Abstract

The various challenges faced by parents of deaf children can cause stress in parents. The stress experienced by parents in raising deaf children harms the parent's ability to care for children so it can have an impact on the psychological well-being of parents, especially mothers of deaf children. The aim of this research is to explore and understand the psychological well-being of mothers in caring for their deaf children. The method used in this research is narrative qualitative. The sampling method was carried out using a purposive sampling method. Data collection was carried out using a semi-structured interview method. The participants in this research were four mothers of deaf children whose ages were between six years old until twelve years old and who attended special schools. The results of this study show that the challenges in caring for a deaf child can have an impact on the mother's psychological well-being. In terms of self-acceptance, mothers accept the condition of their deaf children but tend to be dissatisfied with the care they provide for their children. The mother's attempts to broaden her understanding about deaf children and their care, demonstrate the personal growth component. In terms of positive relations with others, friends in the community are a source of enthusiasm for the mother in raising children. The demand to care for children independently encourages mothers to develop aspects of autonomy and environmental mastery. When it comes to their purpose in life, mothers have the desire to make their children become self-sufficient and able to communicate in the future.

Abstract

Medical professional students have responsibilities, such as facing unpredictable real situations, large numbers of patients, uncooperative patients, and difficulties with the diseases they treat. The number of responsibilities can cause emotional exhaustion, stress, and burnout for medical students. To overcome this, medical students need a “Grit”. Grit is the desire of oneself to achieve long-term goals accompanied by high perseverance and consistency of interest in these goals. This study uses a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. The population of this study were medical professional education students in Indonesia. This study used a non-probability sampling technique with convenience sampling. The sample size used was 120 participants. The results of this study are professional medical education students have a high grit score (91.67%). Based on the dimensions of consistency of interest and perseverance of effort, the majority of medical professional students have high scores on both dimensions. In this study, the most selected internal factor was "Purpose" (27.2%), while the external factor was "Parenting" (36.67%). A recommendation for future research to conduct mixed method research to examine the topic of grit and its factors more elaborately in order to determine its influence on individuals.

Abstract

Excessive feelings of fear characterize students with social anxiety and worry and avoidance of social situations, especially in the school environment. Students quickly feel nervous and anxious when they are in a crowded environment or public place, such as avoiding appearing in front of the class, not daring to refuse or reprimand others, speaking in a low voice, not daring to answer or ask questions, not looking the other person in the eye, and being afraid. Others poorly view them. This case study involves a fifth-grade elementary school (Sekolah Dasar/SD) student who has experienced social anxiety for the past year. The subject feels uncomfortable in crowded places and has negative thoughts about other people's views of him. Assessment is carried out by observation, interviews, psychological tests (WISC, CSCT, graphic), and the Liebowitz social anxiety scale. The intervention provided to reduce social anxiety in subjects used a cognitive-behavioral approach, namely, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, carried out for nine sessions. The intervention results showed that the subjects could identify irrational thoughts and change them to be more rational, decreasing anxiety levels when appearing in front of the class and interacting with other people in the class and school environment according to the predetermined intervention targets.

Abstract

The impact of non-sustainable lifestyle has increasedly being noticed and more attention are nowadays drawn toward the notion of establishing a more responsible consumption behaviour, mindful consumption is a form of that behaviour. The involvement of individuals, especially the younger generation, is much needed to meet the sustainable development goals of a nation, since it is not the responsibility of the government alone. People should have the notion that their independent participations in the areas of economic, societal and environmental activities will benefit the whole nation. Therefore, the aim of this study is to verify that individual awareness of their contribution to sustainable development will predict mindful consumption. A survey was conducted on 153 young adult participants who are university students, aged between 18 to 25 living in Jabodetabek area. The results show that sustainable development awareness in general significantly predicted mindful consumption, as individuals’ awareness of their role in sustainable development increase, so does their mindful consumption. Further analysis find that the economic dimension of sustainable development awareness is the strongest predictors of mindful consumption, followed with the society dimension. However, the environment dimension of sustainable development awareness does not seem to contribute as a significant predictor of mindful consumption. This study gives rise to an implication that sustainable development awareness should be included in the education of the public in general, specifically for young people, in the hope that it will encourage more mindful consumption pattern of the people to support sustainable development of a country.

Abstract

Completing a thesis is a major academic milestone but often leads to fatigue, stress, and academic burnout. This study examined the roles of academic self-efficacy (an internal factor) and peer support (an external factor) in academic burnout among 7th-semester psychology students completing a 3.5-year thesis at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. The study used a quantitative predictive design with 61 participants from the 2020 cohort. Data were collected using the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Student Survey (MBI-SS), The Academic Self-efficacy Scale, and the Peer Support Scale. Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationships among the variables. Results indicated that academic self-efficacy and peer support together significantly influenced academic burnout. Academic self-efficacy showed a significant negative contribution, while peer support had a negative but nonsignificant effect. Burnout levels among participants ranged from moderate to low, while academic self-efficacy and peer support levels were high. Future research could explore the relationship between 3.5-year thesis completion and positive psychological variables related to academic achievement at the Faculty of Psychology, Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study assessed the effectiveness of the Montessori method on early literacy skills among Group B students at TK Bahtera Bukit Zaitun and compared outcomes with conventional teaching methods. The sample consisted of 28 students aged 5–6, divided into experimental and control groups. The Montessori apparatus included large movable alphabets, sandpaper letters, and reading boxes, with the study conducted from April to June 2024. Pretests and post-tests measured alphabet knowledge, phonemic awareness, and grapheme-phoneme correspondence. Results showed significant improvement in the experimental group, with median scores increasing from 2.5 to 3.8 and mode from 1.4 to 3.8. The Mann-Whitney U test yielded a p-value of .003, and the gain score analysis showed a p-value of 0.001 with a biserial rank coefficient of .7, confirming the Montessori method's effectiveness. It is recommended that kindergarten teachers incorporate phoneme-based approaches in literacy instruction, as these methods proved particularly helpful for students struggling with alphabet memorization.

Abstract

One of the major problems in Indonesia is the high unemployment rate, including among undergraduates. In 2023, the undergraduate unemployment rate was approximately 958,000, or 12% of the total rate. Several factors affect an individual's ability to get a job. One of them is career adaptability, the process of achieving career goals that needs to be developed since undergoing education, especially in final-year students. However, little effort has been made to improve students' career adaptability, such as academic self-efficacy. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between academic self-efficacy and career adaptability in final-year students in Jakarta. A correlational quantitative method was applied to 121 final-year students in Jakarta obtained through convenience sampling techniques. The measuring tool used to measure academic self-efficacy is The Academic Self-Efficacy Scale (TASES) which has gone through a validity test with a corrected-item total correlation score in the range of .384-.602 and Cronbach's alpha reliability score of .885. Meanwhile, the measuring tool for career adaptability is the Career Adapt-Abilities Scale (CAAS) with validity test results in the range of .322-.652 and a reliability score of .905. Based on the results of the correlation test with Spearman's correlation, there was a significant positive relationship between academic self-efficacy and career adaptability in final-year students in Jakarta, with a Spearman's Rho score of .636, p-value < .01. It can be concluded that the higher the academic self-efficacy, the higher the career adaptability of final-year students. Self-confidence in academic ability helps individuals prepare for future careers.

Abstract

In cyber bullying cases, there are three categories of parties involved, such as perpetrators, victims, and bystanders. This study analyzed the overview of victim attribution in reinforcer bystanders involved in cyberbullying incidents among Generation Z. This study uses qualitative methods with a semi-structured interview. The study shows that individuals’ perspectives on tolerating cyberbullying events vary. The four participants who were bystanders in the cyberbullying showed both victim attribution aspects, which are dehumanization and attribution of blame. Participants tend to blame the victim when they think that the victim is at fault. Therefore, in certain cases of cyberbullying, participants tend to normalize or consider it appropriate for cyberbullying to occur.
