Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a crucial component of English language learning; however, conventional vocabulary instruction often promotes passive learning and limited student engagement. Preliminary observations revealed that students demonstrated relatively low vocabulary mastery, indicating the need for more interactive digital learning tools. This study, therefore, aimed to examine the effect of the Wayground application on improving tenth-grade students’ vocabulary mastery and to compare the learning outcomes of students taught using Wayground with those instructed through conventional methods through a quantitative experimental approach employing a non-equivalent control group design involving two tenth-grade classes consisting of 60 students, using a 20-item multiple-choice vocabulary test administered through pre-test and post-test procedures. The findings revealed that although both groups experienced improvement, the experimental group demonstrated substantially greater progress, with the mean score increasing from 47 to 76 compared to the control group, which improved only from 48 to 51, while the Independent Samples t-test produced a value of 9.35 that exceeded the t-table value of 2.00 at the 0.05 significance level. These results indicate that the Wayground application significantly enhances students’ English vocabulary mastery and represents an effective digital learning tool for supporting vocabulary development in English language instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Pancasila values through Civics Education (PKn) learning at the junior high school (SMP) level using a literature review approach. The research employs a qualitative method with data collected from various scientific sources, including journals, books, and previous research findings. Data analysis was conducted by identifying, categorizing, and synthesizing findings related to the implementation of Pancasila values in PKn learning. The results indicate that the implementation of Pancasila values in PKn learning still faces several challenges, including the dominance of cognitive-oriented approaches, limited innovation in teaching methods, and insufficient integration of values into contextual learning practices. However, several studies also reveal that active, contextual, and experiential learning models, such as project-based learning and group discussions, can enhance students’ internalization of Pancasila values. Furthermore, school environment, teacher role modeling, and positive school culture significantly contribute to the success of value implementation. This study concludes that the implementation of Pancasila values through PKn learning should be carried out holistically by integrating cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects, supported by innovative teaching strategies and a conducive educational environment.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze grammatical errors found in Instagram captions written by English Education students of HKBP Nommensen University Medan. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of grammatical errors, determine the most dominant error, and analyze the factors that cause these errors. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data consisted of 50 Instagram captions collected from students’ Instagram accounts through documentation techniques. The data were analyzed using the Surface Strategy Taxonomy proposed by Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982), which classifies grammatical errors into four types: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The results of the research show that all four types of grammatical errors were found in the students’ Instagram captions. Among the errors, omission was the most dominant type, occurring 21 times or 42% of the total errors. Misformation occurred 17 times, addition occurred 8 times, and misordering occurred 4 times. These findings indicate that students still face difficulties in applying correct grammatical structures when writing captions in English. Furthermore, the study revealed that grammatical errors were mainly caused by three factors: interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, and overgeneralization. Therefore, it can be concluded that students need to improve their understanding of English grammar to reduce grammatical errors not only in academic writing but also in everyday communication on social media.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the the perceptions of youth community found on the use of slang language on the maintenance of mother tongue and the types of slang used by the youth community in Pematangsiantar. This research uses qualitative descriptive research. Data were taken from the transcript of an interview and youth conversation recordings. The analysis focused on the perceptions of youth community based on Joanes et al. (2014) theory : auditory perception, visual perception, kinesthetic-tactile perception, social perception, extra-sensory perception. The results showed that out of 50 expressions of perception, two out of five types of perception were identified. 48 expressions were categorized as social perception, while the remaining 2 were categorized as auditory perception. In addition, the emergence of filler expressions such as eee, umm, and hmm while the interview process indicates additional oral strategies to maintain the flow of conversation, provide time to organize thoughts, mark hesitation, and also serve as a form of habit. Next, this study identified out of 20 expression of slang language, 17 of them were categorized into seven types of slang language based on theory of Allan & Burridge (2006, as cited in Mulyantini et al., 2023) and Hidayat et al. (2020, as cited in Hasanah 2022) including imitative, clipping, blending, borrowing, multiple process, fresh and creative, and flippant, while the remaining 3 were catergorized into uncategorized slang language. In conclusion, this study confirm that slang is not merely a linguistic variation, but also serves as a social tool supporting interaction, self-expression, and the management of informal conversations

Abstract

The use of slang in movies represents informal, expressive, and culturally bound language that often creates challenges in translation, particularly in subtitles. Slang expressions are commonly used to reflect natural conversation, characterize speakers, and convey emotional nuance. However, many slang expressions do not have direct equivalents in the target language, which can result in shifts in meaning, tone, and cultural context. This issue becomes more complex when translating British slang into Indonesian, as both languages differ significantly in terms of cultural references, social usage, and linguistic structure. Therefore, it is important to examine how slang expressions are translated and what strategies are applied to maintain their meaning and function in subtitles. This study aims to identify the types of slang expressions found in the movie My Oxford Year and to analyze the translation strategies used in translating those expressions into Indonesian subtitles. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from the English and Indonesian subtitle files of the movie, focusing on 35 selected slang expressions that appear throughout the dialogue. The data were analyzed using classification of slang by Tony Thorne and translation strategies by Mona Baker. The findings reveal that various types of slang are used in the movie, including colloquial slang, taboo slang, youth slang, occupational slang, and creative or innovative slang, with colloquial slang as the most dominant type. In terms of translation strategies, paraphrase using related words, cultural substitution, and translation by a more neutral word are the most frequently applied strategies. Overall, the study indicates that the translator tends to prioritize clarity, readability, and naturalness in the target language, although some stylistic and cultural nuances of the original slang expressions are inevitably reduced.

Abstract

In the context of primary education, the implementation of inclusive education represents an important effort to create a fair and equitable education system for all students, particularly in supporting their social-emotional development. Inclusive education emerges as a response to the limitations of the segregated system, which tends to separate students with special needs from their social environment. This study aims to analyze the impact of inclusive education on the social-emotional development of elementary school students using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Data were obtained from reputable databases such as Scopus and SINTA within the 2021–2026 period, through stages of identification, screening, eligibility, and inclusion, resulting in 23 relevant articles for analysis. The analysis was conducted using a bibliometric approach with the assistance of VOSviewer, as well as thematic analysis to identify patterns and research gaps. The results indicate that inclusive education has positive impacts, including increased social interaction, empathy, tolerance, and acceptance of diversity, and also contributes to students’ cognitive development through collaborative learning. However, in certain conditions, inclusive education may present challenges such as anxiety, low self-concept, and difficulties in social adaptation. Its successful implementation is strongly influenced by teacher competence, school readiness, and the support of an inclusive learning environment. Therefore, inclusive education plays a strategic role in shaping students’ social-emotional development, but it requires strengthening in its implementation to achieve optimal outcomes.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and causal factors of pronunciation errors in the realization of the regular past tense suffix -ed among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 14 Medan. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, this study employed Error Analysis as its primary analytical framework, guided by Corder (1981) and the Surface Strategy Taxonomy of Dulay, Burt, and Krashen (1982). Data were collected from ten purposively selected students of class XI.2 through an oral pronunciation test comprising 60 regular past tense verbs representing the three allophones of -ed (/t/, /d/, and /ɪd/), yielding a total corpus of 600 pronunciation tokens. Semi-structured interviews were subsequently conducted to triangulate the findings and identify the sources of error. The results reveal three types of pronunciation errors: misformation (50.50%), addition (21.17%), and omission (10.00%), with an overall error rate of 81.67%. A cross-categorical analysis demonstrated a clear hierarchy of difficulty: /t/ (100%) > /d/ (87%) > /ɪd/ (58%), reflecting an inverse relationship between allophonic difficulty and orthographic transparency. Two interacting causal factors were identified: interlingual interference from Indonesian, manifested through orthographic reading habits and the absence of word-final voicing distinctions in L1, and intralingual overgeneralization driven by the near-total absence of explicit phonological instruction. These findings underscore the urgent need for targeted phonological instruction that explicitly addresses the voiced-voiceless distinction and the allophonic conditioning rules governing -ed pronunciation.
