphological instruction to support learners in decoding and constructing words effectively

Abstract

This study investigates the application of positive politeness strategies in formal business correspondence written by native English speakers. The research is motivated by the increasing recognition of politeness as a pragmatic tool in maintaining professionalism and managing interpersonal relationships in written communication. Despite numerous studies on digital communication, there is limited analysis of how politeness strategies are systematically employed in conventional business letters. To address this gap, the study analyzes fifteen letters selected from the Oxford Handbook of Commercial Correspondence. Using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory and Nickerson’s (1999) typology of business letter components, the research focuses on elements such as salutations, contexts, pre-closes, closings, signatures, and enclosures. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, with the referential identity technique applied to classify and interpret 121 instances of politeness strategies. The results show that the most frequent strategy was the use of appropriate forms of address (45 instances), followed by establishing common ground, expressing optimism, and asserting knowledge. These strategies appeared consistently across letter components, reflecting their dual function as both communicative and relational tools. The findings highlight the central role of linguistic politeness in reinforcing professionalism, fostering mutual respect, and encouraging future cooperation. This study concludes that positive politeness is not merely ornamental, but a vital rhetorical device in written business interaction. Future research may explore how these strategies vary across cultural contexts or adapt in digital business communications.
